General information
The Data Handbook for Scania Gensets describes Scania Engines current genset product programme. Data
Handbooks are also available for Industrial, Marine and Power Generation Engines.
The paper version of the Data Handbook is normally printed and sent to our subscribers four times a year.
In between you find the latest version as PDF files in the Technical Information Library, TIL, at http://til.scania.com
or via SAIL at http://sail.scania.com.
If you would like to start a subscription of the Data Handbook or just want to get in contact with the Product
Information department at Scania Engines you find the contact details below.
If you find incorrect information in the Data Handbook, you can use the Follow-up Report Administration System,
FRAS, to report it. You can access FRAS at http://distributorfras.scania.com or via SAIL. You can also send an
e-mail to the e-mail address above.
Scania strives to ensure compliance of our products with regard to rules and regulations covering the application
of our products. Given the variation of regulations and the complexity regarding final application of industrial and
marine engines it is of outmost importance that precautions are taken to avoid any violation of local rules and
regulations.
Emission compliance
All gensets are listed with their intended emission compliance. Emission compliance implies that the engine fulfuls
the emission regulation level, however this do not mean that the engine is approved and certified. For detailed
information about approved and certified engines, access SAIL at http://sail.scania.com to view or download the
appropriate certificate.
Power definitions
The gensets have different power ratings depending on the type of service in which the genset will be employed.
Our experience is that most of the power requirements are covered by ESP/Stand-by and
PRP/Prime.
PRP
Prime power
For continuous operation and unlimited yearly operation time at varying load and with a max. mean load factor of
70% of rated power over 24 h of operation. 1/12 h of accumulated peak overload to 110%.
Power definition acc. to ISO 8528.
Power test code: ISO 3046, ISO 8528, DIN 6280 Dauerbetrieb.
ESP
Maximum stand-by power
For operation under normal varying load during a power outage. Not overloadable. Max mean load factor of 70%
of rated power over 24 h of operation. Not for applications intended for more than 200 h/year.
Intended for electrical networks, which under normal conditions, are well established (Europe, North and South
America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Taiwan). For other areas, prime power rating is recommended to be
1
used for stand-by power as well.
Power test code: ISO 3046, DIN 6280 Begr. Dauerbetrieb 300 h/Jahr.
The stand-by genset warranty is valid for gensets in stand-by genset installations for a period of 24 months from
the day the genset was taken into operation, but not beyond 36 months counted from the date the genset was
delivered from factory.
The genset must operate according to ESP power definitions. To be granted 24 months warranty for stand-by
gensets, the gensets must be connected to an ATS and the alternator must be fitted with an anti condensation
heater .
COP
Continuous power
For continuous operation at a constant 80% load of rated PRP for an unlimited number of hours per year.
Reference conditions
When talking about output for a power generation engine, it should be noted that the ‘output’ depends on a number
of physical circumstances which always have influence on the engine performance. The outputs stated in the Data
Handbook have been determined under certain given test conditions according to the international performance
standard ISO 3046. Output and other technical data applies under the following conditions:
Atmospheric conditions
Barometric pressure: 1000 mbar
Air temperature: 25°C
Relative humidity: 30%
Fuel
Energy value: 42 700 kJ/kg
Density: 0.84 kg/dm3
Viscosity: 3.0 cSt at 40°C
For a new engine the brake output delivered may deviate from ‘sold output’ as ISO 3046 permits a tolerance of
±3%.
Output corrections
As we know that the physical circumstances may have considerable effect on the engine output we recommend
that an output calculation is made for each power generation engine. In the output calculation the following must
be considered:
Installation
• Intake underpressure (should not exceed 30 mbar)
• Exhaust back pressure (should not exceed 100 mbar)
Fuel
• Quality
• Temperature
• Density
• Viscosity
Intake air
• Temperature
• Barometric pressure

Engine/generating sets, gensets, are used in many different applications where access to electric power needs to
be secured independent of a power grid.

In applications where the need for power is varying significantly the use of parallel units can be a solution instead
of a single large genset. Synchronisation and load sharing of multiple gensets can be achieved by the use of

