LANGUAGE SKILLS

Nowadays teaching English requires a lot of effect and professional development


on the part of a teacher due to issues of students` demands, interests, motivation and
use of modern technologies in language teaching. So teacher should constantly search
new ways and techniques to conduct highly efficient lessons. Thanks to the progress in
IT and Internet access currently there are many opportunities to conduct researchin
the field of English teaching. Having acquainted with some articles on teaching English
I want to share some thoughts on the latest trends in teaching English.
Learning English for communication purposes is not sufficient today. Concerning
the purpose of teaching English there are several aspects in it. One of them comprises
in itself producing specialists with knowledge of fluent English who use language as
a means of communication or teach it to others. The next one is to view English as a
bridge to learn content such as science, mathematics or other specialty related content.
Content and language integrate learning (CLIL) is an approach where the English
teacher uses cross-curricular content and so the students learn both thecontent and
English.
Learning English from an early age is becoming popular. Many countries have
started teaching English in earlier grades at school. For example, since 2011, Saudi
Arabia and Vietnam have been introducing English from Grade 4. Also in 2011,
Japan introduced English in the primary stage, and, in 2012, Dubai introduced English
in the KG stage instead of Grade 1. Also in our country in kindergartens and more
importantly in earlier grades at school this was integrated in 2013.
Besides improving students` language skills, teaching language includes
familiarizing them with the culture of English speaking countries as well as their
country. It broadens learner`s mind and enables them to compare culture and customs
of different countries.
I think that in classrooms teachers should use literature originally written in English
rather than English translations as students can increase their knowledge through direct
contact with a live language. Regarding the accents, it is enough of a challenge to learn
the language let alone a variety of different English accents. But again it depends upon
the students` needs and preferences. If they consider it important they can practice their
listening and learn to understand different English accents through focusing themselves
on the listening materials taken from various sources.
As technology is developing rapidly, teachers can use a variety of technological
tools in order to make their lessons more engaging and fruitful. There are many
possibilities to acquire and enhance language skills by means of English training
software programs, online language programs and Internet resources. However
teachers also can use television in their lessons instead of textbooks which students
may get bored with from time to time. TV programs focused on language learning,
movies, news, etc. Also, entertainment should always meet a particular educational
goal, i.e., teachers should create some kind of tasks or activities based on TV programs
that can encourage and promote students` learning. One more point that I would like to
mention is that due to the proliferation of tablets and smart phones, there`s possibility
that textbooks may disappear in a few years. Furthermore, the access to knowledge in
terms of flexibility and mobility has changed it. But I suppose that reading traditional
books gives more pleasure to reader than reading electronic books.
Teaching in English language classes aims at encouraging student thinking as
well as language content, outcomes, and learning activities. There are significant and
complex student-teacher interactions inside and outside the classroom. The project
based learning, creating real life situations and interesting ways to deal with them,
games and case study are some of the methods applied in order to make language
learning more engaging and relevant to the younger generation.
In addition to what I mentioned above I`d like to point out that to remain
competitive and employable, teachers are expected to engage in continuous
professional development or professional learning activities from the beginning to the
end of their careers. Teachers should keep learning because there are students who have
been successful in their studies and they want their teachers offer them more up-to-date
training and learning tips. As with any other profession, teachers are also expected to
assume greater responsibility for their own professional learning, continually
developing their knowledge and skills.
