Rear Area of US Army Forces in Europe
Material, technical, and medical support for American forces in the European Theater of
Operations is carried out by the resources and capabilities of the Rear Area Command of US
Army Forces in Europe.
The rear area of US Army Forces in Europe can be divided into organizational components: the
corps rear, operational rear, and territorial rear of central command. The corps rear includes the
assigned forces and resources of the rear of combat units and formations. This includes division
rear commands and army corps rear commands (5th and 7th Corps), as well as rear units of
special branches (32nd Air Defense Command and engineer command).
The forces and resources of the corps rear are located in the forward area of the combat zone.
The operational rear includes the 60th Artillery-Technical Group, which supplies all types of
ammunition to American forces; the 59th Artillery-Technical Group, which provides NATO
ground forces with special ammunition; a group responsible for maintaining the combat
readiness of weapons and military equipment, which includes warehouses of heavy military
equipment intended for airborne units and formations deployed from the US to Europe; and the
medical and transportation command. The Rear Area Command of US Army Forces in Europe
oversees the management of the entire rear system in the theater of operations.
The organization of the rear area of US Army Forces in Europe is driven by the fact that there is
no traditional division between the combat zone and the communications zone in the
responsibility area of US ground forces in the Central European Theater of Operations. US
forces do not have a separate communications zone, which, according to the US command,
would constitute a specific territory and corresponding rear entities. The forces and resources of
the rear area of US Army Forces in Europe are organized into three echelons within the combat
zone:
The first echelon, consisting of the forces and resources of division rear commands, is located in
division rear areas.
The second echelon, composed of units and formations of corps rear commands, occupies corps
rear areas.
The third echelon includes the forces and resources of the operational rear, located in the rear
area of the combat zone.
