Tea
Чай
Tea is the British national drink. 56 million people drink it all over
Britain every day. Almost half of the coutry drinks tea.
Tea came from the Far East in the 17th century. At that time it was very
expensive. The word "tea" covers many social traditions. "Teatime" is the
afternoon meal of sandwiches, cake and tea to keep away hunger between
lunch and dinner. Working people have tea at about 11 o’clock in the
morning for a snack and call it "tea-break" or "elevenses". The British drink
mostly Indian tea.

It is an English house. It is the house of Mr and Mrs Claydon. Mr and
Mis Claydon are Mike’s parents. They have a house in Oxford. Their house
is not very large, but it is very nice. On the ground floor there is a hall, a

Upstairs, on the first floor there are two bedrooms, a study, a bathroom
and a toilet/lavatoiy.
There’s an attic with a window and a balcony. In front of the house
there’s a small garden. There are a lot o f flowers there: red tulips and white,

At the back of the house there is a garden with a nice lawn, apple trees,

Post Offices
There are post offices in every town and nearly every village in Britain.
They are open from 9.30 to 17.30 Monday to Friday, and from 9.00 to 12.00
on Saturday. Some post offices in small towns and villages in Britain close
for an hour at lunch time.
If you want to send a letter, a postcard or a small parcel you needn’t
go to the post office. You can drop it into the post box. They are usually red
and you can often find them at a street comer.
Post within Britain you can send first or second class.

T elep hon es
You can find public telephones in the streets, in some post offices,
large department stores or hotels. There are two main kinds. Coin-operated
telephones accept coins only. Phonecard-operated telephones accept only
phonecards — green telephone cards. You can buy them at the post office and
shops.
House Number
Most streets in Britain have odd numbers (1, 3, 5...) on one side of the
street and even numbers (2, 4, 6...) on the other side.
Buses
There are cheap tickets and passes for a day’s or week’s travel in
London which combine bus, underground and train travel. The fare depends
on the length of your journey.

Shopping in Britain

British shops open at 9.00 a.m. and they close at 5.30 or 6.00 p.m. Big
British shops don’t close for lunch. Small shops usually close for an hour at
lunchtime. M ost shops are closed (don’t work) on Saturday.
On one or two days a week — usually Thursday and/or Friday —
some large shops are open until about 8.00 p.m. for late night shopping.
Most British families don’t buy their milk or newspapers from a shop; a
milkman and a paperboy or a papergirl bring (deliver) them to their houses.

Takeaways
In London you will find food from all over world. You’ll find Indian,
Italian, French and Chinese restaurants there.
Many restaurants offer a takeaway service: you order the food and
take it away, cooked and ready to eat. The most popular takeaway
restaurants are Italian (pizza), American-style hamburger bars and fish and
chip shops. More and more, people buy hot food from a "takeaway” and eat
it at home. This is quicker than cooking a meal and cheaper than eating in a
restaurant. The most common takeaway food in Britain are fish and chips
and hamburgers.
Takeaway is a meal which you can buy ready-cooked and then take
away to eat, either in the street or at home. This includes fish and chips,
hamburgers, and Chinese and Indian food.
Fish and chips is a ready-cooked food. You can see how they fry it
in the shop. They put fish in batter made of flour and milk and fiy it until
the batter is crisp.
The British eat fish and chips with salt and vinegar. The most p o p u lar
fish is cod. This food is relatively cheap at about £ 2.50.

Crisps are pieces of potatoes sliced very thin and fried. They sell this
