Abstract: This article examines the connection between language and culture through
A.Wierzbcka’s Natural Semantic Metalanguage Theory and the related Theory of Cultural
Scripts. The article also identifies the practical significance of these theories for ensuring
successful intercultural communication and the need of using them while teaching a foreign
language.
Keywords: Natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) theory, intercultural awareness,
theory of cultural scripts, semantic universals, semantic primes, bilingualism, emotional
scripts.

relations over centuries caused devaluation of the English word ‘ friend’) [2].
This, therefore, results in semantic differences between words from different
languages. Culture here can be defined as ‘a historically transmitted pattern of
meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in
symbolic forms by means of which people communicate, perpetuate and
develop their knowledge about and attitudes toward life’[2, p. 20]. Also, she
believes that as our language affects our thinking as our thinking in its turn may
influence our language and this also results in semantic differences between
words from different languages.
It is thought that one of the ways to study cultures is by analysing the
lexicon and grammatical constructions of the languages. Wierzbicka points out
that not only the existence of culture-specific words can demonstrate the
differences in languages. In addition, she thinks that the elaboration of
vocabulary as well as frequency of its use and common collocations can be the
signs of the inadequacy of the words. So, she claims that if a very common
Russian word is matched with a rarely used English one, ‘this difference
suggests a difference in cultural salience’ (e.g. the frequency ratio of ‘rodina’ to
‘homeland’ is 30:1) [2, p. 12].
According to Wierzbicka, one more source of information for the semantic
differences between the languages is ‘key words’, the ones which are said to be
‘of special importance in a given culture’ [2, p. 16]. These words are thought to
be common, frequently used in a particular semantic area, can be the core of a
phraseological group. She believes that, by analysing these ‘key words’, their
collocations and grammatical constructions, one can learn a lot about people’s
attitudes, values, expectations or conversational routines which determine
culture-specific cultural scripts [2]. Furthermore, the English language should
not be used for a semantic analysis of other languages because it carries its own
universe of meanings and would bias the investigation against the culture being
investigated [4].
Wierzbicka shows that conceptual systems in different languages are not
similar and, in order to be able to compare them, one would need to find a
common measure. She believes that all languages ‘exhibit both differences and
similarities; that the study of diversity can lead to the discovery of universals’
[2, p. 23]. Also, she claims that these language universals comprise a culture-
independent metalanguage and can be used to ‘study both diversity and
universality of culture and cognition’ [4, p. 260]. This belief prompted her to
introduce natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) theory. It is believed that the
NSM approach allows linguists to study the commonalities and differences in
the vocabularies of different languages.
Natural semantic metalanguage theory is based on two assumptions: ‘first,
that in every language there is a finite number of word-meanings ('semantic
primes') which are indefinable and in terms of which all the other complex
meanings can be analysed; and second, that the sets of such semantic primes
33
coincide across languages’ [5, p. 40]. So far Wierzbicka has proposed a list of
approximately 60 ‘semantic primes’ or universals (e.g. ’I- you’, ’big- small’,
’see’, ’live’) and argues that all of them have been established empirically. It is
thought that, to identify the meanings of the words, these semantic primitives
should be combined in certain ways. Therefore, the NSM theory is said to set
certain innate and universal rules of syntax which describe ‘universally available
combinatorial patterns of primitive concepts’ [5, p. 42]. For example, it is
claimed that the English sentence ’I want to do this’ has its semantic equivalents
in all languages (‘Я хочу это сделать’(rus), ‘Yo quiero hacer esto’(sp)).
According to this theory, if the linguistic analysis is realised using these
primitives and the rules of their combination, it can be ‘transposed’ without any
loss of meaning into any language.
The practical value of NSM theory is obvious: it can help us to realise
successful communication in the educational environment. It is very useful for
students to learn semantic differences in their first and target language in order
to avoid disappointment or misunderstanding. It can be very useful for any
people, who plan to move to an English speaking country or work with English-
speaking business partners, to learn the semantic differences in their first
language and English, in order to avoid disappointment or misunderstanding.
For example, Wierzbicka demonstrates that the concept of a present-day English
word ‘friend’, as a person ‘fun-to-be-with’ is culture-specific and differs not
only from a complicated Russian word ‘drug’ but even from the older English
meaning of the word. So, a Russian speaker, who treats an English speaker as a
‘drug’, is seen to be intrusive [2].
However, Wierzbicka herself is more interested in another aspect of
bilingualism, such as the relation between multilingualism and emotions. She
thinks that ‘the set of concepts by means of which the speakers of any given
language make sense of their own and other people’s feelings is specific to a
particular language’ [6, p. 94]. This specificity can be explained by different
cultural models and different emotional scripts and can cause a linguistic,
cultural and emotional misunderstanding [6]. She thinks that subjective
experience of bilinguals is quite valuable for semantic analysis of emotion
concepts and offers an anecdotal evidence of her Polish-English observations.
Wierzbicka herself points out the differences in English and Polish emotional
scripts (e.g. Anglo emotional self-control vs. Polish ideal of sustained
interpersonal warmth).
Furthermore, Wierzbicka insists that different emotional vocabularies affect
the way people think about their experiences, and this different thinking in its turn
influences people’s emotions. It is not just the emotional lives of speakers of
different languages which is going to be different. It is claimed that ‘different
languages are linked with different ways of thinking as well as different ways of
feeling; they are linked with different attitudes, different ways of relating to
people, different ways of expressing one’s feelings and so on’ [6, p. 98].

