The first Octavia was manufactured in the Mlada Boleslav car factory in 1959 as the eighth model in the model
series – which its name Octavia was derived from. As compared with its predecessor, ŠKODA 440 (familiarly
referred to as Spartak), the first Octavia had a modified front body grill and modernized front axle. Leaf springs
were substituted with coiled springs with telescopic absorbers. It was a reliable and easily controllable car. Thus,
Octavia celebrated success on the domestic market as well as abroad and it was assembled overseas as well.

1. Introduction

1.1 Introduction of the Vehicle

ŠKODA Octavia III is the third generation of the hitherto most popular model produced in ŠKODA AUTO. Comple-
tely new vehicle comes with this model. It is a newly introduced structural concept of MQB (see page 6 to 8 of this
Book) that has a great influence on the general Octavia metamorphosis.

The line of oncoming design was already introduced with ŠKODA Rapid car but onlooker still holds his/her breath
when looking at the new Octavia visage. The design is accentuated but it also promises ageless sight.

The robustness of limousine, ample equipment, vehicle safety, large inner space and boot, all of this provides
Octavia III with a momentum to rival the cars of not only the comparable but even the higher classes of competi-
tor makes.

Octavia III is driven by a wide choice of modernized gasoline and Diesel engines. Aside from the manual gearbo-
xes, the outfits also contain the automatic gearboxes, even the 4x4 drive with attached rear axle drive via Haldex
clutch will not be missing. It is also the RS, Scout and, last but not least, Combi version that is being prepared for
customers.

2. MQB Architecture

2.1 MQB Architecture and New ŠKODA Octavia III

Generation 3 ŠKODA Octavia is the first car in the history of ŠKODA AUTO that is designed in the new MQB system.
The very first car with this architecture was A3 car from Audi to be followed by Golf 7 from Volkswagen. With Octa-
via III the Mlada Boleslav car factory takes its part in the manufacture of the cars with a modern MQB concept.

2.2 Modular System Across All Vehicle Classes

MQB architecture (the abbreviation of German "Modularer QuerBaukasten") represents the Group's modular kit
system that was designed for the cars with a transverse engine mounting.
MQB architecture is a modern strategy that leads to more efficient routing of the development toward identical
modules that can be implemented into most of the cars manufactured in the Volkswagen Group. The new system
leads to the reduced number of manufactured components and thereby to the reduction of the costs for develop-
ment and production.

2.3 MQB in Development and Design of New Vehicles

In designing the ŠKODA Rapid, ŠKODA Roomster, ŠKODA Yeti cars, the modular system was applied already, howe-
ver, designers were still bound by the chassis platform. With MQB architecture, even the chassis becomes fully
modular. The same elements will thus form the chassis of most of the cars. As a result, the chassis platform sys-
tem will cease to exist.

Paradoxically, the extended unification will bring higher freedom for the designers in designing new cars. The MQB
chassis architecture is bound by the only fixed dimension in the area: the front axle - steering. The width in this
part of the car is already variable as all the other chassis dimensions.

2.4 MQB in Production

The use of uniform structural units in all the Volkswagen Group makes is followed by the application of standar-
dized assembly procedures and identical assembly equipment. With complete introduction of MQB, a uniform,
all-Group body of the assembly fixtures, jigs and tools will be formed in the area of production. In future, it will
therefore be possible to adapt the assembly line in flexible manner to the production of different car with MQB

2.5 MQB and Vehicle Weight Reduction

While designing the structural units of MQB emphasis is put on the reduction of weight. This applies not only to
the weight reduction of engines and gearboxes, car body in the area of floor, axles but also to the metal elements
of seats, supporting part for the dashboard, weight savings were also found in the reworked lines of the wiring
harnesses.

Emphasis on the reduction of weight in new cars is put namely in terms of economy and ecology where simple for-
mula applies: lighter car = lower fuel consumption = lower emissions.

2.6 MQB and Module Groups

We can divide MQB architecture into several groups. Unification in each of these basic module families will result
in significant reduction in structural units throughout the Group.

rive-axle assemblies: Uniform drive-axle assemblies throughout all the Group cars. The gasoline and Die-
sel engines have retained the same performance parameters of the current drive units but the new MOB (ga-
soline) engines and MDB (Diesel) engines are structurally redesigned. All the power units are inclined back by
12° and the exhaust standpipes in all of them are led out back as well. MQB architecture will also pertain to
the alternative drives (LPG, CNG and electric drive).

– Electronics:
Sharing of identical assistance systems, driving dynamics systems, MIB – (Modularer Infotain-
ment Baukasten) modular system of radios, navigation systems, and other multimedia devices.

3. Body Design and External Vehicle Elements

3.1 Family Design Lines of ŠKODA AUTO

One of the points of the new design conception is also creation of unific elements for all the new ŠKODA AUTO
cars so that their pertinence to the same car family is apparent unambiguously.

Once the ŠKODA Rapid model was introduced, also the shape of new Octavia III's body adheres to the basic
unific design lines.

