ENGLISH
2. Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin was a Russian composer and pianist, one of the
leading representatives of the music culture in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. His
works were represented by symphonic and piano works, and the nature of his music was
dominated by the heroic pathos, fiery expression, the heat of expressed feelings, and
sometimes even nervousness and impulsivity.
3. Scriabin was born on January 6, 1872 to an intelligent family and had all the
prerequisites for a deep music and cultural education. According to the traditions of his
time, he was first put to study with the cadet corps but after his graduation Scriabin
entered the Moscow Conservatory for piano and composition class where he studied the
same year with Rachmaninoff.
4. Scriabin was married twice (the last time unofficially) and had seven children from both
wives; he lived abroad for a long time earning a living by performing his own works. He
gave concerts in France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and America.

5. For some time Scriabin taught at the Moscow Conservatory but considered it to be just a
way of insignificant earnings, which mostly just distracted him from composing.
6. The early 20th century brought revolutionary changes to the political and social life of
Russia. The most vivid reflection of those changes is found in the music of Scriabin. He
believed in the educational power of art and treated his works almost as a new religion
and saw himself as a messiah. His works seethed with rebellious themes, his harmonies
were bold and fiery, and his audience was divided into the enthusiastic fans and rabid
haters.
7. Militant and fierce optimism of Scriabin's works caused outrage among the musical
authority, headed by Rimsky-Korsakov. However, it didn't confuse Scriabin and he
remained faithful to his style for the rest of his life. Symphonic masterpieces "Poem of
Ecstasy" and "Prometheus - Poem of Fire" embodied the idea of spiritual ecstasy, striving
to cosmic forces and unknown energy spheres of the universe. The apogee of his works
in this direction was supposed to be the work "Mystery," combining all the arts—from
poetry and dance to architecture. Unfortunately, the plan did not live up to
implementation. In 1917, on the lip of the composer appeared a malignant abscess,
which led to blood poisoning and the swift death of the great musical innovator.

Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin represents a separate page in the history of the Silver Age
of the Russian culture. A music critic, Asafiev, wrote "Scriabin's music is a deeply humane
irrepressible desire for freedom, happiness, and enjoyment of life."
Scriabin was very emotional, romantic, and charming, but at the same time, an arrogant and
overconfident person. He had absolutely no interest in contemporary composers; he drew his
ideas from philosophical theories, including the philosophy of Elena Blavatskaya, the first
"spark" for the "Mystery."
Scriabin was also characterized by suspiciousness and suffered from filth-dread (fear of
germs). Ironically, the composer died from a minor infection (carbuncle on his lip).