Now the politics is an integral part of society life and one of the most
effective tools for impact on it. The solution of many interstate tasks
considerably depends on the language cover they are presented to the society.
For the last 100 years the television shrouded the entire globe and became a part
of the individual life. In many respects thanks to this transmission medium of
54
data practically any information today is available, all spheres of people’s life
and all events are exactly reflected here.
Today television represents the global sphere which includes thousands of
TV channels broadcasting worldwide. Most of citizens judges influence of
television only leaning on the substantial party of telecasts. However, influence
of television is not exhausted by contents of the transferred information. There is
also a set of the mechanisms operating at the person’s unconscious level. TV
viewers are not often informed about them.
Emergence of cable and satellite telecasting allowed to expand significantly
a number of television channels of various orientations and also to reach the
international level in mass media. Thus, the modern viewer has an opportunity
to watch channels of republican and international value and the possibility of the
choice of telecasts appeared. The special place in this sphere is allocated to a
political debate, to a TV interview with political leaders and political broadcasts
in general where the central place is taken by a public statement.
The public statement takes especially important place in political PR-
actions to which, first of all, various forms of the public address of the state and
public figures to citizens and the people belong, as well as reports of party
leaders at congresses and other political forums, performances of participants of
a political debate and also speeches delivered on meetings with voters.
It should be noted that at all types of public statements there are certain
steady structural components which characterize a discourse of a public
statement in general [3, p. 15]. The offered structural model of a discourse of a
public statement is based on the concrete fixed approaches to understanding of
essence of a PR-discourse:
• Each PR-discourse is accompanied by this or that communicative strategy
or intension.
• The PR-discourse is representation of meanings, ideas, images, valuable
orientations, etc.
• At a PR-discourse as any discourse there is not only a visible but also
invisible plan which contexts, background and potentials belong to.
• The PR-discourse bears in itself a certain emotional and power charge
possessing social and psychological energy.
• The PR-discourse is included in wide space of the cultural and historical
communications including dialogue of various generations.
The problems connected with the use of language within a political
discourse are a rather frequent subject of discussion in mass media and scientific
community. People’s interest in policy constantly increases; also such
phenomenon as manipulation needs more detailed consideration.
It is known that the political discourse is an object of studying of linguistic
politology. Throughout long time this discipline was considered only within the
rhetorical researches and its independent formation happened after the events of
55
World War I [5, p. 42]. Post-war changes influenced increase in the interest of
linguists to language ways of people manipulation and to the language of policy.
The political discourse is considered both in wide and in narrow meanings.
In our understanding this term can be carried to everything that is connected
with political activity. According to A.N. Baranov, the political discourse is
“identifying participants of political discourse or forming concrete scope of
political communication” [1, p. 245]. E.I. Sheygal understands this term as any
products of mental and speaking human activity connected with the sphere of
policy [5, p. 35].
In a restricted sense the political discourse is considered only as activity of
politicians and a main goal of a political discourse is capture and deduction of
political influence. Programs of parties, inaugural speech, the presidential appeal
and other types are examples of a political discourse in narrow sense.
The political discourse has the following distinctive features: the semantic
uncertainty which is expressed in a tendency to use abstract concepts and
generalized expressions; the fandom which is embodied that people perceive
information on policy through a prism of mass media; condition of existence of
the political fandom; distancing; theatricality, which is characteristic of a
political discourse because of politicians’ need to act publicly to attract attention
of people [3, p. 27].
In a political discourse language represents the means promoting
penetration of policy into human life. There are various methods of
implementation of such penetration, as, for example, preference of use of “we”
pronoun to “I” pronoun.
The phenomenon of manipulation in policy is capable to cause long-term
consequences and to render strong effect on society life. “New political
conditions led to change of communicative influence methods but the policy is
always race for power and the winner in this fight is usually the one who is
capable to create a world picture in the addressee’s mind beneficial for the
manipulator” [2, p. 76].
Now there are many definitions to the concept of manipulation. So, G.
Schiller understands it as “the hidden coercion programming of thoughts,
intentions, feelings, relations, installations, behavior”, noting that “for achievement
of the greatest success manipulation has to remain imperceptible. The success of
manipulation is guaranteed when the manipulated believes that all events are
natural and inevitable” [5, p. 48]. Speaking about inequality of roles of the sender
and the recipient V.G. Fedotova writes: “manipulation is anti-democratic since it is
aimed at the change of the recipients’ consciousness and behavior with them being
ignorant of it” [5, p. 224]. Within political activity manipulation is considered as
“the hidden management of political consciousness and behavior of people with the
purpose to force them to act contrary to their own interests at the same time
creating illusion of their free choice” [4, p. 117]. First of all manipulation process is
directed to an emotional component, for example, to such feelings as hostility, joy,