The engine compartment cover is shaped with four profiled mouldings while the fresh logo of the car company is
placed between the two middle profiled mouldings on the body's face. The inner profiled mouldings then follow
the design of the centre panel in the car interiors. The outer profiled mouldings of engine cover go to A-pillars to
continue over the roof to the car's tail end.
Further hereditary elements of the new ŠKODA cars, including the new Octavia, is the "clover-leaf" arrangement
of front headlamps and fog lamps as well as the radiator grill with ornamental border.

5.1 Body Frame

The required body strength is attained by using the strength steels in the key locations of both the body hood and
the car floor part. Everything is steered toward the maximum measures in providing protection of the inner space
for passengers.
Application of the strength steels brought weight reduction. The high-strength steel in new Octavia III is used for
the manufacture of A-pillars and B-pillars, front bumper's cross beam, and robust MQB frame of the floor
with centre tunnel.

SP96_31
front bumper with radiator grill

Bumper's structure is conceived in such a manner that the damages caused to the important components in the car's
front end by the impacts at low speeds are as least as possible.

Just the same as in ŠKODA Rapid, the radiator grill is firmly connected with bumper.
It is no longer attached to the cover of engine part as was the case in the previous models.

GB 29
Front bumper's beam
The front bumper's beam includes the program-deformable elements that will absorb a large amount of kinetic
energy induced during the crashes at low speeds (up to 15 km/hr). Thus, they efficiently reduce the risk of damage
to the engine part and the supporting body structure.

In the crashes at high speeds, the bumper's beam jointly participates in convenient initiation of the deformation
of front runners which are programmed so that they, at the same time with further body structure, absorb
the crash energy minimizing by doing so the crew injury hazard.

Cross beam and foam component to protect pedestrians
The pedestrian protection crossrail and the pedestrian protection foam component are designed to minimize
injury of the pedestrian's legs when being hit by a car. The main pursued criteria are the deceleration of pedestrian
leg's movement, the bend angle in a knee joint, and the shear in a knee joint. The entire system is debugged upon
calculations and tests so that the values of the criteria above are as low as possible.

5.4 Active Engine Cover Hinges

Within the pedestrian protection measures the ŠKODA Octavia III car is equipped with active hinges of engine cover.

Function description
The three sensors located on the car's front end will recognize crash, the airbag control unit these sensors are con-
nected to will fire the actuators' pyrotechnics, then these actuators lift up the rear engine cover hinges, this will
cause the cover's rear edge to be extended up by 55 mm to be locked in the target position. As a result, an empty
space is formed between the engine cover and the actual power unit and this empty space allows possible defor-
mation of the cover towards the engine part.

In case of a crash, the pedestrian's body encounters the lifted engine cover and the kinetic energy is attenua-
ted by the deformation of the cover plates. The active engine cover reduces consequences of the possible crash
between car and pedestrian being therefore significant, modern element of the passive safety.

Function of hinges in the basic position

The active engine cover hinge is composed of three arms. If actuators are not activated the additional arm R3 and
the upper arm R2 are connected with a rivet and the entire hinge acts as a double-arm hinge with one functional
pivot till the moment of activation.

The span of speeds as the condition for system activation

The pyrotechnic hinge actuators will be activated by the airbag control unit only at the car speeds
from 30 to 55 km/hr.

Car's registration plate must be mounted directly to the car's bumper. The registration plate's holder
influences negatively the pedestrian protection system sensors (active bonnet) and thereby the en-
tire system's functionality.

Car transport after the system activation

If the car is not damaged in any other way it is possible to go carefully to the nearest repair shop with the activa-
ted bonnet. Vehicle speed with activated engine cover must not exceed 80 km/hr.

Repair of hinges
If neither hinges nor bonnet are damaged mechanically after the activation these elements need not to be
replaced then. Hinges will be put to the original state by riveting, only actuators must be replaced.

Beware! After the system has been activated for the third time it is always necessary to replace
hinges and the airbag control unit. Re-riveting can be performed only with the specified rivet
with plastic washer.

(above 110 kW), this axle is then fitted to the Octavia III models with the connected (by Haldex clutch) rear axle
drive and the cars with CNG alternative drive.

The structure of multi-element rear axle with auxiliary frame for the new model of ŠKODA Octavia III is - as oppo-
sed to the previous variants of this axle - reworked. The main change is the new attachment of stabilizer that is
not anchored to the longitudinal arms any longer as was the case, for example, in ŠKODA Octavia II 4x4 (see Fig.

Sensors integrated in the MK100 control units

The following sensors are integrated into the ESC Base and ESC High units:
– side acceleration sensor
– longitudinal acceleration sensor
– rotation speed sensor
– brake fluid pressure sensor

Basic control unit M-ABS contains no integrated sensors.

What is sufficient to implement the ASR and MSR functions are the signals from the group of external sensors
(speed sensors, steering wheel turning angle sensor).

Weight reduction, miniaturization, and placement

As compared to the previous units, the MK100 units are lighter and they were cut in size as well.
In ŠKODA Octavia III, the MK100 unit is placed in the right-hand part of the engine compartment.*

7.2 Multi-Collision Braking Function (MCB)

The multi-collision braking function provides quick deceleration and car stabilization after an impact. By doing so
it prevents further possible collisions when the car is not sufficiently braked or steered when after the crash, for
example in the case when the car passenger is in a shock or injured.

