This episode will teach you a funny Russian phrase describing regular office workers as well as a few
other cool and useful expressions.

О́фисный планкто́ н – э́ то проду́кт совреме́нности. Люблю́ э́ то выраже́ние, так как

оно́ о́ чень я́ рко характеризу́ет всю многочи́ сленную толпу́ “рядовы́ х ме́неджеров” и
низкоопла́чиваемых о́ фисных слу́жащих. Э́ту социа́льную просло́ йку характеризу́ют
ни́ зкая мотива́ция к рабо́ те, ни́ зкие тво́ рческие спосо́ бности и ни́ зкая зарпла́та. И, как
пра́вило, недово́ льство со́ бственной рабо́ той.

“Office plankton” is a product of our time. I love this expression as it very vividly describes
the entire crowd of “rank-and-file managers” and low-paid office workers. This social layer
is characterized by low motivation to work, low creativity and low salary. And, as a rule,
dissatisfaction with their own work.

Ни о чём зна́чит ниче́м не примеча́тельный, не интере́сный:

“Ни о чём” (about nothing) means nothing remarkable, not interesting:

Э́та рабо́ та ни о чём, я бу́ду иска́ть другу́ю.

This job is of no worth, I’ll look for another one.

Обе́д был ни о чём, я всё ещё голо́ дная.

The dinner was so light, I’m still hungry.

Бли́ жний свет – э́ то “бли́ зко”:

“Closer light” means “close, nearby”:

– Где́ ты живёшь?
– На се́вере го́ рода.
– Да уж, не бли́ жний свет.

– Where do you live?

– In the north of the city.
– Yeah, not the closest light (quite far).

Спроси́ что поле́гче – среди́ хоро́ ших знако́ мых э́ то дово́ льно типи́ чная реа́кция на
вопро́ с, на кото́ рый вы отве́тить не мо́ жете и́ ли затрудня́ етесь. Наприме́р:

“Ask me something simplier” – among good friends, this is a typical reaction to a question
that you can not answer or find difficult to answer. For example:

– А где́ мы мо́ жем доста́ть костю́м ёжика разме́ра XXL?

– Спроси́ что поле́гче.

– And where can we get a hedgehog suit of XXL size?

– Ask me something simplier.

Ещё не́сколько типовы́ х вариа́нтов отве́та:

– А я отку́ да зна́ ю?
– Поня́ тия не име́ю.
– Без поня́ тия.

A few more typical answers:

– How do I know?
– I have no idea.
– No idea.

И напосле́док: чуть ра́нее я сказа́ла спаси́ бо за наво́ дку. Наво́ дка – э́ то подска́зка.

And to finish with: a little earlier said “спасибо за наводку”. “Наводка” is a hint,
suggestion.