Das Wasser mit Stern. 2500 mg/l wertvolle Mineralien.

[Das ist]
Das Wasser mit Stern. [Es gibt] 2500 mg/l wertvolle Mineralien. Von Natur aus
[ist] hoch und ausgewogen mineralisiert.
Wird
der Magen dir zur Last. Sodbrennen. Magenschmerz. Völlegefühl. Iberogast.
Pflanzlich – Schnell wirksam. [6,
Iberogast.
– beruhigt die Magennerven (успокаивает нервы желудка),
– entspannt die Magenmuskeln (расслабляет мускулы желудка),
– reguliert die Magenbewegung (регулирует деятельность желудка),
Grosse Momente.
Ganz Exklusiv. Hapag-Lioyd. Kreuzfahrten. [5,
Weitere Informationen erhalten Sie in
Reader’s Digest”

Abstract: The article deals with the comprehensive analysis of the ways of expressing
the concept PEOPLE, which is considered to be a constituent of the conceptual space of
discourse of anti-utopia. The research is done within the framework of the anthropocentric,
functional-cognitive linguistic paradigm and is based on the integrated methodology of
cognitive studies. The article explores procedure of the conceptual analysis supported by the
empirical evidence from the English language. The author provides a detailed description of
the ways of expressing the figuratively valuable layer of the linguistic cultural concept
PEOPLE. Peculiar features of linguistic means of the figuratively valuable layer verbalization
of the investigated concept in discourse of anti-utopia have been singled out. The author
shows that the ways of expressing the concept in the English discourse of anti-utopia include
the following lexical means: metaphor, simile, proper nouns, metonymy, and epithets.
Keywords: Discourse of anti-utopia, concept, figuratively valuable layer, conceptual
metaphor, anthropomorphic, zoomorphic metaphor, naturmorphic metaphor.
becoming reacquainted with FEAR” (Hux), temporary state: (5) “He quieted
his panic sufficiently to stop it” (Hux).
The perception of feelings and emotions involves numerous characteristics
of wildlife to represent the person’s emotional sphere. Zoomorphic metaphor is
based on the conceptual metaphor EMOTION – ANIMAL. It is verbalized in the
discourse by means of attracting the nominations of animals and their peculiar
actions: (6) “Each was afraid that to mention such things would be to spread a
poison of fear through the ship” (Lond). Naturmorphic metaphor involves the
perception of the referent – PERSON – in terms of the phenomena of inanimate
nature. For the conceptualization of the concept PEOPLE such correlates as:
NATURAL PHENOMENON, INVIRONMENT, NATURAL OBJECT,
SUBSTANCE are involved. The most common metaphor FEAR –
SUBSTANCE is perceived through such characteristics of physiomorphic nature,
as: temperature: (7) “…cold terrible fear seized me” (Orw); smell: (8) “…there
was a sort of like stiffening and excitement and like the von of fear spreading
from outside the cell” (Burg).
The concept FEAR is perceived as flood destructive forces of nature, it
emphasizes the power of emotion “fear”. Among the concepts of the sphere
ELEMENT, two concepts as WATER and AIR are distinguished: (9) “A hideous
ecstasy of fear seemed to flow through the whole group of people…” (Orw).
The next productive linguistic means of the figuratively valuable layer
representation of the concept PEOPLE is simile. It is manifested with the help of
such concepts as PERSON, NATURAL OBJECT, and ANIMAL WORLD.
The constituent PERSON correlates with physiological characteristics
possessed by people:
(10) “I was filled with fear that can be compared only with seasickness”
(Orw). The concept PEOPLE is represented as inanimate object:
(11) “Montag blinked. Betty was looking at him as if he were a museum

