PREFACE

The present collection of papers The Anthropology of Language continues the work of Institute for Human Sciences.1 Our
purpose here stays the same to discuss the problems and perspectives of anthropological linguistics.
The articles in the present collection are evidence to the ongoing search for the concrete principles in the analysis of the human
factor in language, and the study of how language influences the human being. What is special about this issue is that the majority of
works analyzes the human as a subject of consciousness. The different types of such consciousness (social and individual, lingual and
discursive, political and virtualized) demonstrate the integration
of anthropolinguistic, linguistic-cognitive, linguistic-cultural, pragmatic and communicative approaches to the study of the existential
being of the human.
Several of the articles demonstrate how the anthropolinguistic orientation allows for the tracing of changes in the human consciousness through the development of the vocabulary (be it literary or dialectal, scientific or colloquial, religious or common, etc.).
The meaning and significance of the lingual sign in the sphere of the
lingual system, text and discourse occupy a place of particular consideration in the collection. Some of the papers analyze the transformations in the seme and semantic structures of the word, development of new meanings, metaphorization and metonymization as a
reflection of the conceptualization of new experience and expression
of the creativity of human thought, language, and discourse. At the
same time these processes can be interpreted as indicators of positive or negative changes in the structure of human consciousness.
Some authors wrote about the methodic apparatus of the cognitive linguistics as an attempt to understand the complex processes
in the transformation of lingual units from the meaning to sense and
vice versa, and the means for the expression of these transformations. Despite differing points of view on this, many scholars admit
that language systematizes and structures our thinking, and allows
9

for the conceptualization and classification of various objects around

us. The study of lingual units with a cognitive orientation helps us
to define the principles for how the human consciousness identifies
the referent among other objects of the world around, relating in to
this or that category. The emergence of the conceptual sphere of a
people defines specific characters of the semantic space of the very
language. The analysis of conceptual structures that objectify comparative categories in different languages helps us to establish the
universal and the peculiar in the perception and comprehension of
the world by different cultures.
The articles presented in the linguistic-cultural style discuss the
issues of the lingual picture of the world and the issues of the national peculiarities in the lingual reflection of the world. One of the
most important tasks here is the issue of intercultural and interpersonal relations. The texts of different genres are one of the sources
for information on life goals, motives and principles of a human as a
lingual personality; in other words, we can study this way the pragmatic aspect of the lingual personality as a representative of a particular ethnolingual and sociocultural community.
The papers focused on the specifics of speech interaction represent the communicative-pragmatic aspect. Here we can also
trace a junction of various principles in the study of the consciousness of the speech subject (be it the speaker himself, or the speakers partner).
The collection The Anthropology of Language is made of two
parts: Language Human Being and Human Being Language.
The first part includes the papers on the issues of anthropologism
of the language that reflects the processes of human consciousness.
The second part centers on the issues of how language impacts consciousness and human behavior as a lingual personality.
We are thankful to all the authors who submitted their works
for this volume. We invite them and other scholars to participate in
the upcoming issues of the series The Anthropology of Language.

Svetlana Omelchenko

Abstract. In their paper An interconnection of the concepts love and life

as components in the concept-sphere of Christianity, Roza Alimpieva and Nadezhda Pisar make a historical-semantic research of lexemes representing the concepts of love and life on the basis of canonical texts; by this, the specicity of
interaction of these concepts is revealed in a picture of the world of Christianity.

Abstract. In her paper The universal and national-cultural features in
the structure of the concept, Larisa Voronina believes an analysis of the conceptual structures which objectify similar categories in the different languages makes it possible to reveal the universal and the special in perception and
comprehension of the surrounding world by the representatives of different
cultures. Native speaker perceives the concepts of other culture in the light
of a specic national world presentation. That fact determines a possibility of
a wrong interpretation of the meaning, of its associative, imaginative and perceptional components.

Abstract. In her paper From syncretism to scientic thought, Marina
Zhadeyko believes that anthropological linguistics as a new scientic direction
helps us to understand the human evolution, the human thought transformations
through the development of lexical units. Anthropological research of polysemy
shows that the main tendency in the knowledge growth is specialization of the
disciplines. The process of civilization could be viewed as a constant overcoming of semantic syncretism and the development of scientic thinking that results
in the formation of terminological vocabulary and accounts for the new scientic
spheres of knowledge expansion.

Abstract. In their paper Variability of the metaphoric image and its role in
conceptualization of denotatum, Nadezhda Ilyukhina and Natalia Kirillova discuss an experience in interpretation of the metaphoric categorization of knowledge
about speech situation in terms of an image-centric approach based on the concept of a metaphoric image studied through lexical and semantic variation.

1
Abstract. In his paper The lingvoanthropology of discourse, Nikolai Alerenko presents its hermeneutic-phenomenological aspects. This problem is considered in the context of a new linguistic turning-point in philosophy and the
studies of culture. The primary focus of attention is on generating discourse in
the conjunction to comprehension of discursive consciousness and the strategy
of human intentionality.

Abstract. In her paper The comic generated by politician: basic cognitive
processes, Marina Zheltukhina describes basic cognitive processes in the consciousness of politician whose speech realizes the comic. The process of creating of the comic in the German and Russian political consciousness is carried
out by combining of multiple operations on frames. The frame-based transformations are accompanied by violations of the compatibility on the phonological,
morphological, lexical, syntactic levels of language, as well as in the stylistic aspect.

Abstract. In her paper An interpretation of anthropocentrism in contemporary linguistics, Galina Mandrikova considers the causes of the blurred boundaries of an anthropocentric idea in modern linguistic discourse. Such reasons are
above all in the different assessments of anthropocentrism, in a variety of its
interpretations.