Function description
In case a crash takes place when airbag is activated, the multi-collision braking function is turned on.
The car starts to brake with a deceleration of 0.6 g, braking takes place until a speed of 10 km/hr is attained. At
the same time with a significant automatic braking, the car braking distance trajectory is controlled by the unit
of braking and stabilization systems so that the car is not oversteered. (For example, reduction of oversteering
through the throttle pedal's automatic control.)

Capitalisation
The function is activated upon a signal from the airbag control unit. The condition for the multi-collision braking
function to be activated is activation of at least one airbag in the car.

Implementation
The function is implemented by the brake and stabilization system control unit.

Indication
In case the multi-collision braking function is activated, brake lamps are also turned on automatically within this
function to flash permanently. After the car's complete halt, the warning lights go automatically on.
The car driver is informed of the MCB function activation on the composite instrument panel's display and by the

7.3 Prefill Function (EBP)

The Prefill function assures final pressurizing of the hydraulic brake system preparing by doing so the brake

This will reduce the brake action start time as well as the car's braking distance.

M-ABS
The M-ABS MK100 control unit does not contain the Prefill function and the Multi-collision braking function.
These advanced functions are assured by the controlled units with ESC, see the function survey table on page 42

9.0 Engines

9.1 New MOB and MDB Engines

As we already mentioned in Chapter 2.6 on page 8 of this Book, the MQB architecture conception also pertains to
the engine units. The reworked engines of the new modular system are used exclusively in the ŠKODA Octavia III
car now. Unified engines will thus interconnect the cars of the entire Group.

The structures of the new MOB engines (gasoline type) and MDB engines (Diesel type) were reworked fully.
For the modular structure to function properly, their modifications brought two basic characteristics:

1. P
ower units are designed in modular conception that provides for a wide variability of individual engine versi-
ons (with regard to the required power, valid emission regulations of individual regions, etc.).
module elements of the new engines (EA211 series):
–aluminium engine block
– monolithic cylinder head lid with integrated camshafts
– assembly module of turboblower and catalytic converter
– timing gear drive and auxiliary power units drive
– module of intake pipe with integrated coolant of compressed air
– engine mounting brackets and timing gear drive covers
–module of pump for coolant and thermostat compartment
ProCarManuals.com

– air filter module

– cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold

2. T
he engines acquired unified engine block orientation and the engine exhaust pipe was uniformly directed
so that uniform connectivity of the further modular systems of the car is ensured (mounting of gearboxes, at-
tachment of the exhaust system).

SP96_58

All the power units, both the Diesel and gasoline ones (of the new EA211, EA888 and EA288 series)
are uniformly inclined by 12° backwards and the exhaust standpipes for all the power units are also
led out in the back.

The engine reconstruction was accompanied by their significant modernization.

Development changes in the EA211 series engines (1.2 TSI / 63 kW and 77 kW, 1.4 TSI / 103 kW)
– maintenance free cam belt
– optimized combustion course
– relieved crankshaft, con rod, and pistons
– sixteen-valve technique newly in 1.2 TSI engines
– turboblower and catalytic converter in one assembly module
– variable valve timing
– engine head with a cooled exhaust manifold
– aluminium engine block newly for 1.4 TSI engine

Engine cooling
Dual-circuit system and two thermostats are used for engine cooling. The first thermostat is used for the engine
block, the second thermostat for the cylinder head. The coolant volume was reduced simultaneously. This and in-
dividual temperature control of both cooling circuits lead to quicker warming of engine to the operating tempera-
ture. The engine oil cooler is also integrated into the engine block's cooling circuit.

Engine head with an integrated exhaust pipe

Exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head. Exhaust gases are cooled by the cylinder head's water cir-
cuit. Lower temperature of exhaust gases then loads the catalytic converter a less. Integrated exhaust pipe acce-
lerates the engine heating to the operating temperature.

11.3 Function of sailing mode in the automatic gearboxes

For the ŠKODA Octavia III model, the OCW and OD9 automatic gearboxes are newly equipped with idling function,
a so called sailing mode under which the engine torque is disconnected from the gearbox. The function can
be activated in the Infotainment menu by selecting ECO driving profile.

Function description
In case the function is activated, the clutch is disengaged and engine is disconnected from the gearbox when
driver releases the throttle pedal. Thus, the engine torque is not transmitted to the clutch. The engine runs in idle
speed, the car needs not overcome the engine's braking torque. It thereby utilizes its kinetic energy to the maxi-
mum extent when moving forward with inertia. This results in fuel economy. The sailing mode function may bring
reduction in the fuel consumption of up to 0.5 l/100 km (depending on the driving style and engine).
The disengaged status does not put the clutch mechanism under stress. In the OCW and OD9 automatic gearbo-
xes, the mechanism is designed so that it is engaged with force, however, when in the engaged state, no control-
ling force acts on the mechanism.
The sailing mode can be interrupted by pressing the brake pedal shortly or by pressing the "–" button on the multi-
function steering wheel.