One of the most numerous means of concept PEOPLE representation is
proper nouns. The main function of proper nouns in discourse of anti-utopia is
the depersonalization of human being in the anti-utopian state. In the English
discourse of anti-utopia there is some specific focusing on neuter, leveling males
and females: Alphas, Betas, Deltas, Gammas, the black Semi-Morons, Delta-

Abstract: The article deals with the problem of lingual-cultural code in Modern
Linguistics, the semiotic links between language and culture, verbal expression of historic-
cultural facts. Lingual-cultural code “Clothes” belongs to one of the most important
components of the British concept map. For learners of English, the semantic characteristics
of lexemes and idioms should be accompanied by cultural commentary.
Keywords: Cultural code, social-cultural code, lingual-cultural code, concept map,
lexical-idiomatic field.

Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of the lexical-semantic field of the notion
“fear” in English literature. Having analyzed examples from English fiction the author shows
that the notion “fear” can be expressed in the English language by means of different parts of
speech, phraseologycal units, metaphorical expressions, by means of description.
Keywords: Lexical-semantic field, fear, referent, lexical unit, system.
1. He bound himself together with his will, fused with fear, loathing into a
hatred and stood up (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
2. The air was suddenly pierced by the most fearful roar she had ever
heard. (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
3. It was a fearsome and ghastly sight (J. Conrad “The Inn of the Two
Witches”).
4. The young maiden, being discreet and of good repute would ever avoid
him, because she feared his evil name (C. Doyle “The Hound of Baskervilles”).
Fright и его производные: to frighten, frightful, frightsome, frightening, а
1. A frightening thought came into Sophie’s head (R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
2. You were having a nice fright with him just now (W. Golding “Lord of
Flies”).
3. Then people started getting frightened. I’m frightened myself sometimes
(W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
4. You are looking at a frightsome trogglehumper ( R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
5. The yelling ceased and Samneric lay looking up in quiet terror
(W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
6. The vivid horror of this, so possible and so nakedly terrifying, held them
all in silence (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
7. No wonder you were terrified (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
8. With terrified eyes he peered close under the chin and saw no marks of
strangulation on the throat (J. Conrad “The Inn of the Two Witches”).
1. He felt the horrible rigidity of the body and then coldness of death and
their hands knocked together and their faces came into contact (J.Conrad “The
Inn of the Two Witches”).
2. Bertic actually felt a quiver of horror (D. Lawrence “The Blind Man”).
3. At that point and a new and doubly horrifying thought struck me
(R. Dahl “The Witches”).
4. It looks horrendous (R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
1. Suddenly there I was swinging to and fro upside down. It was terrific. I
loved it (R.Dahl “The Witches”).
2. – It has been a wonderfully warm night, hasn’t it?
123
1. She froze and became absolutely motionless. Every part of her body, her
fingers and hand and arms and head became as stiff as marble statue (R. Dahl
“The Witches”).
2. Both the boys froze. Somebody was climbing towards them from the
tribe (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
3. There are times when something is so frightful you become mesmerized
by it and can’t look away. It was like that now. I was transfixed. I was numbed. I
was magnetized by the sheer horror of this woman’s features (R. Dahl “The
Witches”).
4. He gazed mute and terror struck over come by his own weakness. He
had an unreasonable fear lest the other men would suddenly destroy him
(D. Lawrence “The Blind Man”).
5. Suddenly she froze. She froze to the window-ledge (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
6. He had Jack’s whisper “Scared?”. He not scared so much as paralyzed,
hung up there immovable on the top of a diminishing, moving, mountain
(W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
1. Then she started to tremble. I thought she was going to faint to fall over.
She leaned against the door, staring down at me white faced and shaking all over
(R. Dahl “The Witches”).
2. He was still ghastly pale and trembling in every limb (W. Golding “Lord
of Flies”.
3. Just looking at it give me the shakes all over (R. Dahl “The Witches”).
4. She was trembling like a leaf in the wind and a finger of eyes was
running up and down the length of her spine (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
5. I still get the shivers when I think about it I stayed quivering with fear
began to shake all over. I glanced frantically behind me for a back door to
escape through (R. Dahl “The Witches”).
1. Wretchedly he felt his legs go weak and cold. The perspiration poured
from his face. “I never did!”, – the boy exclaimed turning from grey to white.
