«Have you got a light, Mac?» – «No, but I’ve got a dark brown overcoat.»
– Some people are on seafood diets: they see food – they eat it. There was an eye
doctor who wanted to re-locate but couldn’t find a job because he didn't have
enough contacts.
– A boxer who wants to get married has the ring to worry about.
– If you step onto a plane and recognize a friend of yours named Jack, don't yell
out Hi Jack
1. намеренное высмеивание;
2. мягкое, любящее высмеивание;
3. смех над самим собой;
4. пренебрежительный смех над собой;
5. загадка;
6. головоломка с каламбуром;
7. чистый каламбур;
– Out on its own. A style all its own. Streets veers off the beaten track. Exploring
new trends. Going beyond the norm... Distant. Different. And desirable. Break
away and break the monotony.
– Sylvie was arranging some letters on a board: - E-V-l-L «Now, Bruno» she said,
«what does that spell?»
Bruno looked at it, in solemn silence, for a minute. «I know what it doesn’t
spell!» he said at last.
«That's no good» said Sylvie. «What does it spell?» Bruno took another look at the
mysterious letters «Why, it's «LIVE», backwards!» he exclaimed, (I thought it was,
indeed,)
«How did you manage to see that?» said Sylvie.
– Candy, who was a sweet girl, married Rich, who was a wealthy guy.
– When he lost his wife's shoe he felt like a heel but knew the sole fault was his.
единственный);
– After getting his master's degree, Bob, got a job as a postman, reconciling that
he was still a man of letters.
устойчивого выражения a man of letters – писатель);
What is he?
–A man, of course.
Yes, but what does he do?
– He lives and a man.
Oh quite! but he must work. He must have a job of some sort.
– Why?
Because obviously he is not one of the leisured classes.
– I do not know. He has lots of leisure. And he makes quite beautiful chairs.
There you are then! He's a cabinet maker,
– No no!
Anyhow a carpenter and a joiner.
– Not at all.
But you said so.
–What did I say?
That he made chairs, and was a joiner and carpenter.
– I said he made chairs, but I didn't say he was a carpenter.
All right then, he is just an amateur ?
– Perhaps. Would you say a thrush was a professional flautist, or just an amateur?
I’d say it was just a bird.
– And I say he is just a man.
All right! You always did quibble.
согласие: yes, oh quite, obviously, all right then; несогласие: but, I don't know, no
no, not at all, I didn't say;
What is he? - A man, of course. Yes, but what
does he do? He lives and a man;
You always did quibble.
Janet: ... And so there was a sort of confrontation between Crumble and Splash -
Jane: Catfrontation, you mean. (Laughs.)
Janet: Well, all right, catfrontation, if you insist – and they stood by the –
Peter: Near cat-astrophe, if you ask me. (Groans all round.)
Janet: 1 wasn't asking you, Peter!
Peter: Sorry, 1 didn't mean to be categorical. (More groans all round.)
Jane: This sounds like it's becoming a catanalogue of disasters. (Peals of laughter.)
Peter: I don't think John approves of all this jocularity, when Janet’s trying
to tell us a perfectly serious story.
Jane: You know what John's being, though, don't you.
Janet: What?
Jane: A catalyst! (More laughter all round.)
Peter: I thought that was what happened to moggies when they'd drunk too
much. (Further groans.)
Janet: Oh, that's Christmas-cracker standard.
Peter: Of course, you know what Splash would get if he stayed outside for too
long?
Jane: What?
Susan: Cotarrh. (More laughter all round.)
Janet: Anyway, to get back to the point...
John: Yes, get on with your catechism, Janet. (Mock cheers.)
– While doing my weekly shopping in the local supermarket, the lady on the
intercom system announced: «An assitant to children’s wear, please.» One of my
6-year-old twins looked up at me in great surprise and said: «That lady just said
that children swear – but 1 don’t, do I, Mom?»
– Did you hear about the cannibal who had a wife and ate kids?
от глагола eat (есть) и eight (восемь);
confusible words, malaprops:
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange (Aren't) you going to open the door?
В данном примере сокращённая форма глагола to be «aren't» звучит
морфема имеет значение (covering for the head), то есть откидной головной
– I should have been a country-western singer. After all, I am older than most
western countries.
– Have you heard the one about the man who bought a paper shop?
It blew away.
«Paper shop»
– A cartoon shows a butcher standing in front of his shop, looking with a puzzled
expression at the signs on the two shops on either side of him:
Butch/Butcher/Butchest;
– There are only two kinds of pedestrians - the quick and the dead.
– The Mississippi is the longest river in the USA. Can you spell it?
IT spells i-t.
All eyes on the blackboard and watch me run through it.
– Make up for your life (рекламное объявление).
– Definition of monotony: being married to the same person for the rest of your
life.
– «Would mothers please not sit their babies on the bacon slicer, as we are getting
a little behind with our orders».
INFORMATION BOOTH
– (Pilots in space ship) It’s no good, Dawson! We’re being sucked in by the
sun’s gravitational field and there’s nothing we can do! ... And let me add those
are my sunglasses you are wearing!
– Prince Philip shoots things. He’s the President of the World Wild Life Fund
and he shoots things. «Oh look, there’s a panda, I’ll protect them and then shoot
them dead.»
– She can make you laugh, she can make you cry, she can bring tears to my
eyes, she can bring blood to my shoulders, she can bring the kettle to the boil.
