Deck cadet doesn’t have straight duties as such, but do about the same work as
the seafarer(OS). As a rule cadet works 4 hours on the deck and 4 hours on the
bridge. Mainly he works on the deck helping seamen in mooring operations,
cleaning holds or tanks, cleaning on the bridge, helping assistants to carry
something to somewhere, helping to make an adjustment on charts,etc.
Collective: (Коллективные):
1) Lifeboats (Спасательные шлюпки)
2) Liferafts (Спасательные плоты)
Well, this was for several resasons. Maybe the first from them is that this job
introduce good opportunity for personal growth, for accumulation the initial funds
to open the private businnes in some years. The other reason is more personal it's
regarded to my father, as he is a motorman but he doesn't want me to become an
engineer for different reasons. Somebody think that this job is ungrateful and
unstable, but to my mind if you are purposeful, not lazy and really know your work
you will achieve success in this job.
At first i'm in charge of the master and chief officer and also the boatswain while
working on the deck. I work four-to-four hours on the bridge and last four hours on
the deck. On the navigating bridge i assist the chief officer or OOW with
amendments on some nautical charts or publications, carrying something to
someone and studying the principles of working on the bridge and also the
navigational arrangements. On the deck I take part in such operations as mooring
operations, painting and chiping, cleaning the deck and holds and bunkering. I
think that my primary work on ship is cleaning cargo compartsments and
superstructure and chiping deck. But actually my job on the vessel as a deck cadet
is to practically learn the work on the vessel to use this knowledge in my future job
as a third officer.
At first I have to go to the muster station immediately, and also before that to
take the lifejacket and immersion suit with myself. When I come to the muster
station and know what the type of emergency is, I have to act in accordance with
my duties in muster list and chief officer's orders.
I will yell "Man overboard" at first, to alert everyone who can be near from me,
then I will throw the lifebuoy to person overboard and immediately notify the
bridge about the contingency. After the Duty officer activates general alarm i will
act according to my duties in muster list. Also, if it's possible I have to watch at the
person in water for advising the rescue party.
- A class - the combustion of solid objects like paper, plastic, wood, etc;
- B class- the burning of liquid object and also gases and oils, like spirits,
paints, domestic oils;
- C class - the burning of electrical equipment and other appliances which are
under voltage;
- D class - the combustion of metal objects like aluminum, titan and others
My first ship was a bunker ship and also as a collector, as we carried the
diesel fuel for supplying other vessels and also collected bilges, sewages and
garbage from other ships. I was an apprentice on it and had a working day from
eight o’clock till five o’clock. It was a small ship and has small tonnage and
engine power.My duties on there was cleaning the deck,superstructure,galley,
chiping and painting, assisting to seaman in mooring operations and bunkering.
I often took part in these operations watching the many aspects of them, but as
my vessel was rather small and we always made fast not more than three
mooring ropes or even two(head and stern line) I couldn’t learn much.
On the bridge I learned the principles of working with radio and navigational
equipment while the captain was on it.
As it was the river vessel and rather small size, it didn’t have that radio and
navigational equipment, as a seagoing vessel. But anyway I learned the
principles of working with primary arrangments as VHF,GPS,radar.