His plump flabby face turned grey with fearful apprehension (J. Conrad “The
Inn of the Two Witches”).
2. Нer eyes were stretched so wide that I could see the whiter all around
them. Her face turned even paler than marble. Her face had gone the colour of
the underside of a fish (R. Dahl “The Witches”).
3. He was greyer as never before (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
4. A chill ran down her spine (R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
125
1. She hissed. Her husband wiped his lips nervously with his napkin. She
was quivering like a blancmange. She shrieked still quacking. She cried
something catching her husband round the neck. He was grayer as never before
(R. Dahl “Matilda”).
2. He caught size of the enormous body. He gripped the handles of the wheel
barrow. He swayed. He tottered. Then he kneeled over the grass in a dead faint
(R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
1. It’s not possible to describe what happened next but I became terribly
frightened, more frightened in a way I’ve have never known either before or
after (E.M. Forster “The Story of a Panic”
2. Terror, hot terror, began to play about Byrne’s heart like a tongue of
flames that touches and withdraws before it turns a thing to aches (J. Conrad
“The Inn of the Two Witches”).
3. Complete terror had possession of him now, a nameless terror with had
turned his heart to aches (J. Conrad “The Inn of the Two Witches”).
4. The vivid horror of this so possible and so nakedly terrifying held them
all silent (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
1. He was watching her exceedingly wary eyes and he kept edging farther
and farther away from her. His plump flabby face turned grey with fearful
apprehension (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
2. With a dark horizon gathering around there common hopes, however, that
darkened every hour, the Captain almost felt as if he were a new misfortune
and affliction to her; and was scarcely less afraid of a visit from Florence than
from Mrs. MacStinger herself (Ch. Dickens “Dombey and Son”).
3. Then that terrible silence fell upon us. A fanciful feeling of foreboding
came over us (E.M. Forster “The Story of a Panic”).
4. He paused, half-frightened by the recollection, yet proud of the sensation
he was creating (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
5. Unreasoning terror turning everything to account his old boying
admiration of the athletic Tom, helped to paralyze his facilities, added to despair
(J. Conrad “The Inn of the Two Witches”).
1. Ralph stumbled feeling not pain but panic and the tribe screaming now
like the chief began to advance (William Golding “Lord of Flies”).
2. She was terrified she might sneeze (R. Dahl “The B.F.G.”).
3. At that point a new and doubly horrifying thought struck me (R. Dahl
“The Witches”.
126
4. The things we have tried to forget and put behind us would stir again, and
that sense of fear, of furtive unrest, struggling at length to blind unreasonable
panic – now mercifully stilled thank God – might in some manner become a
living companion (D. Maurier “Rebecca”).
1. And the man as the story goes was so crazed with fear that he could
scarcely speak (C. Doyle “The Hound of Baskervilles”).
2. Ralph screamed a scream of fright, anger and desperation. His legs
straightened, the screams became continuous and foaming. He forgot his
wounds, his hunger and thirst and became fear, hopeless fear on flying feet. He
bound himself together with his will, fused with fear and loathing into a hatred
and stood up. The sow staggered her way ahead of them bleeding and mad, and
the hunters followed, wedded to her in lust, excited by the long chase and the
dropped blood. They suffered untold terrors in the dark and huddled together for
comfort (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
3. In the profound silence of the room he endured a moment of frightful
agony (J.Conrad “The Inn of the Two Witches”).
4. It was true; he shivered as though of an ague. With some kind of spiritual
sense hi seemed to envisage a bleak, a horrible void. The dark night of the soul
engulfed him and he felt strange, primeval terror of he knew not want
(W.S. Maugham “Lord Mountdrago”).
1. There they set quiet, panting, listening to Robert’s frightened snivels
(W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
2. At that point a new and doubly horrifying thought struck me. (R. Dahl
“The Witches”.
3. With terrified eyes peered close under the chin and so no marks of
strangulation on the throat (J. Conrad “The Inn of the Two Witches”).
4. She knocked on the door of the dreaded study (R. Dahl “Matilda”).
5. The Grant High Witch’s dreadful song was over now (R. Dahl “The
Witches”).
dreadful, to appal, appalling, to scare, to startle, to shock, to surprise)
1. Most he was beginning to dread the curtain that might waver in his brain
blacking out the sense of danger, making a simpleton of him. The circle shivered
with dread (W. Golding “Lord of Flies”).
2. I sprang to my feet, my mind paralyzed by dreadful shape which had
sprung out upon us (C. Doyle “The Hound of Baskervilles”).
3. I caught myself up, appalled at my wanton laughter in that place.
(W. Golding “The Pyramid”).

