Preface
Archaeology and linguistics are two
closely related branches of the Humanities.
They are similar in their disciplinary origins,
their methods, and in many ways also in their
subject matter: the study of the history of
human societies. This volume presents the
papers of a conference on ‘Archaeology and
Linguistics: Exchange of Knowledge in
Human History’ which was held in
September 2012 at Simferopol and Yalta
(Crimea, Ukraine).
The first part of the volume contains
papers dealing with the history of scholar­
ship: the origins and development of the
various disciplines within the humanities
which were still encyclopaedic in their out­
look and undifferentiated in their organisa­
tion; and their subsequent division and sep­
aration into national schools within their
respective countries, schools which some­
times differed markedly in their research
subjects and methods, and which were at
times exploited for political purposes. The
second part comprises interdisciplinary
studies which employ both archaeological
and linguistic evidence and arguments. The
locale of the conference has inspired the
papers of the third part which is devoted to
the North Pontic region. The fourth and last
part, entitled ‘Chronicle’, assembles the
report on our conference, and information
on the conservation project dealing with the
ancient Chinese lacquer boxes found in the
Crimea. At the time of writing, these boxes
are on display in the Allard Pierson
Museum, Amsterdam (Netherlands), in an
exhibition entitled ‘The Crimea: The Gold
and the Secrets of the Black Sea’. Earlier,
they were the centrepieces of a Crimea exhi­
bition at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum
Bonn (Germany).
The contributions published here have
been penned in four languages: English,
German, Russian and Ukrainian, mirroring
the conference on which this volume is
based. Understanding several languages
does not only enrich the culture of an indi­
vidual - it crucially widens the scientific
horizon of scholars, giving access to the var­
ious national schools of research which had
developed more or less in isolation through­
out the 20th century. Multilingualism, by
contrast, is the basis of scholarship without
frontiers. Overcoming frontiers, thereby
transforming national research into interna­
tional knowledge, is one of the key aims of
the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
This volume is dedicated to the Foundation,
in gratitude for their financial and moral
support throughout.
