Abstract. One of the major problems associated with the removal of water from underground aquifers is
land subsidence and soil crack after water level dropping. The studied area with clayey plain soils, is located in the
east of Yazd city (Iran). In this area, two types of soil crack were found, such as longitudinal and polygonal. Soil
samples were taken from the soil profile in the crack positions. Chemical, physical and mechanical analyses on the
samples were carried out. To monitor the surface movement of land subsidence and soil crack changes, surveying
was carried out with a detailed high precision in order to measure the movements, 100 pines were hit as index
points. The results demonstrated that all index points were moved in different directions to about 2.3 cm during 11
months. The geochemical processes and mechanical properties of crack soils intensified the amount of movements.
The study area is a high-risk area. To prevent more dynamic of soil cracks, control of water balance for groundwater
to be proposed.
Keywords: dynamic, land surface, land subsidence, cracks, loamy soils, ground water table.