Abstract: The aim is to treat the problem of the communicative status identification for
the item inside the cleft structure and of the right part of the utterance through their prosodic
realization. Besides, we analyze the issue whether the cleft structure necessary introduces
supplementary connotations in the communicative structure of the utterance.
Keywords: Communicative structure, communicative status, marked structure, cleft
structure, rheme, activation degree, nucleus.
2

quelqu’un en /duel après des in/sultes / ‘Гастон Деффер был последним, кто

Abstract: In the article there is a task to investigate the possibilities to optimize the
translation of literary texts through the use of information and computer technologies. The
sequence of translator’s actions during the process of translation is outlined in the article.
Current types of translation with the use of computer technologies are considered together
with the forms of organization of man-and-machine interaction in the process of translation. It
is revealed that any type of translation with the use of computer technologies requires editing
made by a man-translator. The main problems connected with the use of computer
technologies in the translation of literary texts are set out. They are a high degree of imagery
of such texts, the presence of set expressions and idioms, emotional coloring and humor.
Prospects of the development of information technologies in translation activities are
identified.

• педагогический такт и мастерство педагога;

Abstract: The article discusses the issues of mutual interference in the study of a second
foreign language (German) on the basis of English and positive / negative transference at the
phonetic, spelling, grammatical and semantic levels. The use of the knowledge base of the
English language serves as a support for the rapid and effective mastering of identical
structures of the German language, which contributes to the intensification of the educational
process.
Keywords: Interlingual interference, intercultural learning, positive transfer,
intensification of the educational process.

In the following considerations lies the basis for the mental processes and
operations to be externalized in adequate acts of learning: reflected in lexical
meanings are objectively existing objects and phenomena which are independent
of man as well as man's subjective conceptions and feelings; these meanings are
expressed in words (or, rather, in root morphemes), and reflected in grammatical
meanings are the most general relations between objects and phenomena which
have been recognized by man [2].
Fig. 1 shows the basic foreign language teaching requirements which were
established by R. Glaser and J. Lompscher (1982) [3].
The study processes are described from the point of view of experiential
learning theory (ELT) [4]. Some of the assumptions behind this approach are:
- Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the
transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combination of
grasping and transforming experience. The students’ former experiences build
the ground for the new ones.
- Learning involves the acquisition of abstract concepts that can be applied
flexibly in a range of situations. From abstract concepts new implications for
action can be drawn. These implications can be actively tested and serve as
guides in creating new experience as the source of learning and development.
The impetus for the development of new concepts is provided by new
experiences.
- Learning is an interaction and construction process. The ELT model portrays
two dialectically related modes of grasping the experience − Concrete Experience
and Abstract Conceptualization − and two dialectically related modes of
transforming experience − Reflective Observation and Active Experimentation.
The “cognitive card” (Fig. 2) presented to the senses is to prepare students
for linguistic requirements (through the activation and generalization of all
communicative components), for acquiring sociolinguistic norms in the use of:
social strategies (asking questions, cooperating with others; empathizing with
others), metacognitive strategies (centering your learning, arranging and planning
your learning; evaluating your learning), affective strategies (lowering your
anxiety; encouraging yourself; taking your emotional temperature), cognitive
strategies (practicing; receiving and sending messages; analyzing and reasoning;
creating structure and input and output), compensating strategies (guessing
intelligently; overcoming limitations in speaking and writing), memory strategies
(creating mental linkages in schemas and diagrams; applying images and sounds;
reviewing well; employing action). Further on, empathy is acknowledged as an
essential condition of participatory learning.
Depending on the intended use of vocal communication, a distinction can be
made between two principal groups of strategies of communication: information
and activation, resulting from which are problems of communication. Problem
finding as a necessary link appears to provide a basis for explaining anticipation
and the facilitation of participation. Arrangement of partial acts into the overall
strategy is of extreme importance especially for initial instruction.
Psychological-pedagogical conditions for the formation of motivation to
learn consist first of all in the organization of the student’s active actions towards
the object being studied, other persons and himself, including his own
motivation. The method of social goal setting permits the personality to transfer
his personal experience into social one, to correlate the personal and socially
determined goals of the actions in the given social situation.
Specific psychological communication features will determine the unity of
cognitive and motivational components of students' activity: social nature; dialogue-
248
based; reflex, heuristic, emotional, conceptual nature [5]. With the help of these
features the language acquisition is being organized as means of social activities and
self-perfection of the student. There is special system of instructional means for the
purpose of the socio-psychological training of the kind:
1) the instructional method of creating the “value-problem” situation;
2) teaching the solution of the tasks of “social orientation”;
3) the use of planned instructional methods in the work with the “students’
group of reference” and the use of the different forms of collective cognitive
activity;
4) in order to “transfer” the acquired methods of scientific orientation to the
real process of communication of the students, the educational modeling of the
principles of real life situations takes place: preliminary working out of the
content of the object activity “on paper” and acquisition of the orienting material
in the process of performing the corresponding tasks of social orientation.
For effective assessment and monitoring of state changes, measurements
need to be interpreted in terms of criteria of performance so that discrepancies
between desired and attained states can be ascertained. The following is an
example.
ANALYSIS OF SPOKEN DISCOURSES
INTERVIEW GUIDE
1) How comprehensible is my speech?
Usually Rarely Sometimes
-My enunciation is clear, with little slurring.
-My pace of speaking is neither too fast nor too slow.
-My speaking voice is neither too slow nor too soft.
-My tone of voice is warm and engaged.
-I pause at phrase and sentence boundaries, not between words.
-I explain new words/terms through definitions and paraphrasing.
-I provide natural redundancy in my speech by providing more than one
presentation or explanation of an idea.
-I carefully avoid the use of culturally-bound clichés and metaphors.
2) How effectively do I present information and provide feedback?
Usually Rarely Sometimes
-I am knowledgeable about the topic, the purpose, the audience, the whole
design.
-My Introduction stimulates the auditors' attention.
-I announce the topic setting the mood for what is to come, telling them my
beliefs/attitudes, asking for their approval.
-I organize my presentation of the topic in a clear and logical way. Each
paragraph is unified, coherent, and evident, in various styles. Any part serves to
the whole design.
-I explain/repeat the main ideas as many times and in as many different
ways as my listeners need.

