• Моретти: «the repeatable element of literature: what returns fundamentally unchanged over many
Фор cases and many years».
The real difference seems to lie instead in the divergent construals of the literary field (the literary whole) as an
object of study. For quantitative formalists, the call to “think big” (Jockers) or to include “the great unread”
(Moretti, adopting the expression from Margaret Cohen) conceives of literature as a vast undifferentiated field
(or a series of such vast fields), “a bag of words”, which yields information in the domain of averages. The
theorists of the OPOIAZ understood the task of “thinking big” as involving an understanding of literary history
as a field of multiple articulations ‒ interplays between constructive and subordinate elements, deformations,
inflections, changes in intensity ‒ a field, moreover, in which the Formalist project itself inevitably participates.
In such a context, averages can carry little information because they are bound to treat heterogeneous things as
homogenous, bound, for example, to equate constructive factors to subordinate ones, to place forms (which
must be located anew in every concrete instance) in the same “bag” with materials. What mattered for the
Formalists were not so much the great names as the important moments, the deformations and inflections, which
could occur in a minor poet’s work (e.g. in Kiukhel’beker’s ‘Argiviane’) before they occurred in the work of a
“genius” (e.g. in Pushkin’s Boris Godunov). In short, it is not in the end a matter of one method “thinking big”
and the other setting for itself small, unambitious tasks; rather we are dealing with two fundamentally divergent
conceptions of what that big thing, the literary whole, ultimately is.
We can speak, then, of two divergent social imaginaries organizing the two
formalisms here at issue: the historico-political orientation of the literary
theory of the OPOIAZ and the socio-economic horizon of quantitative
formalism. Two distinct conceptualizations of form, history and society emerge
within these orientations. Early-twentieth-century Soviet Formalism construed
literary form as participating in the project of renewing and reorganizing
experience, consciousness, and language. Literary form was viewed as active,
as something that can be felt by the senses (rather than merely cognized),
called upon to re-animate our sense of participation in collective historical life.
By contrast, early-twenty-first-century computational formalism tends to study
literary history in terms of patterns, chronologically mapped averages, and a
dualist, or correlationist, conception of the relationship between historical
experience and literary form. The project here, as far as it is possible to
generalize, runs parallel to the logic of technological and statistical mastery ‒
no longer of nature (as in the physical sciences) or of society (as in the social
sciences), but of the signifying imaginary itself, the human capacity for
meaning.
