1.14. неестественное языковое наполнение;
ких структур;
ями;
1.17. примитивность содержания;
ГЛАВА I МЕТОДИЧЕСКАЯ
- Lemonade for me. It's too hot for tea! (Lampater P.,
Hellyer-Jones R. Learning English - Green Line. - Stuttgart,
1985.)
(I had sausages last time, so today
I'm going to have beans on toast. I'll have lemonade because it's
too hot for tea.)
1.41. разделительные (sausages or beans on toast? tea or lemo-
nade?)
(I'd like; would you like?).
"My Room", "Mother's Birthday", etc.).
ные модели: заголовки-вопросы ("Why Are Some Countries Colder
ки, являющиеся своего рода загадкой ("The Good Old Days?").
"Project English".- Oxford:
OUP, 1993).
- 33 -
a lazybones - лентяй
a killjoy - нытик, брюзга
from the horse's mouth - из первых уст
to talk through one's hat - болтать чепуху
That's another pair of shoes. -
Устойчивые выражения (the nearest and dearest), звукоподра-
жания ("Bow-wow-wow!"says the dog. "Pe-pe-pe!" say the birds.),
восклицания (Oh! Wow! Yuk!), заполнители пауз (well, m-m-m, you
- I don't think he will
come.

Sandra, Susan, Amanda,
Robbie (Robert), Steve, Tony (Antony)
E.g. My Dad came home from work. "Stop that noise," he said
to Lennox. "Lissie," he said, "I want my tea. I'm a working man.
- 50 -
I want three fried eggs. I've been working all day for the lot of
you." "Working all day?" said Mum. "What about all those tea-bre-
aks? You have at least two every hour."
What car model have you
got?"
том, что "How old are you?"
How many meals a day do you have?
What do you usually eat for breakfast? When do you usually get

MY CHILDHOOD
I have a very clear earliest memory. I, the first born, was
three and a half and my mother was expecting another child. I
was constantly asking God to send me a new brother or sister.
The "me" was important because I loved receiving presents. I was
furious when the baby arrived, because all the attention moved
from me to this small, red-faced thing in a cot. It was a great
disappointment to me. I had been praying for this moment and now
here was a "thing" which kept on crying with everybody saying
how beautiful it was. "Honestly", I said, "I would have
preferred a rabbit!"

get her a doctor?" I asked with great concern.
"Ah, no," he said, "I think a lot of that could be right."
I thought to myself, isn't he a wonderfully loyal man!
I went to my first dance when I was 17. [6] I wore a blue
dress that my cousin had lent me, with a big blue velvet band set
down the middle of the dress to let it out. I wore earrings which
had made sores in my ears when і was rehearsing for the dance, so
I had put sticking plaster on my ears and painted it blue to
match the dress. I must have looked absolutely horrific.
Nobody - not one single person - danced with me that night.
[7] There weren't many dark passages in my childhood but that
most definitely was one.

surname, Alexander is my first name and Sergeyevich is my
patronymic. [1]
At the moment I am a first-year student at the University.

My brother, whose name is Michael, is eight years my senior.
He is twenty-seven already. He is a builder. He is married and
has a family of his own. [3] He has a wife and two children - a
son and a daughter. They are twins. They are lovely little
children with golden hair and dark-blue eyes. [4] His wife's name
is Nina. She is a surgeon by profession. They are not in
Leningrad. [5]
My parents are not old at all. [6] My grandparents are
already pensioners but they are still full of life and energy.

(I see. Oh! Yes, I can Imagine. The same with me.
Absolutely! Right. That's a good example. That's a sad story. A
happy end. Oh, that's a surprise for me! Yes, that was a scaring
episode. Yes, I remember that! You are lucky. Yes, that's fun. So
do I), активное участие в разговоре, дополнительные вопросы (Do
you have to do a lot for your little brothers? Did the boy you
loved pay any attention to you? Do you still see him? Did you two
study together? Did you believe in Santa Clause? Why were you so
impressed?), обобщающие фразы (So your first teacher is one of
the most horrible impressions of your childhood. Parents always
care about their children even if they make a lot of trouble, be-
cause it's their duty, though not everyone feels like that. So
you think she is sociable, open-hearted, kind, cheerful.).

