Shadow Experiment

Equipment:
Children can work alone or in small groups. Each child/group will need:
• a piece of paper
• a pencil
• a toy figure
• a ruler

Carrying out the experiment:

• The experiment needs to be carried out on a sunny day.
• You will need a window that faces the sun, so the
shadow clearly moves throughout the day.
• Make sure you have a suitable flat surface by the
window to put the paper on.
• If you don’t have a suitable window, the experiment
could be carried out outside in the playground if the
weather allows.
• It might help to use sticky tack to secure the toys to the
paper, so they don’t move.

1. Stand your toy figure on the piece of paper near a sunny window.

2. Trace around their shadow.

3. Write the time you drew the shadow.

4. After 1 hour, trace around the shadow of your toy figure again.
Be careful to keep the toy in the same place.

5. Each hour for all the school day, trace around their shadow and write down the
time you drew it.
