Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness
and safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as
a matter of course, be observed.

Transmission
♦ Do not run the engine and do not tow the vehicle if the trans‐
mission fluid pan is removed or if there is no transmission
fluid inside the transmission.
♦ Thoroughly clean the connection points and the area around
them first, and then loosen them.
♦ When installing the transmission, make sure the alignment
sleeves are seated correctly between the engine and the
transmission.
♦ Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover them
so that they do not become contaminated. Use foil and pa‐
per. Only use lint-free cloths.
♦ Only install clean parts: remove the replacement parts from
their packaging just before installing them.
♦ Carefully cover or seal opened components if repairs are not
performed immediately.
♦ When the transmission is removed, secure the torque con‐
verter so that it cannot fall out.
♦ After installing, check the ATF level and fill. Refer to ⇒
D2.2 raining and Filling”, page 34 .

♦ Loosen and tighten the bolts and nuts on the covers or hous‐
ings in a diagonal sequence.
♦ The tightening specifications given, apply to un-oiled bolts
and nuts.
♦ Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the bolts that were
installed with locking fluid. Install the bolts with Locking Fluid
-AMV 185 101 A1-.
♦ The threaded holes in which the self-locking bolts or bolts
coated with locking fluid were installed must be cleaned (for
example, with a thread tap). Otherwise there is the risk that
the bolts could break off when they are removed again.
♦ Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.

WARNING
– Perform road test and at the same time the ATF temperature
must reach at least 90 °C (194 °F) to bleed the ATF circuit.
When the air leaves the ATF circuit, the ATF level in the trans‐
mission decreases. Therefore, the ATF level must be checked
again later after the fluid cools.
– Let the ATF cool down to 30° C (86 °F)).
– Check the ATF level again. Refer to ⇒ page 32 .
