aspects of your future profession
Discussing responsibilities and tasks performed by a mechanical engineer
Analyzing the layout and information content of a typical CV, writing your own CV
Reading and analyzing job advertisements, writing a cover letter
Preparing for answering questions at a job interview, roleplaying a job interview
UNIT 1
OUTLINING YOUR PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Starting point
1. What is your personal motivation to study for an engineering profession?
2. Do you have any practical experience of vehicle repair or maintenance work?
3. What is your ideal future job like?
4
Basic vehicle maintenance is a fundamental part of the duties of mechanical
engineers. Preventative maintenance is another basic component, but trouble
preventing is not possible unless vehicles are regularly maintained. One disputable
aspect of preventative maintenance is so called “scheduled replacement” of various
parts, which is typically carried out before failures are encountered to avoid far more
expensive damage. As some component parts are replaced before any problem is
actually observed, it should be clearly proved that the expenses are necessary.
As technological advancements take place in today’s rapidly changing world,
the mechanical engineering job has been evolving from purely mechanical issues to
include electronic technologies. Modern vehicles feature complex computer and
electronic systems, so technical experts need to have broader background knowledge
than before. For instance, the term “car mechanic” is not used so frequently; the
position of “automotive service technician” is used instead. Most automobile
dealerships now provide sophisticated diagnostic computers to service and repair
technicians that enable them to diagnose or repair vehicles faster and more precisely.
Task 2. Match the words and word combinations with their Russian equivalents.
Use them to make the sentences of your own.
1) preventive maintenance a) определять издержки
2) maintenance b) начинать
3) scheduled replacement c) ремонт
4) to diagnose d) обслуживание
5) partial disassembly e) частичная разборка
6) replacement f) замена
7) failure g) поломка, отказ
8) to commence h) профилактическое обслуживание
9) to calculate expenses i) сложный, высокотехнологичный
10) repair j) диагностировать
11) expensive damage k) сбор данных
12) rapid advancement l) плановая замена
13) sophisticated m) стремительное развитие
14) gathering data n) значительный ущерб
Task 3. Complete the sentences with prepositions where necessary.
1. A car mechanic specializes ... automobile repair.
2. A mechanic should be knowledgeable in working ... all parts … cars.
5
3. This job involves the replacement ... some parts.
4. Nowadays mechanics need to have more knowledge than ... the past.
5. Most dealerships provide diagnostic computers ... each technician.
Task 4. Match the sentence parts.
1. In repairing cars, a mechanic’s main a) vehicles feature sophisticated
role is… computer and electronic systems.
2. Preventative maintenance is b) in a specific area or a vehicle make.
impossible if… c) fast and precise diagnostics of the
3. Today’s mechanics should have much problem.
more knowledge because… d) about expenses of scheduled
4. Some mechanical engineers are only replacement.
competent… e) vehicles are serviced on an irregular
5. Many vehicle owners argue… basis.
Task 5. Read the text again and answer the questions.
1. What is a car mechanic’s range of knowledge?
2. What are the main functions of the car mechanic?
3. What technologies does the mechanic's job include?
4. Why is the role of “scheduled replacement” often misunderstood?
5. Why are car mechanics often called automotive service technicians nowadays?
Task 6. Work with a partner. Act mini-dialogues providing reasons for your
professional choice and ways of professional development.
Student 1. You are a fresh graduate of an engineering college and your goal is to
find an occupation that will help you develop your professional skills. Consult your
senior colleague how to do it in a better way.
Student 2. You are an experienced repair technician. You have been long practicing
repairing vehicles and you are very suspicious of those young and proud graduates
of technical schools who prefer to get higher salaries just because they have a formal
diploma. Consult your junior colleague on how to become a true professional.
Example:
A: I chose this profession because engineering is very prestigious nowadays. Now I
hope I will be soon promoted to a higher position because a have a diploma of the
best university. What about you?
6
B: Oh, I see. As for me, I chose this profession because I possess some valuable
technical skills. I consider my job a part of my life…
Task 7. Work in mini-groups. Single out positive and negative aspects of your
future profession. Complete this SWOT diagram for a fresh graduate of an
engineering educational institution. Get ready to discuss the results in class.

