Past Perfect

fast.

I had been teaching English for ten years
when we met.
1. Время Past Perfect Continuous передает
длительное действие, которое началось
до определенного момента в прошлом и
продолжалось в этот момент.

• She had been cooking for an hour when I came –


Она готовила уже час, когда я пришел (и
продолжала готовить)

• She had been training for a few months and was


very fit when I met her – Когда я ее встретил, она
тренировалась уже несколько месяцев и была в
отличной форме.
2. Время Past Perfect Continuous
используется для выражения
длительного действия, которое
началось до определенного момента
(или действия) в прошлом и
закончилось прямо перед ним.

• It had been snowing the whole night and the road


was very slippery when I started my way.
– Всю ночь шел снег, и дорога была очень
скользкой, когда я отправился в путь.
Время Past Perfect Continuous нередко
путают с Past Continuous. Оба времени
выражают длительное действие в
прошлом, единственное различие состоит
в том, что если продолжительность
действия не указана, следует выбрать Past
Continuous:
• I WAS TALKING ON THE PHONE WHEN
HE ENTERED THE ROOM – Я
РАЗГОВАРИВАЛ ПО ТЕЛЕФОНУ,
КОГДА ОН ВОШЕЛ В КОМНАТУ.
Если продолжительность действия указана,
выбираем Past Perfect Continuous:

• I had been talking on the phone


for half an hour when he entered
the room – Я разговаривал по
телефону уже полчаса, когда он
вошел в комнату.
Указатели:
for — на протяжении, в течение
before — прежде чем;
since — с тех пор как
how long — как долго
until/till — пока, до тех пор как;
all morning, all day, all night long
— все утро, весь день, всю ночь;
by — к определенному моменту
(в прошлом)
- Henry … (to wait) for half an hour
before he saw his girlfriend getting off
the tram.
- Driving to the hospital was difficult
as it … (to snow) all night.
- Polly … (to study) economy since
she entered university.
1.Sally (to type) this text for 3 hours before Mark
came.
2.Anthony (to wait) for his airplane for 3 hours when
its delay was announced.
3.I saw many huge puddles. It (to rain) hard?
4.Sam did not even realize what a hard time Molly
(to have).
5.Rita (to train) for a year and she was very fit when
Sam met her.

Past Continuous/Past Perfect Continuous
1.Tom was sitting on the chair, out of breath. He (to run).
I tried to catch Tom but I couldn't. He (to run) very fast.
2.Jim was on his hands and knees on the floor. He
(to look) for his cigarette lighter.
3.We (to walk) along the road for about 20 minutes when a
car stopped and the driver offered us a lift.
4.When I arrived, everyone (to sit) round the table with
their mouths full. They (to eat).
5.When I arrived, everyone (to sit) round the table and
talking. Their mouths were empty but their stomachs
were full. They (to eat).
6.When I arrived, Ann (to wait) for me. She was rather
annoyed with me because I was late and she (to wait) for
me a very long time.
