4
2. FUNCTIONAL SECTION EXPLANATION

2.1 Air Inlet Section

It is for introducing outdoor fresh air thru damper and duct into AHU for process.

2.2 Primary and Secondary Filter Section

It’s standard for HJK AHU that non-woven plate type coarse filter of G3 class and chemical fiber bag type medium filter of
F5 class are adopted in this section. (Non-standard is available at request of customer)

1. Coarse and medium filters are installed on special push-draw rails for minimizing space and for convenience of
maintenance and change.

2. This filter section is combination designed and contains multi filters with standard sizes such as 595×595mm,
289×595mm, etc., which is convenient for replacement.

3. Before installing filters, make sure the rails and seals are well fixed, then install the filters orderly.

4. Pressure difference at two sides of filters can be measured and alarmed by using inclined tube type or finger type
manometer.

5. Cleaning or replacement is needed when pressure difference of filters exceeds the end resistance. Clean water is
generally used for cleaning. Cleaned filters can not be used again before they are completely dry.

Remarks
1. End resistance of plate coarse filter(G3) is 150Pa-250Pa

2. End resistance of bag medium filter(F5) is 250Pa-300Pa

2.3 Service Section

For convenient inspection, part replacement, cleaning and repair, every functional section of the AHU has repair space and
service door. Service section can also equalize airflow.

Remark: It is not allowed to open the service door when unit is running.

2.4 Rotary Heat Wheel Section

Rotary heat exchanger is composed of heat wheel, casing, drive system and sealing parts. The heat wheel is round shaped
and the matrix is alveolate. It rotates at 8~10 rpm/min powered by the drive system. When fresh air (supply air) passes
through half of the wheel, stale air (exhaust air) passes through reversely the rest half of the wheel, heat is transferred
between two air streams. Rotary heat exchanger mainly applied in the air supply and exhaust system of building ventilation
or air-conditioning equipment. It converts the energy (cold and heat) contained in the exhaust air into the fresh air. It is one
of the important equipment in the field of building energy saving.

When installing the rotary heat exchanger, the seal between the wind deflector of rotary heat exchanger and the
unit casing should be ensured under the premise of reliable fixation.

5
2. FUNCTIONAL SECTION EXPLANATION

For units with larger air volume, when this section needs to be assembled on site, please refer to the attached figures and
the following steps.

1. Assemble lower section: after the unit chassis (the bottom channel steel components are connected with the bottom
frame beam, the bottom guard plate, etc.) is in place, install the rotary heat exchanger’s lower rail and rotary heat
exchanger, and then assemble the lower frame, put the guide rail of rotary heat exchanger in place and fasten it.

2. Assemble upper section: If the height of the machine room permits, the upper section can be assembled and placed
on the lower section as a whole, otherwise it can only be assembled gradually on the lower section.

3. Assemble windshield: first, paste a 3×18mm single-sided self-adhesive sealing strip on the outer side of the 30mm
flange of the upper and side windshields and the contact surface with the rotary heat exchanger. The sealing strip is
required to be tightly attached to the windshield, and no protrusions or broken seams are allowed.
I. Installing upper windshield: the 30mm flange of the upper windshield sticks to the inner plate of the top guard plate, and the
vertical edge sticks to the rotary heat exchanger, which is connected with the guard plate and rotary heat exchanger with the self-
tapping and self-drilling nails provided. Windshields must be installed on both sides of the rotary heat exchanger.

II. Installing side windshield and middle windshield: the 30mm flange of the side windshield is attached to the inner plate of the top
guard plate, and the other side is attached to the rotary heat exchanger, using the self-tapping and self-drilling nails to connect the
inner plate of the guard plate and the rotary heat exchanger. Normally, both sides of the exchanger are need to install side wind
deflector. If the space between the surface of water coil section and the exchanger section is less than 400mm (operation space),
the side windshield on this side may not be installed. Finally, install the middle windshield.

1. Measures must be taken to protect the rotary heat exchanger from dust & detritus or other damage
if it is not installed immediately and preserved temporarily or long at the construction site.
2. Filters are suggested to be installed before the exchanger to avoid block of wheel matrix.
3. Inspection space and service door are required for convenient clean and repair.

ATTENTION 4. Rotary heat exchanger is allowed to be used under temperature 50°C.

5. Please do not stop running of wheel alone when AHU is running, otherwise, it will get dusty and the
laminar flow channels can easily get blocked. Intermittent rotation is allowed, such as stop for 5-8
seconds with every 10-15minutes running.