UNIT 2
SHAPING THE PERONALITY OF A PROFESSIONAL
Starting point
1. Do you see any difference between skills and abilities?
2. Do you agree that personal traits really matter in choosing one’s occupation?
3. Present your strongest and weakest points as a student (or a future specialist).
Task 1. Read the text and fill in the gaps with the missing parts.
a) service technicians often replace worn parts
b) trainees of an automotive repair school
c) mechanical engineer examines the engine
d) repair technicians are using computers constantly
Mechanical Engineer’s Skills
Mechanical engineers deal with vehicle repair and maintenance. The most
frequent challenging aspect of the repair is diagnosing the problem. Speed and
accuracy in diagnosis and calculating expenses are crucial for keeping efficient
production and long-term clients.
The 1) … while it is running to see if his initial assumptions are correct.
Electronic diagnostic equipment is useful but the good mechanical engineer can
learn a lot using his eyes, ears, and a nose. Some parts can be repaired, but if a part
is worn or damaged, it must be replaced. When people come in for a check-up, 2) …

before they become hazardous to the driver, even though drivers can be suspicious
of mechanics who recommend to replace parts that haven’t stopped functioning.
The best mechanical engineer must have mastery of a wide variety of
integrated skills: electrical systems (a car’s wiring is rather complicated);
computerized electronics (a television set seems much simpler); fuel system (a car’s
“plumbing” is a real maze of tubes). Car mechanics proudly compare themselves to
doctors, since they mainly see vehicles with complaints; but the vehicle designs
change every year. As a result, the job requires more preparation than ever before.
More and more, cars are controlled by electronic instruments, so 3) ... . Computers
have become as much a part of the tool box as wrenches.
Most mechanical engineers begin as car 4) …, and then start working at the
same dealerships. They read trade papers daily to know about changes and trends in
their industry. As they gain experience they can move into higher-paying positions
those of supervisor or manager, particularly if they have strong interpersonal skills
to maintain business relationships and calm cranky customers.
Task 2. Match the words and word combinations with their Russian equivalents.
Use them to make the sentences of your own.
1) топливная система a) damage parts
2) изношенные детали b) diagnosis
3) диагностика c) diagnostic equipment
4) постоянные клиенты d) fuel system
5) осматривать e) interpersonal skills
6) оборудование для диагностики f) long-term clients
7) заменить g) cost estimation
8) набираться опыта h) to examine
9) обслуживать i) to gain experience
10) гаечный ключ j) to have mastery in
11) коробка с инструментами k) to maintain
12) умения межличностного взаимодействия l) to replace
13) поврежденные детали m) tool box
14) расчет цены n) worn parts
15) быть настоящим «профи» o) wrench
Task 3. Read the text again and answer the questions.
1. Which of the operations listed in the text can you perform?
8
2. Explain why “a good mechanic can tell a lot by using eyes, ears, and a nose”.
3. What is similar and what is different in the work of car mechanics and doctors?
4. What is the way car mechanics can move into higher-paying positions?
5. Is it important for an engineer to be able to communicate with customers?
6. Are you familiar with any modern trends in your industry? Draw on an example.
7. Can you depict your career trajectory starting with a simple car mechanic?
Task 4. Work with a partner. Using the list of verbs below discuss expected
responsibilities and tasks performed by a typical “effective” mechanical engineer
within his mechanical engineering career.
Example: Improving dealership relations with manufacturers, repairing fuel
systems, replacing worn parts, carrying out general maintenance.
Advise, analyze, assist, carry out, change, classify, consult, control, cooperate,
create, deal, decide, develop, estimate, examine, improve, inspect, install, make,

