In today’s episode of “Very Much Russian podcast” you’ll learn a couple Russian idioms: шаром
покати and полная чаша.

Пыта́ясь найти́ в интерне́те информа́цию о происхожде́нии на́шего сего́ дняшнего

выраже́ния, обнару́жила, что в Пи́ тере есть билья́ рдный клуб с таки́ м назва́нием –
Шаро́ м покати́ . Вот в каки́ е моме́нты всё встаёт с ног на́ голову. 🙂

Trying to find some information on the Internet about the origin of our today’s expression, I
found out that there is a billiard club with this name in St. Petersburg – “Roll a ball”. This is
when things get upside down. 🙂

Почему́? Да потому́, что все насто́ лько привы́ кли к перено́ сному смы́ слу э́ того
выраже́ния, что его́ прямо́ й смысл стал воспринима́ться как не́что необы́ чное. Хотя́ я
счита́ю, что э́ то весьма́ уда́чное назва́ние для билья́ рдного клу́ба.

Why? Well, because everyone is so used to the common meaning of this expression, that
its literal meaning starts being perceived as something unusual. Although I believe that this
is a very good name for a billiard club.

Так что же за смысл у шаро́ м покати́ , к кото́ рому все привы́ кли? Как ни стра́нно,
свя́ зан он в бо́ льшей сте́пени с едо́ й. Дава́йте посмо́ трим приме́ры:

So what is the meaning of “roll a ball”, to which everybody is so used? Strangely enough,
it’s more related to food. Let’s see some examples:

Мы то́ лько что верну́лись из о́ тпуска, так что у нас до́ ма шаро́ м покати́ .

We just returned from vacation, so we can roll a ball at home.

I still remember the times when you could roll a ball on the shelves of the stores.

Чем накорми́ ть семью́, когда́ в до́ ме шаро́ м покати́ ?

What to feed the family, when you can roll a ball in the house?

Шаро́ м покати́ и́ ли хоть шаро́ м покати́ зна́чит “пу́сто”. Ещё мы говори́ м голя́ к (от
сло́ ва “го́ лый”, э́ то жарго́ нный вариа́нт). Почему́-то выраже́ние э́ то употребля́ ется
ча́ще всего́ в конте́ксте проду́ктов пита́ния, хотя́ я нашла́ и други́ е приме́ры:

“Шаром покати” or “хоть шаром покати” means “empty”. We also say “голяк” (from the
word “голый” [naked], this is a slang option). For some reasons, this expression is used
mostly in the context of food, although I found other examples:

Ни одно́ й мы́ сли в голове́, хоть шаро́ м покати́ !

Not a single thought in my head, can roll a ball!

Как противополо́ жность, есть в ру́сском языке́ выраже́ние по́ лная ча́ ша. Его́ ча́сто
испо́ льзуют в пожела́ниях на дни рожде́ния и́ ли подо́ бные пра́здники. Наприме́р:

As an antipode, there is the expression “full cup” in the Russian language. It is often used
in wishes for birthdays or holidays like that. For example:

Пусть бу́дет у вас всегда́ дом – по́ лная ча́ ша!

May you always have a full cup in the house!

Чего́ и вам жела́ю. 🙂 На сего́дня всё, до ско́рой встре́чи!
