Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness
and safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as
a matter of course, be observed.

1.1 General Safety Precautions

To avoid personal injury and damage to the vehicle, note the
following:

WARNING

Risk of injury and accident by accidentally engaging a selec‐

tor lever position with the engine running.
♦ Move the selector lever into “P” and pull the parking
brake lever before working with the engine running.

1.2 Tow Starting and Towing Information

Caution

Risk of destroying the transmission.

♦ When towing the vehicle, move the selector lever to “N”.
Do not tow the vehicle farther than 50 km and do not
drive faster than 50 km/h.

Note

It is not possible to tow-start the engine.

3.1 General Repair Information

The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that
function properly are required to ensure a proper and success‐
ful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions
also apply when carrying out repairs.
General information that applies to various different repair pro‐
cedures is listed here instead of repeating it multiple times
throughout the manual. They apply to this repair manual.
Tools
A complete list of special tools and workshop equipment used in
the repair manual can be found at the beginning of each repair
section and in the “Special Tools and Workshop Equipment”
folder.
Uncertainties often exist on smaller screws with lower tightening
specifications. For these bolts the -VAG1783- can be used.

Transmission
♦ Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the trans‐
mission fluid pan is removed or if there is no transmission
fluid inside the transmission.
♦ Thoroughly clean the connection points and the area around
them first, and then loosen them.
♦ When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment
sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the
transmission.
♦ Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them
so that they do not become contaminated. Use foil and pa‐
per. Only use lint-free cloths.
♦ Only install clean parts: remove the replacement parts from
their packaging just before installing them.
♦ Carefully cover or seal opened components if repairs are not
performed immediately.
♦ When the transmission is removed, secure the torque con‐
verter so that it cannot fall out.
♦ After installing, check the ATF level and fill. Refer to ⇒
D2.2 raining and Filling”, page 34 .

Guided Fault Finding, OBD and Test Instruments

Before beginning any repair work on the automatic transmis‐

sion, determine the cause of the damage using “Guided Fault
Finding”.
Perform Guided Fault Finding using, for example the Vehi‐
cle Diagnostic Tester.

3.2 Seals and Gaskets

O-rings, Seals, Gaskets and Oil
♦ Always replace the O-rings, gaskets and seals.
♦ After removing gaskets and seals, examine the contact sur‐
face on housing or shaft for burrs resulting from removal or
for other signs of damage.
♦ Coat the O-rings with ATF before inserting to prevent the
rings from being crushed during assembly.
♦ Only use ATF. Other lubricants cause malfunctions in the
hydraulic transmission control.
♦ Lightly coat the seals with ATF along the outer circumfer‐
ence and on the sealing lip -arrow-.

♦ The open side of the seals faces the oil.

3.3 Bolts and Nuts

♦ Loosen and tighten the bolts and nuts on the covers or hous‐
ings in a diagonal sequence.
♦ The tightening specifications given, apply to un-oiled bolts
and nuts.
♦ Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts that were
installed with locking fluid. Install the bolts with Locking Fluid
-AMV 185 101 A1-.
♦ The threaded holes in which the self-locking bolts or bolts
coated with locking fluid were installed must be cleaned (for
example, with a thread tap). Otherwise there is the risk that
the bolts could break off when they are removed again.
♦ Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.

– Secure the torque converter using wire -A-, for example, to

prevent it from falling when being transported.
Unsecured torque converters can slide out if the transmission is
tipped.

1.2 Torque Converter, Removing and In‐

stalling
Removing
– Remove the transmission. Refer to ⇒ R3 emoving and In‐
stalling”, page 38 .

Note

Place a clean cloth under the torque converter to catch the

escaping ATF.

– Remove the torque converter forward from the transmission

and place it on a soft surface with the opening facing up‐
ward.
Installing
– Carefully push the torque converter hub through the seal
until the first stop.
– Push in the torque converter with light pressure to the trans‐
mission. The torque converter noticeably slides inside.
The torque converter is installed correctly when it can be easily
turned by hand and rests evenly in the transmission along its
entire circumference.

Caution

If the engine and transmission are forcefully connected when

the torque converter is installed incorrectly, there will be
damage to the transmission and torque converter.

Note the following points when installing the transmission.

Caution

Before and during fastening the engine/transmission flange

bolts, check that the torque converter can still be turned be‐
hind the drive plate. If the torque converter cannot be turned,
it must be assumed that it has not been inserted properly
and that the coupling plate of the torque converter or the ATF
pump will be destroyed during final tightening of the bolts.

Even if the level of transmission fluid is too low, first a small

amount of transmission fluid will flow out of the overflow tube,
because it fills during operation.

ATF flows out of the overflow pipe.

– Let the excess fluid drain.

– Install the drain plug with a new gasket as soon as all the
fluid has drained out (it starts to drip).
– If no transmission fluid comes out, then fill.

Caution

Too little or too much fluid will impair the function of the

Starter must not be able to be operated in selector lever posi‐
tions “R”, “D”, “S” and in tiptronic position.
Over 5 km/h (3.11 mph)
The shift lock solenoid must not block the selector lever when
the selector lever is moved to the “N” position. The selector
lever can be moved back again into another driving position.
Below 5 km/h (3.11 mph)
If the selector lever is moved into the “N” position, the shift lock
solenoid may block the selector lever after approximately one
second. The selector lever can only be moved out of “N” when
the brake pedal is pressed.
Selector Lever in “P” and Ignition Switched On
• If the brake pedal is not pressed:
The selector lever is locked and cannot be moved out of “P”
when the button is pressed. The shift lock solenoid blocks the
selector lever.
• If the brake pedal is not pressed:
The shift lock solenoid releases the selector lever. It is possible
to select a gear. Shift the selector lever slowly through from “P”
to “S”; while doing this, check whether the display of selector
lever position in instrument panel insert matches actual selector
lever position.

8.8 Selector Lever Cable, Checking and

Adjusting
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm -VAG1331-
Brief Description
To check the selector lever cable for ease of movement, re‐
move it from the transmission and position the removed end so
it does not make contact anywhere.
The selector lever is then moved and then the selector lever
cable is re-attached.
After that, the selector lever cable must be adjusted. Refer to ⇒
page 101 .
Do not grease the selector lever cable connection.
Checking
– Move the selector lever to »P«.
– Loosen the adjusting screw -arrow- on the selector lever
cable -1-.

– Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector lever -2-, for
example, using a wrench.

were installed without tension.
Adjusting:
– Move the selector lever into “P” position.
The adjusting screw -arrow- must be »loosened«.

– Move the selector lever -2- on the transmission into “P”

(push the gearshift lever toward the rear).

WARNING

The parking lock must be engaged.

– From »underneath the vehicle«, rotate both front wheels in

the same direction and at the same time until the parking
lock engages audibly.
• The parking lock is engaged when it is not possible to rotate
both front wheels in the same direction at the same time.
