ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS RANGE

TENSION RODS

Dextra’s Tension Rod system is complete with pin ended connectors (forks or spades).
Typical applications include hangers and supports, cross bracing and truss stiffening
elements. A number of different strength grades and surface finishes are available.
Where there should be no compromise on aesthetic, a stainless tension rod product
range complements our offer.

COMPRESSION STRUTS

The Dextra Compression Strut system is designed specifically to take compression loads. It
consists of a circular hollow section (CHS) complete with fork ends, making installation and site
length adjustments convenient and simple.

ROLL-THREAD MANUFACTURING
All Dextra Rods feature rolled (not cut) threads. The
thread rolling process redistributes the material to form
the thread giving it maximum efficiency over the active
stress area. The result is a minimal loss of the effective
cross-sectional area.

CAD & BIM

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION BENEFITS

Tension Rods systems provides engineers and architects with an • High steel grades are available, allowing
aesthetic and high performance solution for tensile members for the use of smaller rod diameters to achieve
any type of structure such as roofs, bridges and facades. Fast the same tension capacity, which in turn
installation can be achieved thanks to the simplicity of the design. can make site installation both quicker and
easier.

DESIGN REFERENCES • In situ length adjustment can be achieved by

rotation of the rod (if the tendon is supplied
without turnbuckle) and/or of the turnbuckle.
Dextra Tension Rods systems are compliant with and can be
selected according to EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) • Adjustment is possible on Forks and Spades.

• Turnbuckles also allow for the application of

a preload, making for example self-weight
sagging corrections easier.

STEEL GRADES AND PROPERTIES

Dextra supplies its tension rods in three carbon steel grades and two stainless steel grades, as specified in the table below.
Carbon Steel Stainless Steel

460 520 700 S460 S520

Minimum yield strength N/mm² 460 520 700 460 520

Minimum ultimate tensile strength N/mm² 625 670 900 650 670

The length we quote and supply is the “pin-to-pin nominal length”, which is measured from the center of each pin connected
member. Dextra will then design and fabricate the system so that equal lengthening and shortening adjustment can be achieved
while still ensuring a full strength connection between the rod and the pin connected member.

Length adjustment is possible at the turnbuckle (M ≤ 24, ±25 mm, M > 24, ±50 mm), as well as at each Fork and Spade.

ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM ACCESSORIES

The standard accessories for tension rods system are the following:
Spade Fork

Forks and Spades allow connection to the main steel structure (using a pin connection),
creating an articulated joint when required (eg. long span tendon). They allow for length
adjustment.

Pin connections consist of 1 pin and 2 washer plates.

Intermediate connectors are used to achieve longer tendon length as follows:

Turnbuckles are used to connect rods and achieve greater tendon length.
They also allow additional length adjustment and if necessary can be used to
pre-stress the tendon.

Couplers are used to connect rods and achieve greater tendon length.

Lock covers are used both for aesthetic and functional purposes to respectively
cover exposed thread and lock connectors in position.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Dextra Carbon Steel Compression Strut system is

designed specifically to take compression loads. It consists of
a circular hollow section (CHS) complete with fork ends, and
ranges from 42mm to 324mm, making installation and site
length adjustments convenient and simple.

Compression Struts are available in two versions: Architectural

and Non-Architectural. Both versions allow for length
adjustment. Thread diameters range from M16 to M103.

DESIGN REFERENCES

Dextra Compression Strut systems are compliant with, and can be

selected according to the following international standards:

• EN 1993 (EC3)
• ANSI/AISC 360-05 Load & Resistance Factor Design method (LRFD)
• ANSI/AISC 360-05 Allowable Stress Design method (ASD)
• AS 4100

ALTERNATIVE DESIGNS
Architectural Strut
Cone Fork Dextra Compression Struts are available in
Architectural and Non-Architectural versions.

Architectural Struts use a longer cone to allow for

the smooth transition between fork and CHS.

A collar hides the threads in case part of it is exposed

after length adjustment.
CHS Collar
These two features result in a smoother design.
Dextra recommends this solution especially when
Non-architectural Strut aesthetics is a key criteria.

Non-architectural Struts use a shorter cone and

do not feature a collar. Threads may be visible after
length adjustment.

This option is available whenever a more economical

solution is required.

LOAD CAPACITY
The following table serves as a guide to select the most appropriate system, showing the maximum compression capacity of
Compression Struts for a given pin-to-pin length. The compression capacity is limited by the resitance to buckling and fork capacity.
Buckling resistance depends on the size of the circular hollow section (CHS) and the pin-to-pin length. Capacities are given as per
EN 1993 (EC3).

SURFACE FINISH & CORROSION PROTECTION

Dextra carbon steel tension rods and compression struts can either be delivered plain, painted or galvanized.
Threads of components are never painted. For stainless steel tension rods mirror and satin finish are available.

PLAIN SURFACE (BLACK STEEL)

Goods can be delivered without any kind of surface coating.

PRIMER

Primer only can be applied to allow minimum surface coating Plain surface
protection until intermediate/top coats are applied on site by
customer. Atmospheric-corrosivity category shall be specified
by Customer as defined in ISO12944-2. If not specified, Dextra
will offer a Class C3 (medium).

It is recommended that the top coat is applied and the

tightening is completed by the customer after assembly on
site. This will prevent any damage on the surface finish during
handling.

GALVANIZATION Primer finish

Hot-dip galvanization is performed as per ASTM A123 with a

minimum thickness of 80 microns.

Galvanized finish
STAINLESS STEEL TENSION RODS

Two surface finishes are available in satin and mirror. If not specified, satin finish will be selected.

Satin finish: Mirror finish:

POST-INSTALLATION SEALING

It is recommended to inject a sealant in order to

protect the thread (the only non coated part in the
assembly) from corrosion.

To do so, inject it through the opening in the fork

chamber and under the gap of the lock cover.

Dextra recommends the use of Loctite 5068

(paintable sealant, medium strength, white color).

Dextra forks are designed so that the thread never

protudes into the fork chamber no matter the Fork chamber
length adjustment. Therefore, the thread will never
be visible, guaranteeing perfect aesthetics and
facilitating sealant injection.

TRANSPORTATION & INSTALLATION

RODS PACKING INSTALLATION MANUAL

Dextra pays particular attention to the packing of all its rods Detailed installation method statement will be provided at
and components to ensure safe delivery of the products. time of delivery.

The process includes the individual protective packing of the

steel rods and various solutions such as steel racks, boxes or TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING
tailor made packing structures. AND STORAGE
Rods can also be packaged with air bags to protect both rods
and coating during sea shipment.
Dextra tension rods should be transported in containers or
covered vehicles. Do not drag and/or drop the rods.
ACCESSORIES PACKING
For assemblies longer than 6m, a spreader should be used for
lifting to prevent the rods from over bending.
Similarly, accessories can be shipped in wooden boxes, crates,
All products must be stored in a dry, covered and well-
wrapped on pallets or secured on specific packing structures.
ventilated area, on wooden sleepers and not directly on the
ground.
