Literature review demonstrated in the article focused on interaction of capsaicin (vaniloid receptor agonist) and peptide-
containing afferent nerves as well as capsaicin effect on oxidative stress. Our results showed that deafferentation with
capsaicin produced the increase in products of lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase- and catalase-like activity in rat
blood serum and liver tissue supernatants. Inhibitors of nitric oxide synthesis (L-NAME and 7-nitroindasole) increased
lipid peroxidation in norm and amplified the oxidative effect of capsaicin. The results suggest that capsaicin-sensitive
nerves and nitric oxide play a role in modulating oxidative metabolism of lipids and antioxidative defense.
Key words: capsaicin-sensitive nerves, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase.
