The Past Continuous Tense.

Случаи употребления
в английском языке
Past Continuous Tense входит в группу длительных времен Continuous, в которой кроме
него еще есть:
1. The Present Continuous Tense — настоящее длительное время глагола (знать
обязательно)
2. The Past Continuous Tense — прошедшее длительное время глагола (знать
желательно)
3. The Future Continuous Tense — будущее длительное время глагола (знать
необязательно)

Времена группы Continuous похожи как братья-близнецы. Так в построении

утвердительного предложения участвует вспомогательный глагол be; после be
ставится причастие настоящего времени (действие с окончанием –ING). Подробнее

 Вспомогательный глагол be изменяется по временам согласно таблице.

—  Спряжение глагола BE по временам.
 Отрицательные и вопросительные предложения в Past Continuous строятся
также как и в Present Continuous.

Вас ждет много упражнений для отработки Past Continuous Tense, начиная с самых

употребления Past Continuous Tense. Всего их 4.

The Past Continuous Tense. Случаи употребления в

английском языке
Случай I. Past Continuous выражает действие, которое протекало в определенный
момент в прошлом, в отличие от Present Continuous, которое выражает действие, которое
протекает в момент речи.

Случай II. Past Continuous употребляется для выражения длительного действия

(процесса) на фоне которого произошло краткое действие. Краткое действие (в Past
Simple) произошло в  определенный момент времени в прошлом.

 
Случай I = Случай II так как момент времени в прошлом может быть выражен кратким
действием в прошедшем времени (Past Simple). Представьте себе, что вас спрашивают, что
вы делали вчера в 7 часов. Вы не помните, так как не смотрели в тот момент на часы.
Тогда спрашивающий уточняет, это было тогда, когда ваш отец вернулся с работы. И тут
вы вспоминаете, что в тот момент, когда ваш отец вернулся с работы, вы сидели на диване
и смотрели телевизор. Понятно?
Итак, when your father came from work обозначает определенный момент в прошлом
(например,  at 7 o’clock) и является одним из основных случаев употребления этого
времени.

Случай III. Past Continuous употребляется для выражения двух длительных действий

(процессов), протекающих одновременно в определенный момент времени в прошлом.

Случай IV. Past Continuous употребляется для выражения длительного действия

(процесса), протекавшего в определенный ПЕРИОД времени в прошлом.
 1. from … till —  с … до…
2. all day – весь день
3. the whole evening – целый вечер
Изучающие английский язык часто не знают, когда в прошедшем времени употреблять
Past Continuous, а когда Past Simple. Изучите сравнительную таблицу ниже, в которой
наглядна видна разница между этими английскими временами.

СЛУЧАЙ I. Вспомните! Past Continuous употребляется для выражения длительного

действия (процесса), которое происходило в определенный момент времени в
прошлом.
Упражнение 2. Заполните пропуски глаголом в Past Continuous, используя правильную
форму глагола be.
1.  I ………… reading a book at 4 o’clock yesterday.
2. You ………. reading a book…
3. He ………. reading a book…
4. We ………. reading a book…

Упражнение 4. Раскройте скобки, употребляя  глаголы в Present Continuous или Past

Continuous.
1. I ______(to write) an English exercise now. I _______(to write) an English exercise at
this time yesterday.
2. My little sister _______(to sleep) now. My little sister ________(to sleep) at this time
yesterday.
3. My friends _______(not to do) their homework now. They _______(to play) volleyball.
4. My friends ______(not to do) their homework at seven o’clock yesterday. They
______(to play) volleyball.
5. What _____you ______(to do) now? — I _______(to drink) tea. ______you ______(to

The Past Continuous Tense – прошедшее длительное время глагола часто путают с
прошедшем простым временем (The Past Simple Tense). Давайте разберемся, чем
отличаются эти времена друг от друга, для начала по построению.  Для этого

СЛУЧАЙ II. Вспомните! Past Continuous употребляется для выражения длительного

действия (процесса) на фоне которого произошло краткое действие. Краткое действие (в
Past Simple) произошло в  определенный момент времени в прошлом.
Упражнение 5. Заполните пропуски глаголом в Past Continuous и переведите
предложения.
1. When I went out into the garden, the sun ______(to shine).

СЛУЧАЙ III. Вспомните! Past Continuous употребляется для выражения двух длительных
действий (процессов), протекающих одновременно в определенный момент времени в
прошлом.
Упражнение 10. Составьте предложения по  картинкам.

ОБРАЗЕЦ. While we were talking to our

friend, he was painting the fence.

1. People were standing frightened while the tiger…

Упражнение 11. Составьте предложения по образцу,

используя Past Simple или PastContinuous.

ОБРАЗЕЦ.  Mum/wash up/telephone/ring. — Mum was washing up when the telephone

rang.

1. Tom/have a shower/doorbell/ring.
2. I/study/Jill/call.
3. Dad/have breakfast/post/arrive.
4. Nancy/read a book/she/hear a noise.
5. John/shop in town/he/meet Kevin.
6. The whole class/write a test/I/come.
7. We/drive along Park Avenue/something/go wrong in the car.

Упражнение 12. Прочитайте историю, которая вполне могла случиться. Выберите

правильный вариант глагола-действия.
I (met/was meeting) a friend while I (did/was doing)  the shopping. While I (paid/was
paying)  for my things,  I (heard/was hearing)  someone call my name. I (turned/was
turning) round and (saw/seeing) Paula. She (wore/was wearing) bright red coat.
We (decided/were deciding)  to have a cup of coffee. 6While we (had/ were having) a drink, a

Упражнение 4. Заполните пропуски в диалоге, используя глаголы

в Past Simple или Past Continuous.
Ann:   How ____ your holiday at the seaside?
Ben:   Oh, it ____ wonderful, thank you! We ____ great fun!
Ann:   What (you / do)______________there?
Ben:   In the mornings, while my parents still (have breakfast) _______, I (play) _____  tennis

Упражнение 6. Заполните пропуски в диалоге, используя глаголы

в Past Simple или Past Continuous.
Вспомните! Если действия происходят одно за другим, то для их обозначения
используется только Past Simple.
