CONDITIONALS
1. Match the parts of the sentences, then identify the type of conditionals.
1. If Paul enters the competition, a) it wouldn't have been stolen.
2. She won't go to work, b) if he had been on time.

11. Complete the following conversation with a suitable form of the verbs in
brackets and act it out.

12. The Smiths are looking at two holiday advertisements. Imagine what
they are thinking using conditionals, I'd rather, I'd prefer etc. Discuss this
in pairs, then report back to your teacher.

13. The Smiths chose the package holiday to Hawaii. They are back now
but they didn't have a good time as things didn't turn out the way they ex-
pected. Mrs Smith is writing her friend, Sue, a letter. Look at the ideas be-
low, then write the letter using conditionals, wishes, had better, would
rather.
hotel dirty and crowded, Mrs Smith was sick on the flight, sea polluted,
beach crowded, rooms comfortable but noisy neighbours, food awful, Mr Smith
was sick, no variety of entertainment

14. Students in teams take turns to give their reactions to situations. The
teams should be able to invent at least seven situations using conditionals
and wishes as in the example:
Example:
He wishes he could reach the island. – If he reaches the island, he might
find something to eat.
He wishes he hadn't been shipwrecked. – If he hadn't been shipwrecked, he
wouldn't be on a raft now.

4. First underline the implied conditionals, then change them into if-clauses.
1. I missed the early train, otherwise I wouldn't have been late.

myself.
4. Michael would be celebrating but he didn't win the race.
5. They would be at the reception but they weren't invited.
6. The hotel wouldn't be overbooked but the receptionist made a mistake.
7. The film was very popular, otherwise the director wouldn't have won an
Oscar.
