Imagine that you are doing a project on what book genres are popular among
teenagers in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject – the results of
the opinion polls (see the table below).
Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of
the project.
Adventure 31
Detective/war/spy stories 29
Sports stories 23
Animal stories 12

The data in the table reveals that the most popular book genre among
adolescents in Zetland is adventure (31%), with detective, war and spy stories
following (29%). The least favoured genre of books is romance with 5% of the
respondents choosing it. It is also noticeable that quite a large proportion of those
surveyed is keen on sports and animal stories – 23% and 12% respectively.
Looking more closely at the table, we can note that sports stories appear to
be loved almost twice as much as animal stories. It is surprising because in my
country most teenagers find reading about sports extremely boring in comparison
with books about animals.
Unfortunately, in the modern world people tend to avoid book genres that
evoke empathy, and this may result in a lack of emotional intelligence. However,
there is a solution to this problem. Schools and public libraries should organise
reading and discussion clubs in order to make children and adults understand
various emotions and feelings, thus helping them empathise with book characters
and people around.

As can be seen in the pie chart, smartphones are mostly used to send and
receive emails and to make phone calls, 30% and 27% respectively. It is also clear
that the least common purpose of using smartphones appears to be paying for
purchases (10%).
Based on the pie chart, surfing the Internet (17%) is only 1% more popular
than playing games (16%). It is not surprising because people need a balance
between work or studies and relaxation.
Despite the fact that smartphones are really useful, more and more people
are becoming too dependent on these devices. I think that reducing time spent on
the smartphone is the best solution to this problem. For example, people should
opt for face-to-face communication instead of emailing because it is faster and
does not result in losing communication skills.

Task 4
Задание
Imagine that you and your friend are doing a project “Sports activities”. You
have found some photos to illustrate it but for technical reasons you cannot
send them now. Leave a voice message to your friend explaining your
choice of the photos and sharing some ideas about the project. In 2.5
minutes be ready to:
● explain the choice of the illustrations for the project by briefly describing
them and noting the differences;
● mention the advantages (1–2) of the two sports activities;
● mention the disadvantages (1–2) of the two sports activities;
● express your opinion on the subject of the project – which of the sports
activities presented in the pictures you’d prefer and why.
You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to
talk continuously.

Hi, Vasya! I’ve just found two photos for our project "Sports activities" and
I’d like to tell you about them and share my ideas.
In the first photo there is a man in a football outfit running on a field. The
man is about to kick the ball probably in order to score a goal. The second photo
depicts a girl in a swimming pool. She is wearing a swimming suit and a swimming
hat. The girl is standing in the water and holding the handle of a jumping platform.
In my opinion, these photos are perfectly suitable for our project because they
show two different sports activities. In the first picture it is football training, while in
the second picture it is swimming. Another difference is that the girl has just
finished swimming, she looks satisfied and she is about to go out of water,
whereas the man is still training, he looks focused on what he is doing.
I think that both sports activities presented in the photos have their
advantages. For example, football develops stamina and increases coordination.
Besides, it promotes teamwork. As for swimming, its main benefit is that it helps
get rid of stress. Apart from that, swimming improves flexibility.
That’s all for now. I hope you like the photos for our project and my ideas!