UNIT 5
GETTING READY FOR A JOB INTERVIEW
Starting point
1. How difficult is it to get а good job in your country at the moment?
2. What are уour plans for getting а job?
3. Are you prepared to work abroad?
4. What is your dream job and how will you get it?
Task 1. Look at tips for a successful interview. Rank them from 1 (the most
important) to 5 (the least important). Compare your ideas with a partner.
1. Dress smartly in clothes that are appropriate for the workplace.
2. Look up the interview location beforehand and be sure to arrive on time.
3. Read up about the company and any important business developments in advance.
4. Ensure you have had a good meal before the interview.
5. Think of some questions you would like to ask the interviewer.
Task 2. Read the text below and mark the statements T (true) or F (false).
1. It isn’t important if your first job is not very exciting.
2. It’s best to contact as many employers as possible.
3. Interviewers are only interested in skills and qualifications, not in how you look.
4. It’s advisable just to answer the interviewer’s questions.
17
An interview is the opportunity for the company to get to know you, and for
you to make a good impression. Always dress smartly when you attend an interview.
Remember to greet the receptionist, your interviewer, and everyone else you meet
politely, pleasantly, and enthusiastically. Watch your body language – shake hands
firmly and make eye contact. Pay attention, be attentive, and look interested.
Learn where you need to go ahead of time in order not to run late. Do a
practice run beforehand. Provide for a few extra minutes and arrive a little early to
the interview.
It’s important to listen to the interviewer, pay attention, and provide
appropriate answers. Almost every interviewer will ask about your strengths and
weaknesses, so be prepared to talk about what you’re good at and what you can
improve. Prepare some questions, too: the employer is interviewing you, but you are
also interviewing the company! Towards the end of the interview, let the recruiter
know that you believe the job is an excellent fit and that you are highly interested.
Follow up a job interview with a post-interview letter reiterating your interest
in the job. Restate why you want the job, what your qualifications are, how you
might make significant contributions, etc. This letter is also a perfect opportunity to
discuss anything of importance that your interviewer neglected to ask or that you
neglected to answer.
Task 4. Match the words to make collocations, then use them to complete the gaps
in the sentences.
1) job a) experience 6) attend f) weaknesses

4. As soon as I was asked to …, I started to prepare for questions about my … .
5. The first interview is to … the candidates; if they …, they get a second interview.
Task 5. You are going to watch a video about dos and don’ts of a successful job
interview. First study some words and expressions from it and match them with
their definitions. Then use them to make the sentences of your own.
1) concise (summary) a) extremely powerful or painful
2) bone-crushing (handshake) b) to concentrate fully on smth
3) pick up the slack c) very brief
4) keep the focus on (the job) d) to do the job others are not able or willing to do
Task 6. Watch the video and answer the questions about it.
1. What key areas are the most interviews designed to assess?
2. What does the expression ‘Dress for success’ mean? How should a man/woman
dress for an interview?
3. What areas should you focus on when telling about yourself?
4. What should you avoid while discussing your weaknesses? What is it better to
focus on instead?
Task 8. Watch again ‘Important Things to Remember’ and complete the gaps.
1. Stand up and … your interviewer. 4. Ask for your interviewer’s … .
2. Don’t wear too much … or … . 5. Turn off your … .

Task 9. Work in two groups. Take turns to name dos and don’ts of a successful
job interview. The team that remembers more facts will win!
Task 10. Watch a video about different interview styles and complete the table with
information about how Jonathan and John perform in the interview.

5. What are your strengths?
6. What are your weaknesses?
7. Tell me about a difficult situation you have faced?
8. Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years from now?
9. Why should we hire you?
Although it is hard to predict the future I sincerely believe that I will become a
very good mechanical engineer. I believe that my abilities will allow me to excel and
seek the opportunities of a project engineer or possibly even higher.
I am working on several freelance projects, while actively job seeking.
I believe my strongest trait is my attention to detail which has helped me
tremendously in this field of work.
I consider myself hardworking /reliable /helpful /outgoing /honest /cooperative.
I have faced a number of difficult situations, but the one that comes to mind now
is (describe the situation). I dealt with it by assessing the situation and choosing the
most effective approach. I had to remain unemotional and focused on a solution.
I have had trouble in the past with planning and prioritization. However, I’m now
taking steps to correct this. I just started using a pocket planner.
I have the right combination of skills and experience for this job. I also feature
strong analytical and problem solving ability as shown by my introduction of a more
efficient work flow system at ABC Company.
21
I really enjoy making contacts and talking with people. The most rewarding part
of being in sales, for me, is helping customers make the right choice about a product.
I’m a people person. I have always been happiest – and most satisfied – when
interacting with customers, making sure I was able to meet their needs.
I’m an adaptable person. I can adjust my approach to meet existing requirements.
I’m looking for a job where I can grow with the company.
I’m really energetic and a great communicator. Working in sales for two years
helped me to build confidence and realize the importance of customer loyalty.
In my last job I sometimes had to find answers to IT questions searching the
Internet. I enjoy learning new things, so research is actually one of my hobbies.
I’ve always been a great team player. I’m good at keeping a team together.
I’ve learned a lot from my current position, but now I’m looking for a new
challenge, to broaden my horizons and gain a new skill-set.
My work is important to me, so instead of rushing to accept the first thing that
comes in my way, I’m taking time to make sure my next role is the right one.
You require someone who can perform a wide range of administrative duties. I
have a track record of carrying out these different tasks efficiently and successfully.
I was laid off redundant, because the company relocated/ downsized to cut costs.
I need to learn to be more flexible when things are not going according to plan.
My goal is to become a leading specialist in five years. Although not everyone
gets promoted to this level, I believe I can achieve this goal through hard work.

