obtained through aerial and map reconnaissance. 5. For convenience of march planning and
control given a numerical or alphabetical designation
The purpose of marches is to move troops from one location to another in order to achieve their
mission. Marches are classified into tactical and administrative movements. Tactical marches
focus on timely delivery of units and supplies to their destinations in formations and conditions
suitable for combat. Administrative marches prioritize the efficient use of available transport
capacity.
Marches are planned based on thorough route reconnaissance, conducted by the intelligence
officer, to gather necessary information about the route. This information is used to determine
the start point (SP), critical points, and rally point (RP). Units are organized into march units,
serials, and march columns. March computations are also performed, considering rates of march,
road distance, and the number of personnel or vehicles involved. The computed pass times and
arrival/clearance times at critical points are used to plan the movement. Once the plan is checked
and approved, a march order is issued.

1. A well-defined point on a route at which the elements of the move come under the control of
the movement commander. It is at this point that the column is formed by the successive passing
of each of the elements composing the column – Start Point "Надежно определенная точка на
маршруте, на которой подраздеоления движения переходят под контроль командира
передвижения. Именно в этой точке колонна формируется путем последовательного
прохождения каждого из составляющих ее подрасзделений.". 2. A well-defined point on a
route at which the elements composing a column return to the authority of their respective
commander – release point "Хорошо определенная точка на маршруте, в которой элементы,
составляющие колонну, возвращаются под юрисдикцию своих соответствующих
командиров.". 3. A unit which moves and halts at the command of a single commander-
normally one of the smaller troop units such as a platoon or company – March unit Маршевая
группа" is the translation of "marching unit" in Russian. It refers to a unit within a military
formation that moves and halts based on the command of a single commander. Typically, a
marching unit is one of the smaller troop units, such as a platoon or company.

The Pentagon, implementing a comprehensive military preparedness program, is preparing its
ground forces for aggressive actions in various parts of the world. Considering the increased
importance of maneuver warfare, it aims to train troops during peacetime for long-distance
deployments, including conducting extensive ground marches. It is believed that in modern
warfare, marching has become a fundamental element of all types of military operations, and in
most cases, the battle starts from there.
The purpose of a march, as stated in the U.S. Army Field Manual, is to timely bring the troops to
the designated area in full combat readiness and in a formation that best corresponds to the
mission's requirements.
Movements of troops in the U.S. Army are divided into two types: tactical movements and
administrative movements.
Tactical movements involve transporting troops with the main focus on maintaining their
readiness for engaging in combat.
Administrative movements involve transporting troops in situations where immediate
engagement with the enemy is unlikely, both during the journey and shortly after arriving at the
destination.
It is believed that enemy aviation can have the strongest impact on troops conducting marches.
Even in conditions of air superiority, it is recommended to conduct marches in dispersed
formations, during the night, or in poor visibility. Troop movements typically begin at dusk and
end before dawn.
The formations of units and formations conducting marches consist of march groups, march
echelons, and march columns.
A march group is the smallest unit within a march echelon, ranging from a detachment to a
company. A march echelon combines several march groups.