6
2. OPERATION INSTRUCTION

2.5 Cross-flow Plate Heat Exchanger section

Cross-flow plate heat exchanger is an exchanger that directly exchange the air to air, using the airflow temperature difference and water
vapor pressure difference inside the partition to recover the energy. There are two type of heat recovery: sensible heat recovery and total
heat recovery. The crossflow of exhaust air and fresh air is beneficial for heat exchange and are separated from each other by sealing
plates, so there is no cross contamination.

When installing cross-flow plate heat exchanger, it should be fixed firmly and reliable, and pay attention to the
sealing between the slide way of heat exchanger and the box body of the unit.

For units with large air volume, the section may be assembled on site by referring to the attached drawing and the following
steps

1. Installation of slideway: Due to the different dimensions of the unit and the material and specifications of the heat
recovery device, the slide material includes PVC, aluminum alloy, and galvanized steel sheet bending and riveting.
Plate heat exchanger is installed and fixed by four slides (or possibly connected by connecting plate components), so
the installation of slide must be guaranteed to be tight and reliable, and the installation surface must be pasted with
3*18mm single-side adhesive sealing strip to avoid the occurrence of cross airflow.

2. Installation of cross-flow heat exchanger and filter: If the slideway is made of PVC or aluminum alloy profiles, the heat
exchanger and filter are directly pushed in along the corresponding chute; if the slideway is galvanized steel sheet bent
and riveting, the heat exchanger must use the matching self-tapping. The drill nail is connected with the slideway, and
the filter is installed in an independent guide rail. If the plate heat exchanger cannot be attached to the guard plate (or
door plate) but is in contact with the exposed beam, a circle of 5mm thick self-adhesive sealing strip must be pasted
on the flange of the end face of the heat exchanger to avoid cross airflow.

REMARK:
For units assembled on site, if the plate heat exchanger cannot be installed in time for some reason, and short-term
or long-term storage is required on site, proper protective measures must be taken to prevent construction dust and
other foreign matter from entering the equipment or removing the heat storage body or surface damage.

2.6 Heat Pipe Exchanger Section

Heat pipe exchanger is a heat recovery equipment which exchanges the heat from the air on the evaporating side and the air on the
condensing side. The heat recovery method is that using the characteristics of fluoride endothermic vaporization and exothermic
condensation, which is a sensible heat recovery type. The air ducts of exhaust air and fresh air are completely separated from each other
by a sealing plate, so there is no cross contamination.

If the low-temperature heat pipe heat recovery device is installed horizontally, the level should be ensured, and the deviation should not
exceed 3μm/mm. If it is installed vertically, please pay attention to the small end (35mm) facing down and the big end (85mm) up, and also
pay attention to the sealing between it and the unit.

2.7 Cooling/Heating Coil Section

1. Coils comprise of aluminum fins and copper pipe which exchange heat between water and air.

2. An aluminum alloy breakwater is required to be set behind the coil to prevent water in the airflow entering other
functional parts followed if wind-speed is over 3m/s,

3. Cold water pressure shall not exceed 1.2 Mpa(max); Steam pressure shall maintain between 0.05~0.5Mpa.

4. A drain pan is equipped under the coils for collecting and draining the condensate and washing water.

7
2. OPERATION INSTRUCTION

Water pressure shall not exceed the said max pressure, otherwise, Holtop is not responsible for any
damage of the coils.
ATTENTION

Important
1. Check carefully the coils , fins and side boards to see if any looseness, rust or destoration.

2. Check(at least once half a year) if any crack on the connection between in&out pipe and collection pipe.

3. To avoid frozen-break, water in the cooling coil must be drained before winter in areas where the temperature goes
below 0°C. And use 0.6~0.8Mpa compressed air to blow away remaining water inside the coil. Water in heating coil
must be completely drained as well during AHU halt in winter.

4. The U-shade water seal pipe should be used between the drain pan and drain pipe, and guaranteed to have enough
water in it, if not, charge enough water. The valve of drain system should be completely shut off during seasons when
condensate does not occurs.

5. If water is used as exchange media, it should flow through the exchanger from pipe top down in order to make air
exhaust. If steam is used as exchange media, it should flow through the exchanger from pipe bottom up in order to
water drainage.