1. Where can the customer check which goods are in stock?
2. What delivery time is promised by the supplier?
3. What payment method is used by the supplier?

Task 6. Find the English equivalents to the words and word combinations.

statement of many reference books, in real practice abbreviations such as Str.
(Street), Rd. (Road), Av. (Avenue), and Pl. (Place) are widely used.
In a personal business letter, the sender’s data are located in the upper right corner.
Word Telephone (Tel., Fax) usually precedes the number itself.
2) …
As a rule, the reference is given directly under the heading on the left or on the right:
Our Ref:/Reference: /In reply please refer to:
Then goes the reference itself, i.e. numbers, or other symbols indicating the
department, case number, etc.
3) …
The date is located in the upper right corner at the level of the first line of the
internal address. The position of the dates and months are not identical in the UK
and the USA. So “12.02.18” in the UK means February 12, 2018, while in the USA
– December 2, 2018.
The following short forms of the months are used: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Jun, Aug,
Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec. There are no short forms for May and July.
The following variants for writing dates are in use: 1st March, 2018 or 1st Маr,
2018; Dec 14, 2017 or December 14, 2017.
4) …
The internal address or address of the recipient company is located in the upper left
corner. The name of the company, if you address the letter directly to the company
or an official, should be stated as: Black & Co. Ltd/ Sales Manager/ 33 Highroad/
London/ N 6 England
If at the same time you know the name, it is better to indicate the name and position:
Mr. J. Rocks, Manager.
The company address is presented in a certain pattern: the house number and the
street name in the first line, the name of the city and its zip code (in the US + state
name) in the second line, and finally the name of the country (full or abbreviation).
27
If you want your letter to be sent to a certain employee of a company, then you can
send it to the address of the company, specifying in the line below the internal
address Attention of (Mr. X), Attn. of (Mr. X), or For the attention of (Mr. X).
Another variant of writing an internal address is used in case you want to send a
letter to a person whose address is unknown to you, but you know the address of a
company he is cooperating with.
Example: Mr. E. Black /c/o Western Wheat Co. Plc., /64, Darwin Road, /Liverpool,
16, /England
Mention different signs used for “number”: # in the USA and No in the UK.
Remember several rules when specifying the recipient’s name: when addressing a
man, use Mr. White, Mr. J. White, Mr. James White; when addressing an unmarried
woman or a young girl, use Miss Black; when addressing a married woman, use
Mrs. Brown; when addressing a woman, whose marital status is unknown, use Ms.
Gray (This form is becoming more and more common nowadays).
If the letter is addressed to a certain person whose name is indicated in the internal
address, then the position, rank or academic degree may be stated after the comma.
Example: Ms. White, Sales Manager; Mr. T. Smith, Professor; Mr. N. Brown, Ph.D.
or: Prof. John Harrison; Dr. Samuel Glad
5) …
If a letter is addressed to the company as a whole, use Dear Sirs – Yours faithfully.
For an American company it is more customary to use Gentlemen – Yours truly.
If a letter is addressed to the employee of the company, whose name is unknown to
you, use Dear Sir /Madam – Yours faithfully. If a letter is addressed to the employee
of the company, whose name you know, use Dear Mr. White /Dear Mrs. White
/Dear Ms. White – Yours sincerely. As stated above, you should address more
formally a person you don’t know.
If the recipient is not just your business partner, but also a close friend, you may use
Dear Ronald – Best wishes /Sincerely, Dear Elizabeth – Cordially /Regards
28
There is a growing tendency now not to specify in business letters whether you
address to a man or a woman: Dear Personnel Officer /Sales Manager /Colleague –
Yours faithfully
6) …
As a rule, there are three parts in any letter: the introductory paragraph, the main
body and the conclusion.
The introductory paragraph consists of one or two sentences where the author
indicates the reason for writing a letter, makes a reference to the previous
correspondence or negotiations on the subject of the letter, expresses a certain
attitude to the subject of correspondence (gratitude, regret, interest, pleasure). In the
conclusion, the authors summarize the information, state their intention concerning
the letter subject and specify further steps expected from the letter recipient.
Task 10. Scan the list of useful phrases and offer a suitable heading for each group.
To confirm the previous negotiations, arrangements, or correspondence, To inform
of good news, Purpose statement, To conclude the letter, To provide some additional
information, To clarify additional questions, To express gratitude, To inform of
unpleasant news and express regret, To express request, Introduction and reference
to previous actions (agreements, correspondence)

