Summary
Silk fabrics and gold-woven braids are common archaeological finds in Eastern Europe dated to the 11th—13th
centuries. They illustrate trade ties of ancient Rus with foreign countries. Silk fabrics were imported from Byzantium,
Central Asia, Iran and Spain the place of production being determined by the structure of the fabric and the quality of
the silk. It appears that more than 70 percent of the silk fabrics came from Byzantium. They are often found in burials
of common people both in town and countryside which disproves the current opinion that silk fabrics were used
exclusively by the feudal upper strata.
