Good morning students. How are you today? What date is it today? What day of
the week is it today? Are you ready for the lesson?

In the last lesson, we went through the topic of travel and prepositions. We will
continue this topic today. Before starting the lesson, I will divide you into 2
groups. I'll give you the pictures now. It's a puzzle. You need to assemble a
whole picture from these pieces and tell about this city.

Today we will talk about idioms.

Do you know what an idiom is?

Pupils:

Idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that has

a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word
on its own.
Please, open your notebooks and write.

There are a lot of such idioms in English, and we are going to look at some of
them now.

1. Ships in the night

Значение: как в море корабли, люди, которые увиделись на короткий
период и больше не встречались;
 К примеру: We were just ships that pass in the night.

2. Abandon a sinking ship

Значение: «покинуть тонущий корабль»;
Например, Did you expect Tom to abandon a sinking ship first?

3. In the same boat

Значение: в одной лодке, в одинаковом положении или условиях;
Например, Don’t worry, we are all in the same boat.

4. Push the boat out

Значение: развлекаться, веселиться; тратить деньги на развлечения,
празднования;
Например, I really pushed the boat out last Friday.

5. Tourist trap
Значение: «ловушка для туриста». Выражение, знакомое
представителям русскоязычной среды. Оно означает место или
достопримечательность, которая по тем или иным причинам
является популярной среди туристов и неизменно привлекает
миллионы людей.

6. Travel light
Значение: «путешествовать налегке». Ещё одно типичное для
большинства людей выражение, которое используется в отношении
тех, кто предпочитает брать с собой в дорогу минимальное
количество вещей

7. Cover a lot of ground

Значение: «пройти большой путь, многое преодолеть». Туристы,
использующие идиому, могут с её помощью похвастаться большим
опытом путешествий и мест, которые они посетили за свою жизнь. В
ином смысле выражение используется для описания колоссального
жизненного опыта.
