Course Overview
This course investigates and problematizes inclusive education and disability from a critical
pedagogical and socially just lens to develop students' understanding of the inclusion process
within societies and schools. The students will first learn about the historical context of
disability, the various lenses through which disability has been viewed over the course of time,
and the resulting impact on delivery of services and education for children in Kazakhstan.
Second, students will examine more equitable and inclusive disability theories. All theories are
considered from both international and national contexts. Students will also learn about various
childhood disabilities and evidence-based instuctional strategies and environmental
accomodations used to modify and adapt teaching and learning to promote the development and
education of disabled children in schools and communities.
Readings
A list of required readings will be provided. All readings assigned in the course are mandatory,
except when explicitly indicated that a reading is recommended/suggested. Students will be
assessed for their knowledge of the assigned reading content during in-class interactions,
presentations, as well as in the scope of written assignments. All reading will be made
available on Platonus in the course folder. However, students are encouraged to search for more
sources beyond the required readings, and this will be expected for any assignment. Preferably
google scholar.

Email, what’s app, Platonus will be used to post announcements, coursework submission,
reading assignments, and grades. It is highly recommended checking Platonus, Google
classroom, Yandex drive, email regularly to see if there are any announcements for the class.
ASSIGNMENTS
2. Please use the American Psychological Association (APA) style (6th Edition) when you
acknowledge the source of any material. Marks are deducted when APA format is not
followed.
2. If you cannot complete an assignment by its due date because of severe illness or personal
crisis you must negotiate a new date via email with the instructors before the assignment
deadline, and medical documentation from a physician will be required three business days from
the missed seminar, assignment, exam, etc. Coursework received 10 days or more after the due
date will no longer be accepted. If you have extenuating circumstances that have been requested
to and approved by the GSE, AIU office, these late penalties will not apply, unless the extension
period granted is exceeded. Students are expected to plan their time sensibly and take appropriate
precautions to back-up and safeguard their work. In most cases, computer failures, virus
infections or similar will therefore not be regarded as sufficient excuse for late submission.
3. Academic honesty - Honesty and integrity are integral components of the academic process.
Academic honesty and integrity include a commitment to not engage in or tolerate acts of
falsification, misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty include cheating or
copying, plagiarizing, submitting another person’s work as one’s own, using sources without
citation, facilitating other students’ acts of academic dishonesty, etc. Students are expected to be
honest and ethical at all time in their pursuit of academic goals in accordance with AIU rules.
Sanctions for breaches in academic integrity may range, depending on the severity of the
offence from an “F” grade on an assignment or test to an “F” in the course. Severe cases
and/or repeat offences of academic dishonesty may also result in more severe disciplinary
sanctions up to and including suspension or expulsion.
4. Assignments will be graded and returned with reasonable promptness. Although assignment grades
will be posted on Platonus.
5. Our learning environment is inclusive and should be respectful to people of all backgrounds both
within and outside the class. You should convey respect using non-discriminatory, non-judgmental
language, and through a demonstration of positive, open attitudes.
6. Students are expected to be fully engaged and ready to participate in all class activities. We will have
some small group discussions during lecture time, and students may also be expected to facilitate group
discussions. Students who are disrespectful to peers or to the instructors will be asked to leave the class
for that session. If this behavior continues, other actions will be taken.
7. For all group assignments in this course, students count on each other to be on time for appointments,
keep commitments and contribute to the team effort. An equal contribution by all students on each team
will lead to the most successful outcomes.

Netiquette refers to a set of rules for proper online behavior and applies to tone in student-to-student and
student-to-instructor communications. The guidelines include rules for conduct in discussions, e-mail,
blogs, chats, online rooms, social networking sites and web conferencing. Aspects of communication
content, such as quality, style, and grammar expectations, are also addressed.
Web Conferencing
1. Dress appropriately
2. Stay seated and stay present
3. Keep your camera on except for an emergency or if requested otherwise
4. Be aware of your surroundings
5. Mute your microphone when you’re not talking
6. Speak up
General Rules
1. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Without face-to-face communications, your joke may
be viewed as criticism. When being humorous, use emoticons to express humor, such as a happy
face :-)
2. Address instructor and peers with respect using their names and titles if appropriate.
Individual Communication (e-mail, private messages, instant messaging)
1. Include the following in e-mail messages to the instructor:
a. Course name in the subject line
b. What assignment/s or concerns you are referencing
c. Your first and last name
2. When replying to a message, check the address to be certain it is going to the intended location
(person or group). It is embarrassing if you reply incorrectly and post a personal message to the entire
discussion group that was intended for an individual.