Starting point. Read the introductory topic about letters of complaint and answer
the questions: What are some of the reasons for complaints in the business sphere?
What should be stated clearly in a letter of complaint? Why is it sometimes
necessary to express your complaint in a rigid and demanding way? What should be
pointed out in this case?
There may be various reasons for complaints in the business sphere: failure by one
of the business partners to fulfill obligations about transactions, violation of the
terms of the contract, delivery of a substandard product, unsatisfactory work
performance, unfair service, etc. A properly drafted letter of complaint can help
resolve the misunderstanding or the conflict. Don’t fail to state clearly the essence of
your claim (what exactly are you complaining about) and to formulate what actions
you expect from the culprit of your complaint.
It is significant that the letter is written in a calm and polite tone and expresses a
request to take the necessary measures in the near future. However, the complaint
may also be of a more rigid and demanding nature, especially if there is no response.
In this case the author points out directly the seller’s obligations, provides quotes
from a guarantee agreement and requires urgent actions to be taken. Also the author
warns that appropriate measures will be taken if the claim is not satisfied.
Task 1. Scan the letters of complaints below and decide, which one is written in a
polite way and which in a more rigid manner. Prove your reasons.
Task 2. Read the letters more carefully and find the English equivalents for the
words and word combinations given.

headlights from consignment A348 came from a new supplier. Work with a
partner to do two role-plays.

Phone call 1: You are Alex. Phone the bulb supplier (a Spanish company called
AutoLux) to complain about the problem with the bulbs. Ask what they are going to
do to prevent the problem happening again.
Phone call 2: You are Alex. Phone Chris to explain what the problem with the
headlights was, and say what you are going to do to solve the problem.
Student 2
Phone call 1: You work for AutoLux. Deal with Alex’s complaint as politely and
professionally as you can.
Phone call 2: You are Chris. Make a note of what Alex tells you. Make sure he

when will he solve it.

Task 12. Analyze the offered cases and offer your solutions in a dialogue form
(two roles are prescribed on the cards).
Case 1
Case 2
В последнем номере журнала «Job for You» вы увидели объявление о вакансии
на должность коммерческого агента в международной компании «Bridge to the
Future Farming»,
Bridge to the Future
Farming» и попросите соединить вас с менеджером по кадрам. Его нет на
месте. Спросите у секретаря, когда можно перезвонить ему.
Case 3

while operating, it produces dull knocks in the lower part of the engine, which become louder
as the engine speed is increased.
We are, therefore, returning the above mentioned tractor to you requiring to replace it with a
new model in order to handle the problem.
We look forward to seeing your new line of grain combine harvesters and sugar harvesters as

Dear Ms. Moehlmann,
Subject: Replacement of the faulty tractor
1. I regret to inform you that while operating, it produces a sharp, metallic knock, which is growing
in intensity with increasing engine speed.
2. In the meanwhile, your prompt attention to the matter at hand is highly appreciated.
3. This is to notify you of our claim for malfunctioning John Deere tractor 7830 series, 205 horse
power, we purchased from your company two weeks ago.
4. We are inclined to believe they were mistakenly installed on the tractor instead of new ones
while assembling.
5. We are, therefore, returning the above mentioned tractor to you asking to exchange it for a new
model in order to settle the matter.
6. We have examined the tractor and found out that the problem results from worn piston pins and
their bushings.
7. We look forward to seeing your new line of seed drills as soon as they are available.
