Swearing in Russian

Today we’ll learn how to swear in Russian. This episode is entirely dedicated to the Russian word хрен
which is commonly used to express a bunch of emotions, from anger to excitement. At the same time, it’s
quite a rude word, so be careful using it (unless you know what you are doing).
Сего́ дня, как я и обеща́ла не́которое вре́мя наза́д, мы бу́дем рассма́тривать сло́ во
хрен. Тща́тельно и со всех стоорон :).
Today, as I promised some time ago, we will take a look at the word “хрен” (horseradish).
Carefully and from all sides :).
The offline version of the podcast includes the episodes in MP3 and PDF formats. The PDF files are available in two
versions: for desktop and mobile devices.
This old sod refused to sign the contract and the deal has burned out.
Also “хрен” is used to express a huge range of things, actions, feelings and conditions. I
should add that in this sense, “хрен” is a purely spoken word, and quite rude at the same
time. Its softer synonym is “фиг”. One more its synonym, even ruder, was mentioned in one
of the previous episodes (those who wish can find it in the footnote [vocabulary] below).
In order not to get lost in the explanations, I will simply give examples and comment on
them.
Хрен вам! – i.e. you’ll get nothing from me, I won’t give you anything.
Ни хрена́ – ничего́ .
“Ни хрена не вижу” means “I see nothing” (“I can’t see a thing”).
Хрен его́ зна́ ет – т.е. “я не зна́ю”. Ча́сто э́ то выраже́ние сокраща́ется про́ сто до “хз”
(хрен зна́ет), как в пи́ сьменной ре́чи, так и в у́стной.
“Хрен его знает” means “I don’t know”. Often this expression is reduced simply to “хз”
(хрен знает), both in writing and speaking.
– How is he doing?
– God knows, he has not called me for a while.
Какого хрена ты это сделал? – Why the heck did you do that?
“На хрена? На кой хрен? На хрен?”. All these questions mean “why?”
Ни хрена́ себе́! – то же са́мое что Ничего́ себе́!, то́ лько бо́ лее гру́бо.
Мои́ пре́дки то́ лько и де́лают, что у́чат жить. А вот что́ бы реа́льно поня́ ть и помо́ чь
– хрен там был.
My parents do one thing always – teach me how to live. But to really understand and
help – never happens.
Хрен с тобо́ й / с ва́ ми / с ним и т.д. зна́чит “ла́дно, пусть бу́дет как есть и́ ли как
вы хоти́ те”.
“Хрен с тобой / с вами / с ним” etc. means “ok, let it be as it is or as you want”.
Ла́дно, хрен с ва́ ми. Сде́лаю как вы про́ сите… Но э́ то в после́дний раз!
Okay, to hell with you! I’ll do as you ask… But this is the last time!
Иди́ те на хрен! – то же са́мое, что иди́ те в ба́ ню, к чёрту и так да́лее. Выраже́ние
испо́ льзуется, что́ бы “посла́ть” челове́ка.
“Идите на хрен!” – same as “идите в баню”, “к чёрту” etc. The expression is used to send
somebody off (to hell etc).
And this is far from complete. From the word “хрен” we derive adjectives, verbs and
adverbs. But we will have a look at them next time.
За сим проща́юсь, вам отли́ чной рабо́ чей неде́ли и хоро́ шего настрое́ния!
On this I say goodbye, wish you to have a great working week and be in a good mood!

Совершенно не нужно плодить кучу тем. Достаточно было написать что хрен это
смягченное х*й.
