CULTURAL INSIGHT
All his life Repin worked very passionately and intensely, having left behind a very rich
legacy. He worked with such an overload that in the middle of his life his right hand began to
ache, dry up, and then just stopped functioning at all. By the end of his life he was painting
only with his left hand. One of his most striking paintings is "Ivan the Terrible and his son
Ivan." The painting shows the tsar who killed his son with a hit on his temple with a sceptre.
Having realized the tragedy of the situation, the father hugs his son, trying to close the
bleeding wound, his face is in terrible grief, and the face of the prince radiates peace of a
dying man. According to one of the mystical versions, Repin's hand started hurting
immediately after he finished this painting that depicted the fact that supposedly did not exist
in history. The fact of murder of the tsar's son actually did take place, but there is evidence that
the prince died a week after the tsar hit him with a sceptre; in addition, there could not
possibly be so much blood as it is shown in the picture.
