"Meet my sister, Katya."
sestra.

GRAMMAR
The Focus of This Lesson is Saying "I have…," "Do you have…," "older sister," "younger brother,"
Conjugating "to live," and Pronouns
Да, у меня есть старшая сестра и младший брат.
"Yes, I have an older sister and a younger brother."
у тебя есть (u tebya yest') is the informal way of asking "do you have?" To make it sound more formal or
polite, all we have to do is replace the informal "you" with the formal one: у Вас есть? (U Vas yest'?)
For Example:
For Example:
старшая сестра and младший брат ("an older sister,") and ("a younger brother")
старшая сестра (starshaya sestra - "an older sister") and младший брат (mladshiy brat - "a
younger brother")
The words "sister" and "brother" have feminine and masculine genders respectively. The adjectives in
Russian language have to correspond to the genders of the nouns; therefore, we also place the words
"older" and "younger" into the feminine and masculine genders.
If the age difference between you and your siblings is opposite to Ben's (i.e., you have an older brother
and a younger sister), the endings of the adjectives will alter a little according to the genders.
For Example:
As you can see, we have a pattern here. The adjectives that go together with masculine nouns have the
endings ий, and with feminine – ая.
We already know that nouns in Russian have genders and number. Adjectives have to correspond with
nouns in both categories. Now, to the verbs. We modify present tense verbs in Russian according to
person. Let's take the verb from our dialogue and see some of the conjugation patterns they form.
Семья (sem'ya) - "family" has feminine gender in Russian; therefore, it conjugates as "she."
Russian pronouns may seem quite complicated at first, as they take many different forms according to
their function in a sentence. Let's take a general look at them.
In this lesson, we came across personal pronouns ("I," "you," "he," etc.), and possessive pronouns ("my,"
"your," etc.). Here are the personal pronouns in Russian language:
Personal Pronouns
Я ya "I"
Он on "he"
Мы my "we"
Possessive Pronouns
Possessive pronouns will be paid much closer attention in the following lessons, and here we'll just take
a look at the pronouns "my" and "your." In Russian, we have to take into consideration the gender of the
object that goes after a pronoun. For example, in the phrases "my bag," "my phone," and "my keys," the
pronoun "my" will sound different in each case, as "bag" is feminine, "phone" is masculine, and "keys" is
plural.
Let's take a look at the examples. The possessive pronouns "my" and "your" with masculine, feminine,
and plural nouns:
Masculine
1. мой брат
moi brat
"my brother"
2. твой телефон
tvoi telefon
"your phone"
Feminine
1. моя сестра
moya sestra
Plural
1. мои родители
moi roditeli
"my parents"
2. твои деньги
tvoi den'gi
"your money"
CULTURAL INSIGHT
Russian Housing Hard to Come By
Russians are very attached to their families. It's not common for a typical Russian family to be scattered
around the country, let alone around the world.
During the USSR era, one couldn't buy an apartment, he/she could only "receive" it from the state. The
apartments were given to people for free, according to the time they worked on the enterprise.
Sometimes people would wait for their private flat for ten to twenty years, living in communal
apartments with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Living together with parents and/or children was also
very common, which created lots of conflicts, but also made Russians considerate and ready to
compromise.
Nowadays, buying or renting apartments has become legally possible, but not very affordable.
Therefore, a lot of people still live with their parents even when they are already married.
