Teeth in the Russian idioms

This episode of “Very Much Russian podcast” is dedicated to the teeth… or rather to the Russian
expressions and idioms that use the teeth to convey the idea that has nothing to do with the teeth.

Сего́ дня мы рассмо́ трим одно́ из тех выраже́ний, буква́льное значе́ние и реа́льный
смысл кото́ рых не ка́жутся свя́ занными нико́ им о́ бразом.

Today we’ll have a look at one of those expressions which literal and actual meaning do not
seem to be connected in any way.

Ни в зуб ного́ й зна́чит “ничего́ не понима́ть в чём-ли́ бо”, “быть абсолю́тно

несве́дущим в како́ м-ли́ бо вопро́ се”. Наприме́р:

“Not in one tooth with a foot” means “do not understand anything in something”, “to be
absolutely ignorant in some matter”. For example:

Тяжело́ мне с ним. По-ру́сски он не говори́ т, а я по-англи́ йски ни в зуб ного́ й.

Вот и объясня́ емся зна́ками и зву́ками.

It’s hard for me with him. He does not speak Russian, and I do not understand any
English. We explain ourselves with signs and sounds.

Говоря́ т, выраже́ние э́ то есть изменённый вариа́нт фра́зы, кото́ рая была́ в хо́ ду в 19-м
ве́ке – ни в зуб толкну́ ть не смы́слит, что означа́ло, что челове́к при на́добности
да́же как сле́дует вре́зать по мо́ рде не мо́ жет (в смы́ сле, уда́рить по лицу́, ещё мы
говори́ м наби́ ть мо́ рду).

It’s said that this expression is an altered version of the phrase that was in use in the 19th
century – “ни в зуб толкнуть не смыслит” (~ does not understand how to push the tooth),
which means that a person can not “врезать по морде” even if necessary (meaning punch
somebody in the face, we also say “набить морду”).

Вообще́, с зуба́ми у ру́сских в хо́ ду мно́ жество выраже́ний. Наприме́р:

Actually, Russians use quite a few expressions that mention the teeth. For example:

– “не по зуба́ м“, что зна́чит “сли́ шком сло́ жно”.

– “не по зубам” – which means “too hard”.

Им не по зуба́ м победи́ ть нас.

They are not able to defeat us.

– держа́ ть язы́к за зуба́ ми – когда́ твой язы́ к нахо́ дится за зуба́ми говори́ ть ты не
мо́ жешь; смысл э́ того выраже́ния – “сохраня́ ть та́йну, никому́ ничего́ не
расска́зывать”.

– “keep your tongue behind the teeth” – when your tongue is behind your teeth you can not
speak; the meaning of this expression is “to keep a secret, not to tell anyone anything”.

Е́сли кто-то об э́ том узна́ет, бу́дет о́ чень пло́ хо нам всем. Так что держи́ язы́к за
зуба́ ми!

If someone finds out about this, it will be very bad for all of us. So keep your tongue
behind your teeth!

– точи́ ть зу́ бы – зна́чить “держа́ть на кого́ то оби́ ду и гото́ виться отомсти́ ть”.

– “sharpen the teeth” means “to be unhappy about someone and preparing to take
revenge”.

Он уже́ давно́ на тебя́ зу́ бы то́ чит за то, что ты подсиде́л его́ .

He has been sharpening his teeth on you for a long time already because you took his
job.

Подсиде́ть зна́чит заня́ ть до́ лжность, кото́ рую ли́ бо занима́л друго́ й челове́к, ли́ бо
хоте́л заня́ ть.

“Подсидеть” means to take a job position that another person either occupied or wanted to
take.

Э́то, коне́чно, не по́ лный спи́ сок. Но, всё хорошо́ в ме́ру, поэ́ тому на сего́ дня мы,
наве́рное, зако́ нчим. Всем жела́ю здоро́ вья и береги́ те зу́бы! 🙂