6. For condensate draining, waterseal is required for the drainpipe. Please make connection as per following sketch-map.

2.8 Supply/Exhaust Air fan

Holtop AHU generally adopts double inlet, forward or backward centrifugal( belt-drive) or direct-drive, outer rotor fan. Standard power
supply is 380V/3P/50Hz. The working principle is: under the action of the supply fan, the outdoor fresh air is sucked into the unit, and
the treated air is sent to the destination through the air supply duct to achieve the purpose of air conditioning treatment. Under the action
of the return fan, the indoor air is sucked into the unit, and the dirty air is discharged to the outdoors after passing through the energy
recovery device.

8
2. OPERATION INSTRUCTION

ATTENTION

1. Before start-up, check all parts of the fan to see if any damage or distortion is caused during transportation.
If any, repair the fan before installation.

2. Before star-up. Check all bolts and nuts to see if they are tight enough. If not, tighten the loosing ones
and adjust the distance between the blower and air inlet vent. Motor shaft should be aclinic and centered.
Lubrication cycle: The bearing temperature is below 70°C. It is recommended to inject lithium-based grease
every 30 to 45 days. If it exceeds 70°C and the bearing temperature rises by 15°C, the lubrication interval
will be reduced to half. The maximum temperature of bearings using lithium grease should not exceed
110°C. Grease filling amount: no more than 60% to 70% of the volume of the bearing cavity. Suggested
grease brand: Shell ALVANIA3. Except for fully enclosed bearings. Please check the belt tension, bearing
tightening bolts and other strong parts regularly for looseness.

3. Check that if the belt is in proper tightness degree and bearing is lubricated.

4. Rated power of fans are valued under certain conditions, of course with some tolerance. Change of working
conditions, for example, inlet and outlet open completely, then if fan is running without load, it may burn due
to increase of power consumption. Therefore, check the current to see if it is overload while the fan is on
commissioning. If any, check the cause before putting it into use.

2. OPERATION INSTRUCTION

8. User should check to see if all conjunction boxes(SA fan conjunction box, EA fan conjunction box and wheel conjunction
box) are complete at the construction site.

Holtop would supply electric control box if buyer ordered it. Holtop is not responsible for site electrical installation. Meanwhile,
buyer must use AC contractor to drive the motors and cables for connecting motors and control box must be as per
stipulated cable specification or bigger.

9. For the ideal data setting of intelligent analog gauges (microcomputer): Supply fan and exhaust fan are controlled by different
way, water supply system are controlled by the intelligent analog gauges. Setting data by intelligent analog gauges manual
guidance, all the data(temperature, humidity, pressure, water flow rate, HZ) should be accordance to the real operation
requirement. Adjusting data of the intelligent analog gauges when commissioning. Commissioning must stable lasting for 4
hours before the air handling unit is put into use.

2.11 Electrical commissioning

1. Make sure all cable connections are correct, reliable and tight before test.

2. Check and make sure of the power supply rating of the AHU, meanwhile measure the power supply with instrument.
With 380V/3ph/50Hz power supply, permissible voltage fluctuation is from -15% to +10%, fluctuation between any
two cables is±2%. With 220V/1ph/50Hz, permissible voltage fluctuation is±10%.

3. Special breaker must be used for protecting the AHU.

4. Commissioning can be operated by using the manual switches/buttons at electric control box. If there is any abnormal
noise during commissioning, check the working current of the motors. If the current exceeds the rated while using
reduction-voltage start, the connection is wrong and must stop the motor to avoid motor burnout. Then re-connect
the cables and make sure it’s correct before re-commissioning. If the current of the 3 phases is equal/close and motor
temperature is in normal scope, all electrical installation is correct. Commissioning must last for 1 hour before the AHU
is put into use.

Warning: All electric sources must be cut off before installation and maintenance, otherwise injury or damage
would be caused and at the operator’s self liability.

11
3. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

3.1 Operation
1. Non-load running of AHU is prohibited. Non-load running here is defined as obstruction of OA&RA passages while the
AHU is running, which would result in distortion of AHU housing. Air outlet must be shut down by 3/4 while the AHU is
running without load, or the motor would be burned out.

2. Power supply is 380V/50HZ/3PH. Make sure the rotation direction of the fan is correct, fan rotates smoothly. All
mechanical and electrical devices should be checked by a professional before start the unit.

3. Cooling & heating coil use clean demineralized water as medium, working pressure ≤1.2MPa. Steam supply pressure
ranges from 0.2 to 0.4Mpa if steam is used for heating and humidifying.

4. While operating the AHU manually, shut down the cooling valve, heating valve and humidifying valve in time when fans
stop running.