Abstract: The article deals with the principles and problems of foreign language testing
at non-linguistic higher institutions. Testing is a component of the learning process and is
considered to be one of the objective and effective means of control of knowledge and skills.
The author analyzes the requirements as well as the advantages of the test control.

part of the project to your class-mates and listen to their critiques and
criticisms [1, с. 174].

Associate Professor, Department of Foreign Languages, Academy of the State

Abstract: The article offers the explanation of different approaches for teaching English
in general and elucidates certain ones for teaching it as a subject to law students.
Interpretation of various viewpoints on this issue was provided and the most suitable
strategies for teaching English to law students were proposed.
Keywords: Approach, strategies for teaching and studying English, wide-angle strategy,
teaching methods for law students, communicative approach, suggestopedia, grammar and
translation approach.
approaches for teaching English in general and for studying Foreign Language
as a subject by law students.
There are a lot of approaches concerning teaching foreign languages as a
whole, but the majority of researchers highlight the following ones:
1. Grammar-translation (focused on grammar). Students translate reading
passages, memorize and apply rules.
2. Task-based learning (a form of communicative language teaching as
communicative activities based on meaningful interaction among learners and
some focus on grammar).
3. Communicative language learning (very close to task-based one, but the
accent is made on story-telling, questions are central focus of the class).
Activities are communicative through the use of authentic materials. Speakers
choose what to say and how to say it, as a rule in small groups.
4. Comprehension (comprehensible input but little interaction, no attention
to grammar).
5. Content-based language teaching (has a subject in the target language
such as immersion, bilingual, or content and Language Integrated Learning
programs) [1; 12].
Moreover, Medo Fatrooq besides these ones stresses:
1. Audio-lingual Method. Vocabulary and structures are represented in
dialogues, learning through imitation and repetition.
2. Direct Method. Teachers use realia, pictures, and pantomime to convey
meaning. Grammar rules are learned inductively.
3. Natural Approach. High interest and low anxiety through use of objects
and actions for teaching words and structures are provided.
4. Total Physical Response. Commands are acted out by students [3].
Also, Gultekin Boran adds here such approach as The Silent Way [1]. He
supposes cognitive psychology to be the basis. Language learning is not habit
formation according to him. It is rule formation. Students induce the rules from
examples and the languages they are exposed to. The main idea of this approach
is from the known to unknown. Besides, the researcher highlights such efficient,
to our point of view, approaches as suggestopedia and community language
learning.
Georgi Lazanov is the Bulgarian psychotherapist and investigator of the first
method. Under this strategy communication is a two-plane process. Language is the
first of the two planes. In the second plane, there are factors, which influence the
linguistic message (the way one dresses, non-verbal behaviors that affect the
linguistic message). As for community language learning the idea is that language
is for communication, for developing creative thinking. The focus shifts from
grammar and sentence formation to a “sharing and belonging between persons”.
Language is what you learn and share with others.
Among the categories in the approaches to studying inventory foreign
researcher Noel Entwistle determines meaning orientation what means deep
321
approach, use of evidence, relating ideas and intrinsic motivation [2]. He also
distinguishes reproducing orientation with surface approach, syllabus-
boundness, fear of failure and improvidence. Moreover, he allots strategic
orientation with its strategic approach, extrinsic and achievement motivation and
non-academic orientation what includes disorganized study methods, negative
attitude and globetrotting. Noel Entwistle has separately accentuated such styles
of learning as comprehension learning and operation one.