Curve 1 applies to all engines at speeds up to 1800 r/min
Curve 2 applies to DI-engines at full speed, 2100 r/min
Curve 3 applies to DC-engines at full speed, 2100 r/min (DC9: 2200 r/min)
Example:
Your engine will operate at 2200 metres above sea level. This means that you must reduce the
output with 10%. If we look at DC12 56A, that engine type has a maximum output of 403 kW
(order ref 10-15A). This means that you cannot make use of more than 403-10% = 363 kW
choosing any engine within the DC12 56A engine type range.
Electric power
The genset converts the mechanical power of the diesel engine into electrical power via the generator. The
generator delivers alternating current. This means that the voltage, U, is constantly shifting from a positive value to
a negative and back to positive again. Normally the periodicity is 50 or 60 Hz corresponding to 1500 or 1800 rpm
of the diesel engine.
Illustration of voltage
Electric power delivered by a generator is described in Voltampere, VA. When the voltage is applied to the
1
windings of an electric motor or a power line there will be a counter voltage induced in the wires. The counter
voltage will make the current lagging in comparison to the voltage. This lagging is expressed as the angle φ.
The electric power can therefore be divided into apparent power that is measured in Voltampere (VA) and reactive
power that is the power consumed for inducing the counter voltage, this power is measured in (VAr). The power
that is not used for magnetisation etc can be used for active work, active power, measured in Watt (W).
The angle between apparent and active power is similar to φ. Cosines φ is named the power factor. In power grids
normally the power factor cosφ=0.8 but it can vary significantly dependent on the various loads connected to the
grid.
Genset sizing
Sizing a genset always requires careful consideration. Many things has to be be considered, for instance the
following:
Load profile
For single or three phase induction motors the starting current can be 5 – 8 times the rated current, thus the
genset must be capable of handling the starting current with a 10-15% drop of speed during a period of maximum
5 seconds. To ensure starting capability of motors, the genset should normally be sized with 10% more than rated
power.
Welding equipment uses electric arcs where the voltage is directly related to the length of the arc, and the current
is related to the amount of heat input. This will cause a big variation in electric load of the generator that must not
disturb other consumers such as illumination. Please consult the supplier of the welding equipment.

Load sharing
The load of each genset will determine its speed. The control system will regulate voltage and speed of each unit,
ensuring a proper load sharing.
Voltage regulation
The voltage of each generator must be kept at the same level. If one generator has higher voltage than another it
will carry the voltage of the complete system. The voltage regulator, AVR/DSR, is a device built into the terminal
box of the generator. It senses the output voltage and regulates the magnetization of the generator in order to
balance the voltage and prevent overload. If necessary the preset values of voltage can be adjusted in the voltage
regulator by an electrician.
Transfer switches
An Automatic Transfer Switch, ATS, is used for standby gensets. The transfer switch consists of measuring devices
for voltage and a switch capable of breaking the rated current of the powered facility.

Power grid
Power grid
The transfer switch will continuously monitor the incoming power from the utility grid. Once the power returns to the
grid, the transfer switch will disconnect the genset and switch back to the utility grid. After a cooling down period
the genset will be shut off.
The process described above will take a few seconds. For applications that requires constant power, like hospitals
and computer centers a battery supply is recommended as a complement to the genset.
The size of the transfer switch, breaking current in amperes, must be equal to the rated current of incoming power
line.
IMPORTANT! All installations of equipment connected to a power grid must be made by a qualified electrician in
order to avoid injuries to people or damages to equipment.
Power consumption
This part will give examples of the sizing of gensets. The sizing of a genset starts with an investigation of the
power needed for the application. If the facility already exists this will be done by an inspection of the switchgear.
Here the rated kVA of the plant can be seen at the marking plate of the transformer or in the documentation,
drawings etc. for the switchgear.
If the plant is in the design stage, an estimation of the required power must be made. Always consider future
requirements for more power in the installation. This is especially important if the genset will be installed in a
building.
In the following text some examples of power requirements are given as guidelines for sizing of both continuous
and standby power supply.
Air conditioning

