The name United Nations, coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was
first used on the 1 of January in 1942 in the Declaration of the United Nations during World
st
War II, when representatives of 26 nations pledged on behalf of their governments to continue
the common (joint/mutual) fight/struggle against the Axis Powers.
The forerunner of the UN was the League of Nations, an organization conceived under
similar circumstances during World War I and established in 1919 under the terms of the Treaty
of Versailles to promote international cooperation and to ensure/maintain peace and security.
The League of Nations ceased its activities as a result of its inability to prevent World War II.
In 1945 representatives of 50 countries attended the United Nations Conference on
International Organization in San Francisco to draw up the United Nations Charter. The Charter
was signed on 26 June 1945. The United Nations has formally existed since 24 October 1945, by
that date, the Charter had been ratified by Britain, China, the U.S.S.R, The United States, France
and most other signatories.
