Dogs in the Russian idioms

Such animals as dogs take part in a bunch of Russian expressions and idioms. Today we’ll learn some of
them and little bit more. Join me for the new episode of “Very Much Russian podcast“.

Отку́да пошло́ сего́ дняшнее на́ше выраже́ние где соба́ ка поры́лась я, наве́рное,
расска́зывать не бу́ду, так как ни одна́ из на́йденных мно́ ю ве́рсий не показа́лась мне
“удовлетвори́ тельно убеди́ тельной”. Поэ́ тому мы перейдём сра́зу к су́ти и приме́рам.

I probably will not tell you where our today’s expression is coming from as none of the
versions I found seemed to me “satisfactorily convincing”. Therefore, we will go directly to
the meaning and examples.

На са́мом де́ле выраже́ние звучи́ т по-друго́ му, а и́ менно: где соба́ ка зары́та. А
означа́ет оно́ причи́ ну, моти́ в, по́ вод, суть вопро́ са. Наприме́р:

In fact, the expression sounds differently: “where the dog is buried”. It means “reason,
motive, the essence of the matter”. For example:

Я всё ника́к не могла́ вруби́ ться, как он умудря́ ется так бы́ стро перемеща́ться. А
зна́ете, где соба́ ка зары́та? Ока́зывается, у него́ есть брат-близне́ц!

I could never understand how he manages to travel so fast. Do you know where the
dog was buried? It turns out that he has a twin brother!

Где соба́ ка поры́лась – э́ то уже́ изменённый на́шими совреме́нниками вариа́нт. Был

ли в э́ том скры́ тый смысл, и́ ли про́ сто звуча́ло прико́ льно, не зна́ю. Но тем не ме́нее
фра́за приобрела́ дополни́ тельную окра́ску: где соба́ка поры́ лась, отту́да и воня́ ет.
Т.е. там и есть причи́ на.

“Where the dog has dug” is a changed by our contemporaries version. Whether there was
a hidden meaning in this, or simply sounded cool, I don’t know. But nevertheless the
phrase acquired an additional color: it stinks from where the dog has dug. I.e. the reason is
there.

Практи́ чески иденти́ чный смысл у выраже́ния отку́ да но́ ги расту́ т. Наприме́р:

Almost identical meaning has the expression “from where the legs grow”. For example:

Никто́ не зна́ет, отку́ да у его́ де́нег но́ ги расту́ т. Но тра́тит он о́ чень мно́ го,
гора́здо бо́ льше, чем зараба́тывает.

Nobody knows from where his money’s legs grow (where his money is coming from).
But he spends a lot, much more than he earns.

Дабы́ продли́ ть на́ше сего́ дняшнее обще́ние, предлага́ю ва́шему внима́ю ещё
не́сколько фраз, где в том и́ ли ино́ м ви́ де фигури́ руют соба́ки:

In order to extend our today’s interaction, here are some more phrases where dogs appear
in one form or another:

– Соба́ ку съесть на чём-ли́ бо – т.е. приобрести́ внуши́ тельный о́ пыт в чём-ли́ бо:

– “To eat a dog on something” – i.e. to gain an impressive experience in something:

Он на э́ тих дела́х соба́ ку съел, лу́чше него́ ты специали́ ста не найдёшь.

He ate a dog on these things, you can not find a specialist better than him.

– Наве́шать всех соба́ к – т.е. обвини́ ть кого́ -ли́ бо в чём-ли́ бо…

– “To hang all the dogs (on somebody)” – i.e. to blame somebody for something…

Вы накосячили, а на меня́ и́ з-за вас всех соба́ к наве́шали!

You messed up, but I got all the dogs hung on me!

Накося́ чить зна́чит наде́лать оши́ бок, испо́ ртить что-ли́ бо.

“Накосячить” (to mess up) means to make mistakes, ruin or spoil something.

Та́кже мы говори́ м злой, как соба́ ка и голо́ дный, как соба́ ка. Име́ется ввиду́ как
бы “вы́ сшая сте́пень зло́ сти и́ ли го́ лода, кото́ рую мо́ жет испы́ тывать челове́к”.

We also say “angry like a dog” and “hungry like a dog”. It sort of implies “the highest degree
of anger or hunger that a person can experience”.

А одно́ из мои́ х люби́ мых выраже́ний как соба́ ке пя́ тая нога́ мы уже́ обсужда́ли в
одно́ м из предыду́щих вы́ пусков.

And one of my favorite expressions “like a fifth leg for a dog” we have already discussed in
one of the previous episodes.

Ну вот и всё на сего́ дня. Приве́т ва́шим дома́шним люби́ мцам и домоча́дцам! До
ско́ рой встре́чи!
