This Caterpillar Fundamental English Persons and


Numbers module is designed to explain basic grammar
and the structure of very simple sentences in the
English language.

This training is necessary for non-English speaking
technicians to be able to read and understand
Caterpillar Service literature in order to service
Caterpillar equipment. Use of the knowledge gained in
this course will ensure the participant’s ability to provide
effective customer service, which enhances customer
satisfaction.

Some approaches to practicing the new words include:


• Identify participants by personal pronoun: I, you, he, we
• Use the possessive form of personal pronouns: My tractor
• Combine pronouns and verbs: I come, you go
• Use nouns and articles with verbs: The technician works
• Use the plural form of nouns: The men work, the tractors have
• Add numbers to sentences: Three men work.
• Add an adjective to a sentence: Three good men work.
• Add more detail to the sentence: Three good men work for the dealer.

Nouns and Numbers

• Identify nouns and numbers. A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, thing, or idea. A concrete
noun names something that you can actually see, touch, taste, hear, or smell. An
abstract noun names an idea, feeling, emotion, or quality.
• You are a person.
• The tractor is small.
• The tire is good.
• He is a manager.
• They are managers.

The numbers zero through ten are:


0 = ZERO
1 = ONE
2 = TWO
3 = THREE
4 = FOUR
5 = FIVE
6 = SIX
7 = SEVEN
8 = EIGHT
9 = NINE
10 = TEN

Personal Pronouns

personal pronouns

• Identify personal pronouns. Personal pronouns refer to specific people and things and take the place of a noun.
• You are a person.
• It has a diesel engine.
• I work here.
• He is a manager.
• They are managers.

Important points for understanding pronouns include:

• I is not the roman numeral I (one), but personal pronoun I, which is always
capitalized.
• Singular and plural forms of you are always the same.

The pronouns he, she, and it require the addition of an s or es at the end of a verb.

• He goes.
• It comes.
• She works.

Verbs

• To go (went): He went to work. He goes to work.


• To work (worked): I worked for the dealer.
• To come (came): You came to work.
• To have (had): We have five technicians.
• To be (am, are, is) It is an engine.

Adverbs
• Here are two tractor dealers.
• The tractor is here.

• Identify verbs and adverbs. A verb is a word that shows action or being. Whatever you’re doing can be
expressed by a verb. Without a verb, a group of words cannot be a sentence.
The verb to be is the most used verb in the English language and in the present
tense is used as follows:
• I am
• You are
• He is
• She is
• It is
• We are
• They are
An adverb is a word that tells more about a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
It can be said that an adverb describes or modifies (limits the meaning of) these
words.
Adverbs answer three questions about the verbs they describe:
1. How?
2. When?
3. Where?

The three most common adverbs in the English language are not, very, and too.

• It is a good tractor
• An engine is on the tractor.
• The technician is at work.

Conjunctions
and or
• The manager or dealer has the tool.
• We learn to work on small and large tractors.

• Identify articles and A, an, and the are words called articles. They are noun signals and can give a hint
conjunctions. that there is a noun coming up in the sentence.

A noun could be the very next word after an article:


• A technician worked on the tractor.
• He worked on an engine.

Or it could be one or more words later:


• A good technician worked on the large tractor.
• He worked on a small engine.

A conjunction is a word that joins other words or parts of sentences together.


Common conjunctions include and and or.

Adjectives

• It is a good tire.
• The dealer has two managers.
• A D8T is a large tractor.

Prepositions
• He is going to work.
• The manual is for the dealer.
• One of the tractors is here.

• Identify adjectives and An adjective is a word that tells more about a noun or a pronoun. An adjective
prepositions. describes or modifies (limits the use of) a noun. This module introduces four
adjectives:
• Small
• Large
• Good
• Bad
Adjectives usually answer three questions about the nouns they describe:
1. What kind of?
2. How many?
3. Which one (or which ones)?
This, that, these, and those are adjectives that point out nouns. They always
answer the question which one(s)?
Usually adjectives come in front of the noun that they describe.
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship of one word in a sentence to
another word. The four things that prepositions tell are:
• Where something is (location).
• Where something is going (direction).
• When something happens (time).
• The relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word.
