machine updates

• Identify the machine features. This presentation discusses the major design features of the 422F2, 427F2, 428F2,
432F2, 434F2, and 444F2 Backhoe Loader. The model shown is the 444F2
machine.

The 422F2-444F2 Backhoe Loaders are a direct replacement for the 422F, 428F,
432F, 434F, and 444F Backhoe Loaders.

TThe 427F2 uses the Cat 3.4B engine rated at 74 hp (55 kw) and meets EPA Tier 4
Final guidelines without the use of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) due to a power rating
of less than 56 kw.. The 428F2, 432F2, 434F2 and 444F2 use the Cat 4.4 engine,
rated at 94 hp (70 kw), 100 hp (74.5 kw or 110 hp (82 kw), that meets EPA Tier 4
Final guidelines using Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR).

NOTE: This ITTP SERV 2033 includes information on the C3.4B only. For
information on the Engine and Support systems for the C4.4 refer to
SERV 2048. For information on the Emissions System for the C4.4 refer to
SERV 1981 module 5 C4.4 SCR Systems Operation.

differences between the F-Series The F2 Backhoe Loaders are nearly identical in design and operation as the
and the F2 machines. previous F-Series Backhoe Loaders.
• Machine Appearance: The appearance of the 422F2-444F2 Backhoe
Loaders have been updated. The larger, flat glass cab is all new, featuring:
improved sealing, increased visibility, and simplified floor plates. The hood and
fender styling has been updated. The front wiper motor is now mounted lower
and the rear wiper is now mounted to the window.
• Operator’s Station: Wide seats with air suspension and heating option
keeps the operator comfortable in all climates. Multi-adjustable pilot backhoe
controls are now offered. A keypad security system is now optional on all
models. A revised instrument display adds functionality and improved clarity.

SERV2033 - 07/14 -10- Introduction

• Engine and Support System: The 427F2 features the C3.4B engine that
meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards, while providing plenty of
power for the utility work. The engine does not need diesel exhaust fluid to
meet the Tier 4 Final standards due to a power rating of less than 56 kw. The
C3.4B can operate on B20 biodiesel fuel that meets ASTM 6751 standards,
which can provide the customer with potentially more fuel savings. The
C4.4 now has SCR emissions control. C4.4 equipped models now feature
engine idle shutdown that automatically shuts the engine off when it has been
idling for more than a specified amount of time. There is also an eco mode
to help the customer manage fuel consumption. Changing to eco mode is
accomplished through the console switch panel
NOTE: For information on the Engine and Support systems for the C4.4
refer to SERV 2048. For information on the Emissions System for the C4.4
refer to SERV 1981 module 5 C4.4 SCR Systems Operation.
• Emissions System: The 427F2 features the C3.4B engine that meets U.S.
EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards using a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which will be discussed in greater detal in
the C3.4B Emissions System module. The 428F2, 432F2, 434F2 and 444F2
feature the C4.4 engine that meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards
using SCR emissions control, information on this system can be found in
SERV 1981 module 5 C4.4 SCR Systems Operation.
• Powertrain: The standard shift four speed transmission has been changed
to the latest generation of manual gearbox design, however, is functionally
identical to the previous F Series backhoe loaders. The auto shift transmission
has been changed from a five speed transmission to a six speed transmission
through powertrain software changes. A lockup torque converter is now
available on auto shift transmissions.
• Electrical System: The electrical system is largely unchanged from the
previous F-Series machines. the fuse panel is now a printed circuit board
design with built in CAT ET diagnostic port. The interior lights are now
controlled via door switch. The rear roading lights are now LED and the radio
is now powered by the key switch.
• Mechanical Implement Hydraulic and Steering System: The mechanical
implement hydraulic and steering system found on the F2 Backhoe loaders
remains unchanged from the previous F Series Backhoe loaders. Hydraulic
line clippings have been improved on the backhoe portion of the machine.
• Pilot Implement Hydraulic and Steering System: The pilot implement
hydraulic and steering system found on the F2 Backhoe loaders remains
unchanged from the previous F-Series Backhoe loaders. The 428F2, 432F2,
434F2 and 444F2 have larger implement pumps to support ECO mode
strategy. The hydraulic line clippings have been improved on the backhoe
portion of the machine
• Maintenance Items: The emissions standards for these machines require the
soot in the catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) be regenerated at certain
intervals. This process can be done automatically or initiated by the operator
using a switch in the operator’s cab on the right console.
-- C4.4 equipped machines require the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level to be
monitored and reservoir refilled as required. A warning lamp indicates low
DEF level.
-- C3.4 and C4.4 equipped machines will have different locations to check
and add engine oil, coolant etc. The filter locations and maintenance
intervals may vary between C3.4 and C4.4 equipped machines.