- It's better to live in the Hall of Residence. There are a
lot of young people there, you will have many friends.
- You can do what you want, you will be independent.
- I think it's great fun.
- You will never feel lonely in the Hall of Residence.
- It's very good if you have a good room-mate.
- As far as I know, Hall of Residence is cheaper.
- I don't want to live in a host family. You don't know what
the family is like. Maybe they are not friendly, or they don't
like you.
- When you live in somebody's house, you have to obey him,
because he is the master.
- 134 -
rents again after you have lived alone for a year. Parents always
think you are a baby. I think studying abroad Is a good chance to
become Independent.
- My parents take it easy. It's not that they don't care,
but they have other things to think about, and they think I can
take care of myself. But of course they would be very worried
about me.
- My mother always imagines different horrible things that
can happen to me. And she won't be able to controle me if I go to
America, so I think she will lose her sleep.

I started taking in students seven years ago when my
husband left me and I needed money. I took in foreign
students from language schools. Of course it was not always
easy. Some of them used to come home at 3 a.m. , leave their
dirty dishes on the kitchen table, speak over the phone for
hours, bring guests and make noise. And you know, they all
come form different countries and have different habits. For
example, the girls I had last year were from a hot country
and were used to washing their clothes after one wearing, so
they kept the washing-machine busy. But usually my lodgers
and I become friends, and they even look after my children
when I'm out. I think taking in people is a very good way
of making serious money at home. I share my home with
people I like and get 350 pounds every month. Isn't that

Andrew: I can't work day and night, Mom. You know, I
met a very nice girl at the disco. We are going to eat pizza
tonight.
Mrs Rice: Oh, my God! A girl! You should think more
about your studies! And you mustn't eat pizza! It's bad
for your health! Do you hear me, Andrew? You must do as I
tell you!
Andrew: Mom, I am a grown-up! I can do what I want!

III. Intensive listening
Listen to the text again, try to remember the details
and be ready to fulfil an exercise.
IV. Post-listening-
Now read the same dialogue. There are some mistakes in
it. Check your memory: how many will you find? Correct the
mistakes.
Mrs Rice: Hello... Andrew? Is that you, baby?
Andrew: Yes, Mom.
Mrs Rice: Oh, hello, dear, how are you?
Andrew: Just awful, Mom, don't worry.
Mrs Rice: Are you enjoying yourself?
Andrew: Oh, yes. I have made a lot of new mistakes. . .
Mrs Rice: Do they smoke, baby? Remember, you mustn't
smoke.
Andrew: They are really stupid guys, Mom.
Mrs Rice: And you mustn't eat.
Andrew: Mom! I'm too busy to eat! I have to work
hard. I'm going to read my poem at the seminar tomorrow.
Mrs Rice: I'm sure your cat will be delighted!
Andrew: Well, I'm not so sure.
Mrs Rice: Do you feel homesick, my poor one? Africa
is so far away!
Andrew: I'm fine here, Mom. There are a lot of things
to do and a lot of different clubs I can join. I think I
will join a singing club.
Mrs Rice: Oh, you shouldn't do that! You can break your
cup!
Andrew: Come on, Mom, I'll be careful. And yesterday I
went to a lecture.
Mrs Rice: You did?! You shouldn't do that, baby. Don't
waste your time. You can become a pop-singer if you work
hard.
Andrew: I can't work day and night, Mom. You know, I
met a very nice tutor at the lecture. We are going to eat
pizza tonight.
Mrs Rice: Oh, my God! A tutor! You should think more
about your studies! And you mustn't eat pizza! It's bad
for your eyes! Do you hear me, Andrew? You must do as I
tell you!
Andrew: Mom, I am a grown-up! I can do what I want!

VII. Pre-reading.
When a student enters the University, he is
called "a fresher". A fresher's life can be very exciting
for the first week, because all the clubs and societies try
to persuade freshers to join them, they have a "freshers'
fair". There are lots of clubs, so the choice can be a
bit hard. What club would you like to join?
VTTT. Tending.
