Strong, fixed and weak collocations

Inclement weather was expected. Ожидалась ненастная погода.

(very formal) = unpleasant weather
Inclement collocates almost exclusively with weather.

She has auburn hair. У нее каштановые волосы.

Auburn collocates only with words connected with hair (e.g. curls,
tresses, locks).

I felt deliriously happy.

= extremely happy
Я чувствовал себя безумно счастливым. Strongly associated with happy. Not used with glad, content, sad,
etc.

The chairperson adjourned the meeting.

Председатель объявил перерыв в заседании. = have a pause or rest during a meeting/trial
Adjourn is very strongly associated with meeting and trial.

Possible example sentences:

Strong collocations
A strong collocation is one in which the words are very closely associated with each other.
Fixed collocations
Fixed collocations are collocations so strong that they cannot be changed in any way.
Weak collocations
Weak collocations are made up of words that collocate with a wide range of other words.

adjourn откладывать - to adjourn a meeting till the following week . заседа́ние до сле́дующей неде́ли 
auburn темно-рыжий She shook her mane of auburn hair. He had a mane (грива)of auburn hair
broad широкий
deliriously безумно Her answer made him deliriously happy. Ее ответ сделал его безумно счастливым.
inclement ненастный- Predictions of inclement weather proved to be wrong. Прогнозы непогоды оказались
ошибочными The inclement weather brought forth a host of diseases. Ненастная погода породила множество болезней.
mitigating смягчение. There are various mitigating factors. Существуют различные смягчающие факторы. Are
there any mitigating circumstances in this case? Имеются ли в данном случае смягчающие обстоятельства?
picturesque живописный- The building is grey, formidable, not at all picturesque. Здание серое, грозное, совсем не
живописное.

English.

2. Write F (formal), I (informal) or N (neutral) in the brackets at the end of each sentence. In each pair of
sentences, there is one neutral sentence and one formal or informal sentence. Underline the collocations that
are noticeably formal or informal.