5. Make sure hot water continuously runs through the coil if the AHU is at halt in winter and close the fresh air inlet in
order to avoid frozen-break.

6. Do not open the service door for preventing any accident or absorbing sundries while the AHU is running.

7. While it’s in heating operation, water valve must not be open before fans start-up, and fans must not stop until the
water valve has shut down for five minutes.

8. Start-up order of the AHU shall be: connect heating/cooling source of coils, start the fans, connect steam source of
humidifier. Stop order is opposite. Consider the interaction of functional sections if the unit is multi-functional.

9. Send a professional to manage and examine the AHU regularly, remove abnormal things in time and take note, run the
AHU only after fault is removed.

3.2 Maintenance
1. Take the first check after one-month operation to see if the belts and bolts are loose. If any, fix them. Ever since take
checks on regular basis.

2. Regularly check the operation and drive of fans and motors. Regularly check the belt tightness, abrasion , if found
loose or gliding, fix it by adjusting the bolts at bottom of motor. Regularly check bearings if lubricated enough and
replenish lithium grease regularly. Not for service-free motors.

3. Examine the filter regularly, clean or replace it if resistance comes to the end resistance. Air-dry the washed filter totally
before reuse. Cleaning frequency depends on ambient environment.

4. Examine seals of components regularly and replace the aging seals.

5. If the AHU sleeps for long while ambient temperature is under 5°C, drain all water in the coils, and clear away the
remaining water by using 0.6~1.0Mpa compressed air. Meanwhile inner temperature must not be kept under 2°C.
Make sure hot water continuously runs through the coil if the unit is at halt in winter. Drain the cooling/heating coil and
close the fresh air inlet if AHU sleeps through the whole winter.

6. Fully clean the AHU after every half year’s operation, clear away the dust on the coils by using compressed air and/or
high pressure water.

7. Fully maintain the AHU after 2~3 years’ operation. Clear away the scale deposit inside the copper coils by chemical
method. Clear away the dust on the coils by using compressed air and/or high pressure water.

8. Clear away on regular basis the dust on the fan and inside the duct to avoid rust and obstruction.

9. Adjustment&repair is needed when problems such as current overload, abnormal noise, belt looseness, fan equiver,
over high temperature etc. are found.

12
3. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Belt adjustment
Proper tightness of the belt is important to guarantee the operation. If too loose, transmission efficiency is decreased due to
low friction and belt may glide. If too tight, service life of belt will be shortened, pressure to motor shaft and bearing will be
increased, which may cause loose of belt as well.

Adjustment must be made after the first 24 hours’ running, and once every 1000hours ever since.

Tightness degree adjustment

As per the above picture, press slightly on the belt to see if its sinkage is among 1~2cm. If not, adjust the central distance
of the two belt pulleys.

Straightness adjustment

As shown as above picture, the two belt pulleys are on the same plane.

When the belt is fully adjusted, tighten the positioning nuts.

Belt replacement
Loose the nut of the fan support frame and move the motor toward the fan, then take off the belt. All belts must be
replaced at the same time if more belts are used.

3. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

3. 3 Site Inspection of AHU

Inspect and make following notes while the AHU is running.

Result
No. Contents
Normal Abnormal

Water temperatures entering and leaving the coil, water pressure, note if anything’s
1
abnormal.

Steam temperature and pressure decompressed and entered the heating coil, note
2
if anything’s abnormal.

Temperature of the steam entering the humidifier, and working condition of drain
3
valve.

Check that if the current and voltage of start-up box are normal, and EA fan is
4
working or not, check if any failure with start-up box.

5 Listen carefully to the SA&RA fans and ducts to check if the noises are normal.

6 Check the soft-connection of SA outlet to see if it is tight enough or crack.

7 Check the quiver of running fan to see if it’s normal and steady.

Check the fan base to see if it is loose, and check the two belt pulleys to see if they
8
are on the same plane.

9 Temperatures of the motor bearings and fan shafts.

Check that if any collision between the shell and the impeller, or if any unexpected
10
thing inside the fan.

11 Check to see if any abnormal noise inside the AHU.

12 Check the manual valve and electric valve of the steam pipe to see if they are leaky.

Check the manual valve and electric valve of the cold water pipe to see if they are
13
leaky.

14 Check the steam collection pipe to see if it is pourable.

15 Check the condensate draining to see if it is smooth in Summer.

16 Check the AHU to see if it is leaky.

Check the AHU housing to see if any distortion (mainly resulted from incoordination
17
of damper).