Another scientists, such as Dilani Sampath, point out such approaches
which combine the authentic, framework and tailor-made materials; integrate
business skills with simulations; implement Information and Communication
Technology as teaching and learning tools [11].
Except these approaches and methods of teaching English, we can find
such a notable one as interference. It is a concept that was first held by
Newmark (1966) and helps to compare the grammar structure of the foreign
language with that of the native language to discover the problems of the
students in learning foreign language [8].
According to Chamot and O’Malley and Chamot (1990: 198-190), there are
three types of learning strategies. These are meta-cognitive, cognitive and social/
affective ones. The learning strategies used by all students of the low achiever
are metacognitive (self-monitoring and self-management), cognitive (resourcing,
note taking, deduction and inferencing) and socioaffective strategies [9].
In most schools and universities the predominant approach is grammar and
translation [12]. And our Ukrainian Universities are not an exception. This
approach has firmly taken root here. The accent is made on reading and writing
with little attention to listening and speaking. Most of the classes are in sentence
translation from and into the target language. Grammatical rules are presented
and studied. After that students practice through translation excises.
But in our survey we are interested more in papers which are based not
only on methods and strategies for teaching English in general, but those for law
students. So, our attention was drawn into research papers based firstly on this
issue. Their analysis let us distinguish: Task-Based Language Teaching, Course
Evaluation and Rubrics [10].
Content-based instruction at the faculties of law offers advantages over
other approaches, according to Snjezana Husinec [5]. Studying terminology in
the context of the legal system to which it belongs and being able to draw
comparisons with the national systems and terms. It is important to combine
legal language teaching with teaching of the features of the foreign legal system
for the purpose of contextualized learning [5].
Some researchers suppose that it is difficult to teach law students because of
the close interplay of content and language (Gibbons, 1999; Tiersma, 1999) [7].
Besides, there is a wide-angle approach to teach English for Academic
Legal Purposes and a narrow-angled approach. The first one means that courses
focus on common core of skills. The teacher provides general academic skills. A
322
sharing of ideas and practices between English teachers and instructors should
be on the first place to improve English learning strategies and approaches.

Situation: Many companies are reducing the size of the workforce, while at
the same time expecting their employees to provide a high level of customer
care. On the one hand, it reduces costs; on the other hand, it negatively affects
the morale of the team and, as a result, reduces productivity. What is the
contradiction?

Abstract: The article dwells on the advantages of using the case-study technology
within an interactive method of teaching business and professional English. The peculiarities
of the technology application are presented. The author considers the English class
organization based on the case-study method under the theme of "E-Commerce" on the
material of the textbook “Market Leader”.
Keywords: English language, professional competence, interactive method, case-study
technology, problem situation, communicative principle, real language activity.
Some years ago, it expanded into the rest of Europe and now owns 65 stores –
eight of these are megastores. The company is at present going through a
difficult period. Over the last three years, profits have steadily fallen, from
€450m to €290m. The megastores’ sales have risen by 8%, accounting for 55%
of the company’s turnover, but the increased revenue has been achieved only by
heavy expenditure on advertising and promotion. Fierce competition, a narrow
product range and a lack of innovation are some of the reasons for KGV’s poor
performance. The management is concerned, especially, that they are not
exploiting the opportunities offered by selling through the Internet”.