Ǥૠࢁȉࡵȉඥିࢌ
A 550 kVA genset is needed, including a transfer switch rated 4 kA.
Example 3:
A gravel pit has a conveyer belt of 6 meters length that transports 80 tons/hour to a pile next to the crushing plant.
The conveyer power is 700 kW.
Solution:
The required mechanical power is converted to electrical power.
A safety margin of 20% is added. This gives 875 x 1.2 = 1050 kVA
The customer should use two parallel gensets of 550 kVA prime power.
Example 4:
A mechanical workshop needs power to maintain production despite frequent power shortages. Incoming power
line rated 1 kA, 3-phase.
The workshop has the following data:
Workshop area: 350 m2, no air condition
Four lathes rated 10 kW
One lathe rated 35 kW
Three milling machines rated 7 kW
One drilling machine rated 3 kW
Four arc welding equipment rated 11 kW each
Office with illumination and air condition 60 m2
Solution:
Power for machining equipment. Assume all machines are working simultaneously and a power factor of 0.8.
P = 350 m2 x 20 W (illumination) + 4 x 10 kW (lathes) + 35 kW (large lathe) + 3 x 7 kW (milling machine) + 3 kW
(drilling) + 4 x 11 kW (arc welding) + 60 m2 x (20 W/m2 illumination + 250 W/m2 air condition + 140 W/m2 office
equipment) = 7 kW + 40 kW + 35 kW + 21 kW + 3 kW + 44 kW + 60 x (20+250+140) = 174.6 kW
The customer should use a genset rated 275 kVA standby power and a transfer switch of 1 kA, 3-phase.
Step loads
The speed of a genset engine when load is applied depends on several factors. It is important that the engine
speed can be kept within specified limits since it is proportional to the voltage and electric frequency delivered
by the generator. For engines used in genset application the step load capability is stipulated by ISO 8528-5
‘Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets - Part 5: Generating sets’.
Examples of factors where Scania influences the step load performance are design of turbocharging system,
brake mean effective pressure at rated power and governor behaviour. As the turbocharged engine has a delay
in delivering power, due to time need for charge air pressure build up, the response to load change will have a
short delay. This effect will increase as the degree of turbocharging increases. In the combustion engine the rate of
turbocharging is proportional to the pressure, mean effective pressure (Pme), created in the cylinders during a work
cycle of the engine. This means that the mean effective pressure is proportional to the load applied to the engine.
Other factors that influences the engine characteristics when load is applied:
- Installation of charge air cooler. Routing of the charge air pipes will affect the charge air flow and influence
response time.
- Air and fuel properties. Cold intake air will have a positive effect as well as fuel at low temperature.
- Total inertia of the rotating mass. If the generator diameter is changed or intermediate shafts are added, this will
influence total mass moment of inertia and thus response time.
1
- Characteristics of the voltage regulator. This is set by the generator manufacturer and reflects the electric
response to the load change.
According to ISO 8528-5 there are different performance classes associated with step load. The classes describe
requirements for different parameters that an engine should fulfil. The most important parameters are frequency
deviation, recovery time and voltage drop. Frequency deviation describes how much the frequency is allowed to
drop, utilizing the maximum allowed voltage drop, when the engine is exposed to a sudden load. Recovery time
describes within how long the frequency must have recovered. The table below shows the different parameters for
each performance class.
G1 G2 G3
Frequency deviation < 15% < 10% < 7%
Recovery time < 10 s <5s <3s
Voltage drop -25% -20% -15%
In the Data Handbook for Power Generation Engines step load performances according to class G2 are found in
sections 4-6 for each engine type/order reference. The step load figures indicate how much load the engine can
handle in proportion to sold output - according to class G2.
To see how a Scania engine could handle tougher demands, eg. class G3, the graph below could be useful. The
graph is an excerpt from ISO8528-5, showing ‘Guide values for maximum possible sudden power increases as
a function of brake mean effective pressure, Pme, at declared power’. If the generator fulfils the factors mentioned
above in the best possible way and at normal operating temperature and normal ambient conditions, the Scania
engine will provide step load capability in the range between curves ‘Second’ and ‘Third power stage’, i.e. class
G2.
K = Conversion factor
9-series engine: K = 129.0
13-series engine: K = 94.5
16-series engine: K = 73.1
Ne = rated power in kW
n = rated speed in r/min
Example:
Looking at engine DC13 072A, order ref 02-12 (to be found in the Data Handbook for Power generation engines).
At 1800 rpm the ESP power for this engine is 449 kW. Using the formula above Pme (bar) = K x Ne / n gives:
Inserting the calculated Pme (23.57525) in the graph we can see that this engine (DC13 072A, 02-12, ESP, 1800
rpm) theoretically has the following approximate step load capability, according to the different classes:
G1: 75-100%
G2: 58-75%
G3: 33-58%
According to the Data Handbook for Power generation engines the verified step load capability according to class
G2 for this engine is 72%.

Dimensions on sketches
For all dimensions in sketches the following applies:
• All dimensions are indicated in mm, unless something else is mentioned.
• The sketches show the dimensions at the time of printing.
• The sketches are intended only as general sales information.
• Dimensions are subject to changes from time to time and for that reason the sketches must not be used for any
installation purposes.
• Before dimensioning any installation, the latest issue of the drawing must be ordered from Scania.
• Scania will not take any responsibility for dimensioning made without consulting the correct drawing.
All drawings mentioned in the Data Handbook can be delivered with short notice and will be sent free of charge.
Conversion factors
The list is based on SI units (European standard) with conversion factors to most frequently used units in other
parts of the world. We have tried to limit the conversion factors to max 5 significant digits and in certain cases the
factor is replaced with ‘-’ because the large amount of digits makes the factor useless in calculations.
